I have got 8 boxes for my family and they look pretty good. Worth to give it a go.
If you're boiling eggs you don't want them fresh or they're difficult to peel.

Yeah because de-beaking, overpopulation, de-feathering aren't cruel at all. Just cages. "Free range" chickens at 15,000 hens per hectare are happy as Larry :)
@magicmoose: Hey, according to these welfare advocates at least these hens don't have to share those hectares with their brothers who are all killed at a day. Plus they get to "leave" the moment their egg production wanes below what their younger sisters can do.

Surprisingly, you can tell a difference in the eggs that come from a sad cage chicken vs. a happy range-free one. If you want the ultimate in good eggs, get your own hens, then feed them fresh food and allow them to roam around your back yard. You'll be amazed at how much better eggs can be.
My friend got 8 chickens and he has full supply of eggs. I think 5-6 per day.
How much does each Hen cost and what are the upkeep cost on a weekly average??

I haven't bought hens for a long time, but check your local agricultural produce stockist. They'll likely either have some hens or know where you can get them, plus they can supply food and fencing as required. The last time I kept chickens I had 6, and at the time I costed out that they'd pay for themselves in a couple of months. Unless you have eggs every day you'll likely find that your supply starts to overtake the demand, at which point sell your excess eggs to your neighbours (say, for $2/half doz.) and that'll help lower the upkeep.
It's quite clear that most people don't actually care about animal welfare. They just want to feel better about themselves without actually doing anything.
I care about animal welfare, I never buy cage eggs and always use the CluckAR app and scan the carton label to check the stocking density of the eggs I buy.
@Scab: if you eat meat, eggs, or dairy, you don't care about animal welfare. You are directly responsible for animals being harmed and killed.

That's entirely different to what I posted and I never said a word about free range.
Those 10000 females don't need a male to lay eggs, a male being killed so they could be born is a different argument and again has nothing to do with what I said.

My local Coles has been discounting cage eggs last couple weeks, it was $2 and then down to $1.50 on the weekend.
On a whim I decided to build a chook coup with my 7yo son in the May school holidays.
We found a local egg farm that sell pullets for $18 each, we got 2. They are ISA browns, bred for laying. Within a few days they were both laying. We picked up a 3rd hen last school holidays and now have 3 eggs per day every day.
The 3 girls happily share our backyard with our 9yo German shepherd and they are great to have around and funny to just sit and watch. Great value animals to keep if you have a bit of grass for them to roam around on.
Good on you, chickens make great pets.
