is the A119S V2 worth an extra $65?

    • nope…IMO

    • +1

Yes, but if you only drive during daylight this will get the job done.

    • Yes.

The b40 is no good in low lighting conditions. The a119s on the hand may still record reasonable images when the headlights are off.

  • How does it mount to the windscreen? Suction cup or adhesive?

    • +1

3m adhesive tape, had mine for 12 mths now and it hasn't fallen off much better than suction cup.

Also compared to a dash cam with a suction cup very discrete, I stuck it behind those black dots on the top part of the windscreen and all you can see from the front of the car is the lens.

    would recommend.. solid model

  • Can you have the screen off automatically when it starts up?

    • I have mine set to screen off after 30 secs, from memory I think you can choose 30s, 1 & 3min.

Btw these are not viofo a118c dashcams, but rather b40c replicas or clones.

  • Good price, even for the generic versions. Cheers OP.

    • same as this
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/325956

they may look the same, but they aren't. we have a genuine viofo a118c and a clone a118c/b40. they look the same at first glance, but closer inspection shows differences like air vents, lens, colour/gloss of the casing, lack of s/n on the clone, internal components visible thought the air vents, the retail box, the accessories included, etc.

      • Do you find the performance of the genuine and clone to be the same?

this is the one that's doing the rounds on ebay, aliexpress and possible gb.

        • @whooah1979: Pretty sure that the fake B40's haven't got the Novatek 96650 chipset or the button battery to save files on shutdown, so the fake ones don't save the last file and are missing the Novatek branding on the chipset.

I got 2 of the Viofo 118C from GB and both were geniune as I took them apart to check so I doubt they would be selling fakes of the B40. I suppose you can open them up which is easy and check but if it is not saving the last file you pretty much know you have a fake.

        • @adr8:

I doubt GB would be selling fakes but you would never know unless you open them up.

We purchased our a118c/ b40c from eBay. The same one in the first YouTube vid. It came in the same box plus accessories. The splash logo was a welcome and not the standard viofo.

gb listing of the a118c makes no reference to this being a viofo, neither in images nor the description.

        • @whooah1979: I am not saying the one I posted is the Viofo model, GB use to sell the Viofo version aswell as this B40, there was a few dollars difference between the 2.

What I am saying is that there is genuine B40's and fake B40's as pointed out in the video and Dashcamtalk have listed GB as selling the geniune versions from what I remember.

        • @whooah1979:I found the review from dashcamtalk as I didn't have time to post it earlier, if you scroll down the bottom it mentions Gearbest sell both genuine versions, the Viofo and unbranded.

If you search the forums you can find more discussion on the topic the fake ones with blurry vision don't have the Novatek 96650 chipset.
Note FYI even some fake Viofo cams have the Viofo splash screen so it isn't an indication it is genuine anymore.

        • @adr8: Is your Viofo a118c your currently used dash cam? Would you recommend this one, or spending more on another dash cam ?

        • @shrugies: Both my front and rear cams are A118C's and haven't skipped a beat for well over 12 mths now.

Daytime footage is excellent, nightime footage not so good, personally if had to buy again at this moment I would still choose the A118C over the considerably pricier A119S, but I'm sure others would disagree.

Probably best to ask someone who has owned both cameras and can vouch if the A119S superior nightime footage is worth the extra cost. From what I have read the majority say it is, while a few say otherwise.

        • @adr8: Thank you! Have you ever pulled up the video to have a look at the footage? If so, how clearly did the dash cam show the licence plates of other cars?

        • @shrugies: Yes daytime footage you can clearly see plates, not at nighttime unless the car is right in front.

        • @adr8: Awesome, thanks for that!
