If you're going to fly tiger these deals are great, as you will have someone with you to wait at the airport for 10hrs when they cancel the flight.

  • +1

What is the reliability of Tiger these days? I heard horrible stories of flights getting cancelled, passengers stranded etc. Has that improved?

    • Yes, they have increased their efficency of royaly screwing passangers over.
Stories of flights being cancelled and refunded last minute are all to common.
All of a sudden that $50 flight is going to cost you 10 times more.

Other than that they are exceptional.

    • I've had a few flights with them over the last couple of months, that have all worked out completely fine and almost on time. The only time I ran late was due to weather conditions that were affecting all flights.
All that said, their trends over time since May has been steadily decreasing performance in terms of ontime arrivals and number of cancellations.
I wonder if this is possibly due to recently expanding their network quite a bit.
I will happily fly them again if the price is right, but it's probably worth using some of that saved cash or using a decent credit card to get some domestic insurance just in case!

Cheers to @dazweeja for the link. If you click on the picture here you get a nice interactive graph that lets you see the trends over time for all Airlines (kudos to Rex BTW)

Well I have to say that I fly TIGER from Melbourne to the Gold Coast many times a year and have NEVER had a problem!!

  • +2

Flew with tiger the other day to sydney for $86 each return, such a pleasant experience. Got offered emergency seating both ways for each of us, so heaps of legroom for no extra cost, would definitely fly them again!

Flight got cancelled on me travelling home to Melb from Perth, forcing me to take the red eye/overnight flight (alternative would be to take the following day off work). My wife has had a few cancellations - we do travel with them about 4 times a year, I'd say about a 25% chance of having a cancellation and 50/50 on a ~1-2 hour delay.

    • Cool story, but why the neg? I fly Qantas, Virgin, Jetstar every few weeks to Sydney and have had flights cancelled more times than I care to remember, sometimes resulting in overnight stays. Every airline has cancellations. Never flown Tiger.

      • +1

Tiger is statistically the worst airline of the big four for all time performance metrics. 66.6% of arrivals on time is hellishly bad:

        https://bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_month.aspx

        • +4

Your link is only for the one month of September (48,062 flights), here is the link to data for the entire year (574,740 flights) ending June 2017:
          https://bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_annual.aspx

The cancellation % for Tigerair is actually pretty low. Cancellation %:

          Jetstar 1.8%
          Qantas 1.2%
          Tigerair 1.3%
          Virgin 2.2%
          All airlines 1.8%

So Tigerair cancellation rates are actually below average, which is quite impressive being a budget airline.

        • @lyl:

True but it's not a one-off, it's representative of their current state. They were also the worst airline of the big 4 for August, July and June too. Four months of terrible results is enough for me to say that they are the worst airline even if they weren't too bad not so long ago.

        • @lyl: But sheepdog said to expect 25% cancellation rate…. now I don't know what to believe.

      • +1

Sometimes people do not like others to express that they have had a different experience to their own.

IME Tiger tend to prefer to cancel a flight and offer a refund.
Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar will look to re accomodate.
Being left with a cancelled flight and a pending refund last minute can hit the wallet pretty hard.

      • -1

Eh, I negged in what I feel is a pretty meh product. I guess I'm a hypocrite though since I routinely fly with them because the value is still there, even though they've got an absolutely terrible customer experience and track record of keeping on time.

The thing about getting cancelled going to Sydney, especially with a nicer airline is that you'll probably only be out by a few hours since there are so many flights every day and the better airlines (Qantas and Virgin) will generally treat you better because of it. Going Melbourne to Perth via Tiger means that you'll only generally have 2 flights per day on weekends (3 on some weekdays), 1 being a red eye and the other being a reasonable flight. If the reasonable flight you booked is cancelled, you're stuck taking the red eye.

    • Sorry to hear about your bad luck. I've flown Tiger about 10 times, and the worst that's ever happened was our flight was cancelled and we were placed on a Qantus flight an hour later (which was great!) with all the trimmings. It's all anecdotal, but I think if they really had a 25% cancellation rate as a statistical average people would be up in arms.

      • if they really had a 25% cancellation rate as a statistical average people would be up in arms.

Tigers business model is to be the absolute cheapest.
The lure of a cheap flight will always fill seats.

        • +1

From the above link their cancellation rate was 3.3% https://bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_month.aspx

The arrival/departure on time are pretty bad, so my advice would be don't fly with Tiger if you are on a tight schedule. But if you're prepared to leave or arrive an hour late, go for it.

      • +1

So I'm really really doubtful that Tiger cancelled your flight and then flew you on Qantas an hour later, all included. During my last cancellation, my options were to take a flight the following day or the red eye. I asked politely (then asked for a supervisor) to be put on a Virgin flight that had capacity and was departing at the same time and was flatly declined. My options were to take the refund - which is pointless when you do an early bird booking as you'll get a 3rd back of what it costs to rebook - or to accept the flight change.

This wasn't isolated, this was simply the most recent incident (was last month) and like I said, given we fly with them about 4 times a year return (so 8 flights per year) and have for the last 5 years, we've had many cancellations and delays. The last time pissed me off so much because we were notified fairly last moment. When they notify weeks in advance, atleast we can make other arrangements.

        • I am very doubtful that Tiger would put anyone on a Qantas flight considering they are owned by Virgin. It seems that their current policy is to re-book passengers onto Virgin flights in case of cancellation. It used to be that they would put you on the next available Tiger flight, which was usually hours away (or the next day).

        • @djsweet: Any experience being put on a Virgin flight after a Tiger cancellation? I'd like to know for my next Tiger cancel. I legitimately expected that if I kicked up a stink/asked for a supervisor that they'd put me on the Virgin flight at the same time as opposed to the overnight flight but was repeatedly refused.

What did I do wrong, what are the magic words?

        • Mate, I have no reason to lie, I'm just relaying my experiences the same way you are yours.

This flight was on 30th July this year, from Melbourne to Brisbane. When I say "all included" I just mean the standard Qantas stuff (ie; entertainment and some food). It was pushed from 7:55 to 9am.

The notification was the night before the flight.

Edit: I could have had a brain fart with the Qantas thing, sorry guys, was likely Virgin.

        • @sheepdog: Yes I've been rebooked onto Virgin twice before when I had Tiger cancellations. I also know someone else who has. It seems this has only been the case for about 6-9 months. Previously they would only rebook onto Tiger.

        • @djsweet: Thats given me hope at least. My case was only last month, did you have to ask or did they do it straight away? My wife's most previous cancellation was maybe Jan, and probably March 2016 before that - never had any offer to reschedule on anything but Tiger.

        • @sheepdog: Maybe they have changed their policy again then. The last person I know who was rebooked to Virgin when their Tiger flight was cancelled was in mid Sept. I didn't have to ask anything in my case. I was automatically rebooked to Virgin.

        • @djsweet: Thanks for the response. Were you travelling alone? Do you know if the flight was oversold or proper cancelled?

        • @sheepdog: My flight that was rebooked (with Virgin, not Qantas like I originally thought!) was for 3 of us and happened automatically. No idea if the flight was actually cancelled or over booked.

        • @sheepdog: In my case I was travelling alone. In Sept my friend was travelling as a couple. Cancellations were due to either plane fault or weather.

        • @djsweet:(and to poimandres) Hah, now I'm actually a little more cross that we've never been offered a Virgin alternative.

I'd love to find difinitively what the policy is, whether it's based on the cost of the ticket originally purchased, the route or something else. But thanks for your input. I won't hold too much hope when it happens to me again but I'll keep it in mind that there is a precedent for getting put on another airline.

Tigerair cancellation % is actually quite low in June 2016 - June 2017 data, see comment above

      Tigerair 1.3%, Qantas 1.2%, Jetstar 1.8%, Virgin 2.2%, All Airlines 1.8%

    • +1

You get what you pay for.. a negative vote for poor personal experience is unwarranted!

every airline has this cancellation issue at some point in time!

      • +1

I voted on the reliability of their product. I don't mind an absolute bare bones flight experience at all. I do care about how reliably I'll get the product i paid for though.

I feel its a bit of a roll of the dice with tiger if I'll get the flight I paid for (considerably more so than other airlines), compounded by my experience on multiple occasions of not given a suitable alternative since they dont have many options to perth each day and I've never seen them offer a virgin flight as others have.

So, given I've got quite a lot of experience with the Tiger product and the likelihood of the flights from these sale deals turning out to be actual on time flights - coupled with the cost and inconvenience of having to reschedule at the last minute - I stand by my neg but appreciate if you would like to neg my comment. I think it's important everyone shares their experience of the products that go up on ozb.

        • I voted on the reliability of their product

For plenty of people who are short on money but plenty of time, Tiger is a choice. Perhaps you should look at other airlines.

my experience on multiple occasions of not given a suitable alternative since they dont have many options to perth each day and I've never seen them offer a virgin flight as others have

It is not common for airlines to fly others and I have never been offered once flying premier airlines (unless you are flying business class) or higher up the food chain > Platinum.

So, given I've got quite a lot of experience with the Tiger product

you still continue to fly Tiger after all these issues.. why because they are cheap (Bargain!)

I don't have a problem you telling your issues which highlights the quality of the product, but negative is not valid as per the voting guidelines

edit: looks like the negative has been revoked.. ;)

        • @skinny: As per the voting guidelines, the examples for negatively voting at the link you cited can be arguably referred to as reasons for my negative vote.

          Defective product
          Major issue with retailer
              Didn't receive previous purchase.
              Shipping time exceeding expected wait.

Its not a stretch to argue that if I purchase a flight for a specific time, on a specific date and there is a more than reasonable chance of it being not at that time, and in a few but not insignificant amount of cases to be not even on the same date, then I have a major issue with the retailer, and their product (timely flights) is to an extent defective.

I mean, you yourself pretty much eluded to the fact that Tiger was the airline you went with if you didn't care about getting to your destination on time (as have many others). However, Tiger don't advertise as "the airline that will get you there eventually but probably not on time", they advertise just like any other airline. So how do we educate others of the risks of flying with Tiger? By sharing our experiences in forums like this.

I'm totally okay with being in the minority here, it seems there are a lot of upvotes, and I wouldn't be suprised that my neg may have actually inspired others to positively post to counter it. I stand by my opinion on this one, that their deals aren't bargains, they're just a cheap product.

        • @sheepdog: thank you for keeping the conversation in a polite and gentle manner, something hard to find these days.

Your arguments are valid and is a common problem across all airlines not just Tiger (refer statistics above). if you read the fine print before you buy, you will clearly find that no airlines guarantee their timetable Link

Disclaimer: I don't work for any airlines and definitively not Tiger, but I fly a lot - not on Tiger ;)

  • Feeling a little ronery

  • Tried to price beat with Jetstar. Given their new system of price beating using a preset form and emailing you (no more live chat), they returned an offer in excess of the Tiger prices, which to me means they didn't use the 2FOR1 promo code. Unsure if they can't or just plain won't. No real way to ask them to use that code…

    • +1

Yeah their new system can be a real drag.
The Tiger deal can also vanish before they get around to processing your request.
That makes me very very angry.
