edit: Looks like its been a heavy seller. Stock is now super limited. To demonstrate, for me in melbourne the closest place with stock is Moe, which is 5 hours away. You're better off going to officeworks and trying to get a pricematch, though you should note that officeworks only have the gold while this deal is for gray, and its by special order only so no store pickups

  • This or Xiaomi Mi A1?

    • +8

      this

    • +3

Mi A1 does not have NFC and it wont have local warranty. So if either of those things is extremely important for you then G5 plus is a no-brainer. If you want fast software updates then Mi A1 is the obvious choice.

Edit: No compass on Moto G5 Plus if navigation is crucial

      • +6

A compass is not required for navigation unless you plan to use it with paper maps in which case go buy a real compass.

      • No compass on any Moto G after the Moto G 2013 1st gen.
You can install a Compass app…
but when you start it there is a notice, 'your device doesn't have a magnetic sensor'
(still a nice phone and I may get one)

        • Load up a GPS app, (eg. GPS Logger), and then walk a few meters, I've found it takes less than 4-5 meters before I get a heading.

Same system as my old dedicated GPS units.

Conversely, my old RN2 had a compass and was confused about which way it was pointing half the time when in the car, even after calibration.

    • +7

This: NFC, Band 28, local warranty
Xiaomi Mi A1: No NFC, No band 28, but I think better specs. "Pure Android" experience (not that the Motorola OS is that bloated though, so I've heard)

      Not sure about camera

      • +4

        Not sure about camera

Take a look at this photo I took today

It doesn't prove anything about the camera, but I thought it was pretty weird

        • Which phone is it, Mi A1 or G5 Plus?

        • well that's unusual

        • +4

          @jtrvk:

Which phone is it, Mi A1 or G5 Plus?

No phone, I just stuck my tongue in the usb port of my laptop and concentrated real hard. What do you think of my work?

        • +3

@outlander: If it had a tiny little human head and arm then it would be unusual.

        • +3

Apparently it most likely has not finished 'sclerotizing'.

        • +1

          @jtrvk:
          g5+ - can't you read exif tags ? :-)

          Nice camera.

        • +1

          @manic:

bloody exif data.. I forget that exists
heres the photo again for any curious george or georginas

        • @manic:

I can but I would have to download the image just to check its EXIF data.

        • @outlander:

Apologies, missed that you are the OP. Anyway, I am sure your tongue must have seen some better days :D

        • +1

@outlander: Reminds me of the original The Fly film.

BTW, managed to rack up $50 Myer, $20 Rebel, and $5 Coles gift cards.

        • @outlander:
Don't worry, I don't think there were any GPS tags left.

      • i had a moto, the os is clean with minimal bloat, a few moto utilities for transferring to new phone etc which can be easily deleted. upgrades to new versions of android was also good in supporting old phones but slow for release dates on phones older then 2 years.

now have an lg v20….. i’d buy moto next time and go with a simpler os experience.

xiaomi …. need to be specific in support if you talk about the Skin or the actual os eg android version.

        • How do you think of lg v20 compare to moto gt plus? I am about to get v20, currently using moto G4 plus, nothing wrong with photo, but just want try something else.

        • the V20 is a nicer phone compares to the G4 plus in regards to screen, quality manufacture, etc but it also costs more.

I got the V20 on an eBay 20% off and it came to $360 so was cheap.

If I was going moto, it the G5s plus or the Z play, but killer price can also be an influencer, so the V20 at $360 kills the G5s Plus at $400 for value , but who knows what g4s plus deals are around the corner….. and no V20 deals at 20% off at the moment.

only downside to v20 was the fingerprint reader ….. its on the back, moto is on the front, and i keep my phones in cases so with the v20 was tricky unlocking due to thickness of leather case, no issues with moto as reader is on the front.

        • The Mi A1 is an Android One device, it has stock Android (Android One is the low end replacement to the Nexus project. Pixel is the flagship, Android One is the budget Google Experience device)

      • Moto's software is very close to stock android.

  • When this was in stock I purchased this with officeworks price match
    https://www.mobileciti.com.au/motorola-g5-plus-16gb-gold
    Was a really good price.

    • Officeworks will give a price match on mobileciti?

      • +1

Yes they will and they did for me a month ago (maybe because Mobileciti is local and had free shipping), but Mobileciti is out of stock now, as is every Officeworks I have looked at in Sydney.

    • Office works wouldn't price match for my order. They said mobilciti had a return stocking fee and it was different to office works.

  • +1

Got one for my wife. Great phone. If my oneplus 3 goes bad, I'd be happy to replace with this. We got a grey import 32GB/3GB euro market one from eglobal for $275.

    • How does it compare to the OnePlus for no lag/stutter?

      • No stutter that I've noticed. NFC works well. Fingerprint reader probably better. Fingerprint reader supports gestures for Back and Task Switcher too. Battery life way better but I probably use my oneplus a lot more and have an android wear watch linked.

    • I thought the eGlobal and Shopmonk ones were advertised as 4GB?

      • +1

Eglobal are selling 3gb ram RETEU Europe model. From another poster it appears that Shopmonk are selling 4gb RETIND Indian model.

        • +1

Cheers. I keep hearing inconsistent information where people receive above or below the RAM values advertised (e.g. on the Shopmonk thread one guy ordered a 3GB model from eBay and received 4GB).

I wish device-specific mobile specifications sheets were standardised and readily available to the sellers from manufacturers (if they aren't already). It's so frustrating reading through a copy-pasted advertisement that says things like US model only without telling you the country model, and even when you receive some of the specs in the description they make it confusing by appending the generic spec sheet in the same body with phrases like "dual-SIM model only", "3GB/4GB", "32GB/64GB".

To make matters more confusing, every country can sell its own non-optional variations yet some country-specific Motorola.com pages are very sparse on information compared to Australia (e.g. India's). My understanding is that the US model was the only one not to receive NFC but did receive a magnetic compass.

  • +3

    ughhhhh only 16GB …

    • That's why moto released G5S 32GB as minimum 6 months later…

      • +1

The big advantage of Moto G5 Plus over G5S Plus is that older model has a separate slot for MicroSD card whereas on G5S MicroSD card slot is shared with second SIM slot, which means if you are buying it for dual SIM functionality, you cannot expand the storage.

        • Yep, Moto Z Play is another which allows dual sim + microSD.

        • I only have one sim so the dual-sim is a value added. 32GB is a good trade off between storage and sim.

    • +3

      With SD card slot though.

      • soon or later you will find 16GB is full (of cache/junk) and you have to clean the phone even though you have put photos and videos on sd card.

  • +3

just FYI, MobileCity has Moto Z play at %377 with the $50 discount code "November50", with cashreward 3% cashback it is set at $365.69

    comparing to the G5 Plus:

    $70 ish more expensive
    Same SoC (SD 625)
3GB RAM (1 GB less ram, why moto why)
5.5 inch AMOLED display (comparing to 5.2 ISP display), same resolution. I personally like AMOLED more.
    3500mah battery (500 more)
    better overall build quality.
    Moto Mod
16m camera vs 13m (guess not a big deal?)

I just ordered the Moto Z play, my wife had one and can't love it more.

    • If I had known of this a week ago I would have bought the Z PLay.

      • what a shame.

i only got to know that today tks to a dear OZBargainer.

i personally think the extra money is well worth it.

    • Do Motorola Amoleds have an always-on display? (time & notifications).

      • It will use approximity sensor to display time and notification, I guess that is the always on display? No?

        • If its like my moto-X LCD, it uses infra-red sensors so you can wake the display by waving, better than the standard phone proximity sensors, but not as good as always-on.

        • @manic:

Ah maybe I was wrong and the moto z play also use a infra red sensor to detect human motion?

But it's the same thing, u can wave it hand to "wake up" the time and notification, I guess it is Not "always on".

      • No, but if you pick it up it shows the time in half a second

    • The Australian G5Plus has only 3GB RAM too. And is only available with 16GB storage. I found that frustrating - even with the newer 'S' model in Australia you can only get 32GB version directly from the Motorola store. The 32GB models have 4GB RAM.

      • In that case the z play is definitely much better imo

    • the november50 code doesnt work in checkout and also how do i do the cashback and if i buy it today can i pick it up today?

  • +1

The jbhifi one has 3gb ram not 4gb

  • +11

And for few people with one of the popular questions, this Moto G5 plus doesn't have a notification light.

    • Motorola phones pulse the screen instead of an LED. It's called ambient display or something like that.

Here's an example of how it looks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MMi2VaGoq0

      • +1

There is a video which shows how to bring ambient display back but didnt work for me unfortunately. Also, battery percentage cannot be displayed, so have being using a app called Battery Bar

        • +1

I think the notification-pulsing feature is enabled and disabled in the "Moto" app under the "Display" section? I'll check tomorrow.

Stock Android, which Motorola is close to, hides the battery-percentage feature in the System UI Tuner. (No idea why such a useful feature is hidden.)

          Try this: https://www.howtogeek.com/239556/how-to-show-your-android-ph…

  • this or xiaomi a1???

  • Bought one from this deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/328865

No regrets. Amazing price. So far so good.

  • +1

    this or iPhone X?

    • +6

I think you should go for iphone X. Its not my money to waste so why not.

      • +3

Yep, definitely the X, someone has to fund the R&D on the expensive phones so we can get the good value on phones like this.

  • I'm still using an 18 month old (unbootlooped) LG G4 that's getting laggy AF as well as ailing battery life. I look at this in a side buy side comparison but it doesn't seem to be any sort of upgrade..aside from the bonus of dual SIM.
    Can somebody convince me otherwise?

    • for me the driver for a new phone is usually i want the newer os and that needs an upgrade or battery is ailing. etc.

otherwise once you have the basics eg 1080p screen , band 28, enough rom etc they all seem to do the same things and work.

lag as phones get older, i’ve never noticed but a factory rest and load important stuff again might work.
heck you rebuild a pc every few years as you remove apps they seem to leave something behind when you delete,

    • It's a mid-range phone; the camera on the LG G4 is better. I had a G4 which boot looped before going to the Moto G4 Plus and now the Moto Z.

If you want a Moto which is comparable to your G4 look at the Moto Z (SD820)

  • +1

I have this phone - I paid about $300 for the 32Gb, NFC version. I like it. It has a decent camera, is well built and the dual sim capability is great when travelling overseas.

    Recommended.

I don't think I'd get the 16Gb version though - my experience of 16Gb and under phones is constantly having to uninstall apps and clearing cache.

    • Love Moto….Agree with last sentence completely.

    • Question about the dual sim, is it acting as 4G/3G dual sim? No point for me getting it when dualsim is 2G.

      • 2nd sim is 3g/4g

  • Just looking at the specs, the physical size of the thing is a bit offputting. It's a smidge wider than the Note 8 yet a standard 5.2" screen.

Or more on point, the Q6 fits a much bigger screen in a much smaller device with the sole downside being the 435 instead of the 625. Assuming one just wants an average maps/google/occasional call device, any reason to not go the Q6?

    • +1

Yeah, the G5 Plus is a big phone. And as a mid-range phone, there are going to be compromises somewhere.

I don't know much about the LG Q6, but it's about $50 more to buy at JB HiFi. No doubt it's cheaper elsewhere.

This side-by-side comparison suggests that the G5 Plus is faster, takes better photos, and has better battery performance among other things. The Q6 also doesn't have a fingerprint reader. So arguably, with the Q6 you'd be paying more for lesser features - features that many people rate as important these days.

But for your criteria, "maps/google/occasional call," either phone would be a good choice.

Gutted I missed out on this last month for $240 on the Good Guys 20% Ebay sale

  • Anyone have an opinion on if the camera is good/average for the price? Thanks much

  • The DWI grey import is a better deal for the 32GB and 4GB RAM version. $299.
    https://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/motorola-moto-g5-plus-x…
Also $5 cheaper for the Gold version if you are into that.

    • It's 3GB

      • I have the 4gb ram version at $279 two months ago.

The screen color is not so good, sometimes looks like faded out.

      • Well spotted, I thought the 16GB was 3GB RAM and the 32GB was 4GB.

I think it is only the 64GB that has 4GB of RAM.

i was hoping for a nice cheap upgrade from the Moto G4 Plus which is already 32GB and 4GB RAM and I really need the working dual SIM and SD Card and not or SD card that is in the G5s Plus.

        • +2

The Asia Pacific version of the G5 Plus comes in 2 versions: 3GB/16GB or 4GB/32GB

The one DWI flog is the EU version: 3GB/32GB

Both are model XT1685 but you need to look at the Software Channel: retapac for Retail Asia Pacific

See here and previous in that thread for a discussion about what people received and thought they ordered from DWI.

        • @4wd:

          Thanks excellent info.

Will buy from qd_au $30 for the extra 1GB RAM and better warranty support than DWI.

          Cheers

        • @blairz1: You're welcome :)

Having just been OS for 4.5 months using my old Redmi Note 2, there's no way I'd consider a phone that wasn't Dual SIM plus uSD slot now.

Anything less than 128GB internal storage I find is not enough and the Dual SIM was great travelling around UA and the UK.

        • @4wd:

That's exactly right, the dual SIM and SD on my Moto G4 plus is constantly running an AU SIM and Phillipine SIM and works perfectly with switching data across when I land for work. Incoming calls and messages to the AU number are perfect and the switching across when back home is easy.

Plus the SD card extra for music makes the whole set-up perfect.

I hope the Moto G5s Plus is not a sign they have stopped dual SIM and SD and they don't stick with dual SIM or SD.

  • My gripe with its predecessor the G4 plus, is that the camera scratches up real easy leaving blurry photos after a while, I've only had it for a year :(

    • You need to take better care of your phone, the camera glass is just glass. My G4 was like new after 6 months when I sold it to a colleague.

    • +1

i bought five g5 plus camera glass protector film for $5 at ebay

      • Good idea in hindsight, the screen glass is top notch, zero scratches, camera glass not so much, like plastic.

Wonder if I can get fixed?

  • -1

no usb c crappy stone age non reversible socket else top notch

    • Could always go for a reversible cable:
      https://www.blitzwolf.com/BlitzWolf-2.1A-Reversible-Braided-…

      I have one of these.

      • new to me, have 2 HTS's with broken charge sockets, a Samsung Galaxy S6 that had the issue a week out of warranty and deceiving Telstra putting me to hell refusing warranty because I was not the original purchaser. After spending around 20 grands with them a very poor performance. Been charging the S6 on a number of wireless pads but this made the battery bulge and crack the glass above the display and Telstra blames me for dropping the phone but it has never been dropped.

When Apple went to the small plug I was wrong to think that it would hurt future sales but the sheer fact that it can be plugged it both ways typically suits its user who buy the phone just to show off.

Now I work with cheap androids where I can swap the battery. In the summer heat I keep getting the message of battery becoming too hot so a quick swap is like an instant fix.

  • Best thing about Moto these days is the updates; my Moto Z has been receiving monthly security updates for the past 6 months now.

    Well done to Lenovo!

  • -1

Huge phone compared to its screen size:
    Dimensions:150.2 x 74 x 7.7 mm
    5.2 inches, 74.5 cm2 (~67.1% screen-to-body ratio)

Just for comparison with the Galaxy S8:
    Dimensions:148.9 x 68.1 x 8 mm
    5.8 inches, 84.8 cm2 (~83.6% screen-to-body ratio)

    • +1

      also a huge price difference.

    • +1

      Midrange vs flagship, well done!

      • +3

Do you understand i wasn't comparing the 2 phones in terms of specifications? I could have found a 2013 phone with better screen/body ratio than this.
I know some people tend not to buy phablet as they are not pocket friendly, I was just making them aware.

        • +1

yep, my broken lg g5 was better than this moto, it feels huge but without a big screen and heavy

        • +1

It's a fair point. I for one didn't know that, but regardless I'm quite happy with the phone, and I haven't found the size to be an issue. Add to that, moto throws in a few interesting features to make it easier to use. Things like making a twisting motion to open camera, or the ability to reduce the screen size so you can use it one handed, have really come in handy. Size and weight wise it reminds me of my old nexus 4

  • But it's $249 from OfficeWorks.

    • That's the regular G5. This is the G5 Plus.
