  • Just a small issue with this camera. Sometimes it doesn't detect the card. Unplugging and plugging back in usually fixes the issue.

    Night recording is crappy.

    • Mines fine, make sure u format in camera not pc

  • +1

    Thnx got 2
    Paid in USD with 28degrees = AUD$39.23ea.

  • This unit looks almost identical to the Street Guardian which sells for $250:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Street-Guardian-SG9665GC-V3-DVR-R…

What's the difference? According to the specs, the chipset is even the same??

    • +4

The street guardian is far superior especially for night time.
The A118C is pretty bad at low light but decent daytime and a good budget unit.

      • Street guardian is much better but for the price can't complain. Works great

  • +1

Thank you got one around A$41 paid by paypal.

    • +15

In future pay in $US on both the site and Paypal (change currency at payment screen) it means your bank will do the conversion instead of Paypal using weak rates; it will work out cheaper ~AU $39.38.

(Select "View currency conversion options" under the exchange rate. Then select "Convert with card provider".)

      • +3

Oh I did not know that.
Thanks very much to let me know.

        • +1

but your bank may have international transaction fee (usually 3%) on top of mastercard rate.

        • @vhfyagi:

Most banks are now charging this for all transactions that take place overseas even if you pay in AUD.

        • @dazweeja: that's right unless using 28 degree mastercard, then no international transaction fee.

        • @vhfyagi:

Yes, every serious OzBargainer should have a card like that that doesn't charge international transaction fees. Bankwest Zero Platinum is another good one (with complimentary travel insurance).

      • +1

Are you sure this item from Viofo? from deal page,it should be one generic a118c.

        • +1

          yes, I noted this too.
I have both a 118 bought on ebay a couple years back and more recently a 118c unit from Gearbest that's identical to this one.
Unless it is clearly stated & branded Viofo, it's a cheaper whoflungdung copy.

        • @rayski57: Shonky ways of sellers keeping the model no. and selling generic ones…
Reminds me of ebay listings in the past with model no. alone for headsets mimicking LG, Samsung or Sony, etc .

Edit: It is mentioned in the OP that Rep is saying they cannot specify it to be VIOFO….. Surprisingly they have it for other models.

        • @Gaggy: I imagine the only reason they wouldn't use the brand name is if it's either made by Viofo and unbranded (but why would they at this price?) or that it's is a cheap whoflungdung copy.
another thought, If it's actually a Viofo and they're clearing out their 118C's as they've moved on, then it would be a bargain and I'd buy them as rear window cams.
EDIT out of stock so all academic now anyway

    this or the G1W-C?

    • this

        • +1

this is smaller and more discreet. I have the G1W-CB in black actually, buying this for my parents car because they want one.

        • @scrimshaw:

          any other reason?

        • +1

Had my G1W-C for 3 years now and haven't needed to take it out once, very reliable indeed.

        • +1

@dfk367:I have had two G1W-C cameras for about two years and they've worked a treat.

  • wow thats cheap. no reason not to have a dash cam now

    • +3

No reason insurance companies should be giving them out for free as part of your policy. I have 2 already (1 front and back) and they are worth it. Already saved my ass, when some bitch merged into me and claimed I was at fault. Myself or my insurance never released details that their was footage. Last I heard the police interview her in regards to her insurance claim, and I didn't pay my excess.

Would love to see every Australian car having one, or even better all new cars should have a black box built in that records data. No reason they cant charge $100 more for a car and have an inbuilt system.

  • +1

So cheap! I have two of these, no issues whatsoever. Great entry level dashcam

    • +1

Hi, I already have one of this. You have 2, do you use it for back and front? Can I actually do that?

      • Nah two cars… not sure if you can do front and back

  • +1

Night recording is rubbish, and the camera loses focus when it's hot. The A118C has a plastic lens housing which allegedly flexes when hot according to the internet. Save your money and get something that'll actually be useful in an accident or for uploading to DCOA.

    • More than sufficient in the case of an accident.

      • +1

I had one for two weeks before returning it. The footage is terribad at best, and downright unusable at night, during summer (loses focus), or at night and it's raining. Save your money.

        • then A119S V2 would be better choice, better but more expensive

        • @MiniInTheBox: I have an A119 running in my car and I'm happy with the night quality - not the best, but still good enough to identify details. Day footage is pretty good.

        • And I've had it for multiple years now, as well as a few Thinkwares. So two weeks ain't nothing you can comment on.

        • @gmail92: what parts of my comment are not to your liking? Everything I've said is factual.

        • @niggard:

It is a great cam, and is excellent value at the price point. Furthermore, it is definitely usable in an accident.
          Prove me wrong.

        • @gmail92: great is subjective. I don't consider a potato cam at night particularly great. It would be excellent value if it was usable, but when it's only usable during the day it's not excellent value.

You haven't given any info on the day/night footage quality nor the build quality. What I have said is factual, whereas everything you've said is subjective.

        • @niggard:

          usable
          adjective
able or fit to be used.

So you're saying recording doesn't work at night at all? Or if I have an incident at night I can't see anything?
Or are you saying it's not a camera?

The day quality is great, and the night quality is passable. If I had an incident at night, it would hold up in an insurance claim. Is that not factual enough for it to be "usable"?

That's alright. I don't expect a BA to understand anyways.

        • +7

@gmail92: why would you buy something that barely records? Your insurance excess is worth more than the cost of running a shitty dash cam. Sure, it's better than nothing but if you had to spend money you should buy something better. All of these videos were taken earlier this year. I don't deem any of it acceptable quality. If you think the night footage would help you in an insurance claim, then may god have mercy on you. I don't suppose you value your car or your insurance excess at more than the cost of your dash cam.

        • @niggard:

WTH happened with that first vid? Daylight is not too bad. The fisheye effect is a bit meh though.

        • +1

@CVonC: I don't remember, but it was bad enough to warrant calling the other driver a f^cking idiot. I'm pretty sure he turned onto the wrong side of the road and only corrected when he saw me coming. You can't see shit in that video, therefore the dash cam is useless. I had to go through my calendar and re-watch that video a few times to work out the footage was recorded on Garland Rd, Naremburn - the only hint I had was the car in the driveway when I parked at the very end.

Edit: the other car turned onto the wrong side of the road and forced me to give way to him, even though he was the one that barrelled through (Garland Rd is quite narrow), all locals know you can't really turn until passing cars have gone because someone has to give way. The footage is so bad I can't work out whether the car came out of King St or Central St.

As for day footage, the quality went bad the moment the temperature went up. The stuff I read on the internet put it down to the plastic lens housing flexing in the heat, thus causing distortion and lack of sharpness. The last video was of a black E class merc pulling out without indicating in front of the car in front of me, but you can't see shit in the video because the dash cam is crap.

        • @niggard:

lol I was actually talking about the video quality as yeah I couldn't see shit ><

I can see exactly what happened in the daylight vid. Was the long beep from the suddenly braking yaris?

        • @CVonC: yeah the Yaris honked at the Merc. What good is a dash cam if it can't even identify the black car as a W211 E class sedan?

        • @niggard:

lol well even if the clarity was super sharp, I'm not enough of a rev head to know that that was what it was ^^ Just knew it was indeed a benz of some sort. That was Belmore Rd, Randwick right?

        • @CVonC: yeah

        • +1

@niggard: thanks for sharing these, really appreciated

        • @DerpFactory: no worries. I hope they will help inform potential buyers as to what limitations this dash cam has.

        • @niggard: Oh god, that first video's effect is always music video worthy, submit your content to a local music group in the trance/psychedelic genre :D

    • +1

The a118c is by far the best dashcam for under $40, and the a119s for under $100.

      • The A118C shouldn't even be considered as a worthy purchase, it's rubbish

        • The A118C shouldn't even be considered as a worthy purchase, it's rubbish

you may have purchased a rubbish a118c, but we certainly didn't. we've used the same a118c over the past two years. that's more than 500 hours of vids over two hot sydney summers.

the a118c is now mounted in the rear while an a119s has replaced its spot in the front.

      Night recording is rubbish,

motorists in nsw are 11 times more likly to be involved in a collision between 15:00 and 18:00 compared to 23:00. the number of crashes rises to 27 times when we compare 15:00-18:00 to 01:00.

a dashcam with good night time recording is more a bragging right, than a must have feature.

      • +1

Statistically more crashes occur during peak hour when the largest number of people are on the road… who would have thought!

You've also included 6pm in your argument on the "daytime" side, ignoring the fact that it's night for at least half the year. The sun sets around 5:20 where I am.

What is your actual argument? Are you trying to convince people to save a small amount of money and buy a product that's useless 50% of each day?

    • Appreciated your comments and youtube footage. But just wondering are you sure your A118C is made by Viofo not the generic (unbranded clone) one? I have seen a lot of reviews on Viofo A118C, it's not that bad at such budget price. Personally I got Viofo A119S V2 but I am seriously thinking Viofo A118C may not be a bad option for the rear mounting dashcam.

      • Mine was indeed a Viofo one. Based on all the positive stuff I've read here, I could've very well gotten a dud unit. Why not get a A119 as a rear dash cam? It only costs a little more.

        • Got 2 cars and each installed A119S V2 in front. Just thought a cheap and budget rear dashcam could be handy.

        • The Viofo version shipped with firmware number A118C.xxxx (e.g. A118C.20160316 as typical example), the unbranded version shipped with firmware number like B40C.xxxxxxxx.001. If you flash the unbranded unit with Viofo published firmware, the dashcam may start have issues. That will tell you whether you have a non-viofo unit. A lot of people have bought unbranded version from Gearbest and Amazon and the video quality is very poor.

        • @vhfyagi: I returned my dash cam, bought a Viofo A119 and haven't looked back. I made sure to pay more for a Viofo A118C but it didn't help - I suppose I got a dud because I think everyone else would be complaining too if they got the same quality footage I did.

        • +1

@niggard: I would return it too if the quality is so bad like that. But to be fair, non-viofo A118C/B40C does exist and a lot of ppl are caught up on Gearbest and Amazon. I am not aware of that at the beginning until I read through "dashcamtalk" forum.

  • can anyone recommend a dashcam model that has front and rear camera, and also can record when the car is parked overnight. up to $800.

    • +1

You are better off with 2 dashcams rather than 1 with 2 cameras.
Far cheaper, no cable running front to back, and some redundancy in case of a problem.

The A119 models offer a hard wire kit and parking mode (adjustable frame rate as low as 1fps) with latest firmware (v3.3) for around AU$80 - $120 delivered (China/AU stock)

    • +1

Up to $800 budget you have so many options for the premium dashcam, I would look for Blackvue DR650S-2CH or Thinkware F770 or Vicovation opia2.

  • +2

Crap, shit for night vision, buggy, needs constant re-boot, therefore you can never rely on it. save up the $$$ and buy something ONCE and DECENT.

    • my suggest is A119S,Video quality during the day is very good and night quality is good.
      review here:https://dashcamtalk.com/viofo-a119s/

  • These are the best bang for buck car cams! well worth the $$$

  • Can anyone confirm this is the Viofo version?

    • hi mate, just confirmed with supplier, it's Viofo version

      • Are you 100% sure it's the VIOFO version? On the website there is another more expensive a118c dashcam listing for $63.99 usd, and it has VIOFO in the description, whereas this one does not.
        http://www.lightinthebox.com/viofo-a118c-nt96550-car-camera-…

        • hmm that's interesting. are there VIOFO knock offs or something?

        • 100% sure, just becaurse some manufacturer reason we can't mention that on our product page, or the price will be changed

        • @MiniInTheBox:

          He is not true.
          I recived NOT Viofo version!
No model number and make on the box. Just say Car Black Box

        • @koakun: hi mate, do you mind give me the box picture and order number? so i can check it.

        • @MiniInTheBox:

Mine is a knock-off too. Firmware says B40CS.

        • @koakun: got mine and same not Viofo brand. I think mine is even faulty. Many dead pixels on the recorded video… see white dots all over the place.

        • @duketing: For everyone that got a knock off version, I would consider returning it.
There is a reason knock offs are made. They use cheaper internals and try to pass it off as the real thing to make their profit.

          I have a genuine A118C and it's been faultless.

        • @unco: for those who don't know the difference besides the firmware but also the lens are more protruding and rounder. The video image are brighter so you can see better under undercover parking and lic plate are not blurred when light shines on it.

      • not true.
        I received NOT Viofo version!
No model number and make on the box. Just say Car Black Box

    • +1

      I received NOT Viofo version!
No model number and make on the box. Just say Car Black Box

      • A118C box is generic (check youtube unboxing video). To quick check whether you got Viofo version, you need to check the firmware number. If you see A118C.xxxxxxxx, then you got Viofo version. If you see B40C.xxxxxxx.001, you got a knock off copy. A118C2 will have official Viofo box, like A119 and A119S.

        • +1

Mine from this deal is B40CS. So knock-off copy.

        • +1

@dazweeja: Yeah, knock off copy. The Rep already admitted that. If you are not happy, just ask refund.

        • @vhfyagi:

Sorry, that info had been pushed onto the second page of comments so I hadn't seen it (and the post title still says 'Viofo'). I'm not too fussed. Seems identical to Viofo aside from the firmware?

Edit: Just read one of your other comments. Seems video quality might be substandard. Returning.

        • +1

@dazweeja: The reason why knock off copy is cheaper than Viofo version is they use cheaper components although the outside look is almost identical. The cheaper components here may not necessarily be the image processor, lens, etc. But they could be motherboard, capacitor, etc. So although the knock off copy can claim they have same specifications as Viofo version, the actual performance may differ. Don't put me wrong here, there are knock off copies which are performing as good as Viofo, but in a lot of cases, the knock off copies are performing worse. You need to test the dashcam you got for both day and night footage and compare with the review footage (Viofo version) from Youtube. If the video quality is poor, you probably want to ask for refund as there is a legitimate reason (LITB's mistake) for you to do so. If you are happy with the video quality, well then keep it and enjoy (plus you can have USD5 for compensation at least)!

        • @vhfyagi:

Thanks mate. Really appreciate the response. I'll do some recording over the weekend.

  • How does the video quality compare to something like https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/300961 that?

  • The main thing with these: how to the cope with the hot Aussie sun?
Excellent at destroying most cheap plastics

  • This or A119S? Is it worth the extra $ to upgrade to the A119S?

    • A119S is better if you have enough budget

  • Been waiting for a long time for this to go on sale, thanks just got one.

  • +1

I bought one over a year ago from gearbest in a deal here. So far so good, haven't had any problem.

For who need more info, YouTube is full of reviews. This was considered the best budget dashcam in the market.

By the way, that's a very good price!!!

  • Bought for the parents. Definitely better than having no dash cam at all!
