  • great deal thanks!

I really dont like you need such high ID for credit card transactions.

    • care to explain?

      • +2

Yep, there were 3 steps, one was provide a copy of a bill, then send them through written verification to debit your credit card and there was a 3rd step, i just changed my order to bank deposit in the end.

        • Woah! That's bloody too much!

Either they wanted to discourage people from using CC, or their CC online validation is crap!

        • Either they wanted to discourage people from using CC, or their CC online validation is crap!

It is the only way to know for sure that you own the credit card you are using.

Anyone can get a stolen credit card but a stolen credit card and other information is harder.

But I agree that it is a hassle

        • Wow, if they're forcing you to give up all this personal information just to discourage people from paying by credit card, then they're probably in breach of the Privacy Act.

        • They're not forcing anyone. You have a choice between CC, bank transfer and cheque/money order.

Businesses have a right to protect themselves. But I agree, this is going too far for a measly $20 purchase.

        • Wow, if they’re forcing you to give up all this personal information just to discourage people from paying by credit card, then they’re probably in breach of the

You probably have not bothered to read the Privacy Act then

          http://www.privacy.gov.au/materials/types/infosheets/view/65…

        • I was happy to fill out the CC details, but all the 3 steps … stuff it
I hope they didn't keep my CC number ….

        • You probably have not bothered to read the Privacy Act then

Erm, I take it you read NPP 1.1? ("An organisation must not collect personal information unless the information is necessary.")

If they need to see your utilities bill to accept your credit card, that's spells out a breach to me.

Thing is, CentreCom probably doesn't have to comply with the Privacy Act unless they have 200+ employees.

        • Erm, I take it you read NPP 1.1?

          I did.

I think that asking for a copy of a bill is necessary if they want to protect them self from a transaction where they do not see the credit card.

  • Strontium brand from Singapore. Anyone got any opinions on these? I've never heard of them before and Google didn't provide much in the way of reviews.

And why do people keep putting computer stuff in 'Apparel'?

    • apparel is the default; people forget or skip changing the category. I might mention it to Scotty

    • +1

Strontium brand is fine. I have only ever use a few sticks of Strontium desktop ram in my PCs and never had any problem with them. It comes in the same value class as Kingston Value ram and lifetime warranty. Never tried there USB devices, but guessing they would be good value for money at this price.

Reported in this review Strontium 16gb USB working well with USB HD PVR. Same brand/model I am planning to use my 16gb stick on.

  • How much is shipping for a USB stick on the site normally?

    • Looks like a flat rate of $18.

      • $18 standard courier or $9.99 if you choose Aust post satchel.

    • +1

Shipping is mentioned FREE on the title of the post!

      • -4

And the word NORMALLY is included at the end of his post!

        Lern 2 rede.

        • +4

Simple misunderstanding… no need to be rude.

        • Hi Camelgrass Nice nickname :-)

  • That's quality right there… not…

  • -3

No-name brand, shipping costs almost as much as the product itself, similar 16GB USB's on static ice for 23$. Half of something that is priced at twice what it should be is not a bargain.

    • Shipping is free on this offer. Add it to your cart and see.

    • You have a point, so I + you to counter your three -

    • from staticice I can see Strontium 16GB USB devices
      http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=strontium+16gb&…

starting at $23. Personally, I'm a little wary of some at the cheap end if I haven't dealt with them before. (Last time I tried, I found out the businesses did not have any in stock and weren't going to stock any more :S)

That said I recognise one of the three businesses so … yeah, $40 may be the RRP but it's not a price that shoppers would want to compare against.

However everyone else is saying you can get free shipping from here so the net price sounds good.

  • Can't find a website for them to find this out for myself.
Does it meet XBOX 360 Performance speed requirements.
(Half mine don't & some do)
    Thanks

  • Great deal thanks. I had just brought 8gb usb from Big W for $17, so will be returning that :)

  • +11

The credit card verification is completely ridiculous. You're asking for a silly amount of information, and you're only doing it on the screen after an order's been submitted. A copy of a bill, a copy of the back of the card and a signed letter for every single order? At least I've learned never to buy from Centrecom, they clearly can't be trusted.

    • Thanks for the info, I won't be purchasing from them.

  • +4

    What does this mean?

"Please Note: Image strictly for display purposes ONLY, brand, colour and style prone to constant change."

I hope its not like a lucky dip in a bag of generic 16GB USBs…

  • yeah don't use a credit card

    that's just ridiculous

  • deleted

  • $20 delivered for a 16GB stick is a good price. Their CC authorisation process sucks but you can pay by direct debit and save the 2% CC charge.

  • ordered! Bank transFer ok, did before. thanx!

  • Great price for a 16gb usb. It is even a clunky process for bank deposit. Says your order number is on the next page, and it isn't. Had to go back into 'My Account' before i could get the order number to deposit the money.

    • +1

or you could check the email they send you confirming order number and transfer details?

  • +4

Sounds like a good deal but I am not giving a +ve as the credit card payment process sucks!

  • Just ordered one used the DD option to save all the hassle of CC process :)

  • +1

Hey REP why no PAYPAL ???

    • +4

Because he does not want to send all his profits to them

Cheap prices and paypal do not work well together.

      • +7

They have to do extra verification work as mentioned above:

A copy of a bill, a copy of the back of the card and a signed letter for every single order?

The labour cost involved in the credit card verification process would be saved if they used PalPal even if they had to absorb the 2.5% PayPal fee.

Otherwise, if they can charge a 2% credit card fee why not also charge a PayPal fee? PayPal payment processing is automated and would be far easier to implement than their convoluted credit card payment process.

To say that cheap prices and PayPal do not go together is just not right. There are costs associated with all types of payment methods. There has been endless cheap bargains posted on OzB that offer PayPal.

Anyway you look at it, it's a dodgy process because they only tell you about the CC fee just before you click the "Confirm" button after you've filled in all your details. And they don't tell you about the CC verification steps until after you've placed your order.

EDIT: Also, it is misleading that they list this USB drive at $40. They just made up this figure to make the so-called saving of $20 sound good. Have a look at some other stores selling the same drive. It's real value is $30-$35 and even below.

I also don't trust CentreCom based on their previous behaviour here on OzB, including sockpuppeting and other misleading behaviour.

        • Informative post, thanks for your comment. Will be keeping clear as well.

        • +5

I made the mistake of placing a sizeable order (basically a system's worth of stuff supposedly in stock) with Centrecom a couple of years ago & paying by direct deposit. :(

After six weeks of frustration, phone calls to their idiot staff, and being repeatedly told "I shwear to gawd mate, shtock wool be in today & it wool be shipped tomorra mate", or "Aw yer, there was a mistake wiff your orda mate"…I finally got my order! Had I paid by CC I'd have cancelled it after a fortnight, & saved myself a lot of time & hassle! I was filthy; the prices on several items had dropped considerably in that 6 weeks! :(

Never, ever again will I buy from Centrecom, I don't care how cheap they seem! ;)

        • totally agree

      • Would this be a bad deal if it cost $42 to cover paypal fees ??? I have no intention of supplying extra information aswell as my CC number

    • +1

      • paypal fee along with disputes will drive top bargains away.

        • That is just not right.

        • +2

if you dispute it, it's not a bargain.

        • hehe… I pick up some sarcasm.

    • Pppaypal… noooo, give me a couple of pages and i will tell you why!!

  • Thanks I'll have 2. Can't put confirmation email address in bank reference as the field os too small. Agree the process is a little flawed but we battle through when we gets a bargain don't we :-)

    • They want the order number in the reference field. Not your e-mail.

  • +1

Does it have one of those loops so you can attach it to your keychain?

    • +3

You'd hope so, there has to be some way to wear it considering it was posted in the Apparel section.

  • +8

LOL, it is noiseless as well

    From features
Acoustic noise: 0 dB (at one meter)

    • hehe.. aren't most (infact all) USB thumbdrives noiseless anyways :).

    • If you are closer than a meter is is noisier?? :-)

  • Good deal, Strontium though huh? Doesn't sound to stable, hope the sucker doesn't burst into flames

  • Kinda makes me regret buying the $31 Sandisk:

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/33200

Anyone know how the speed would compare?

    • +4

I would take the SanDisk over this one.

    • Don't be :)
Those no-name brands usually have crappy speed and sometimes will corrupt the files.
      Wouldn't touch them :)

      • +1

agreed. when it comes to items like this, reliable trusted brand names only. especially if you are going to be storing important files.

  • REP!

Can i pick up at the Hawthorn store?

  • i would be wary with these no name big storage drives. i suggest you complete a full test on them when you recieve them to find out if they're legit.

I was given a 16gb no name flash drive for a small price with my laptop purchase from a reputable store in sydney. after completing a few test we figured out it was a fake and contacted the store. even the store didnt realise they were selling fakes.

  • +9

Wow what a hassle! No Paypal, epic fail. Well okay I dragged myself out of bed to get my credit card, well the troubles dont end there, they just began, you have to jump through all sorts of hoops for paying by credit card. Damn, I had to provide less doco to get my home loan. This must easily be the worst online business, I have ever seen.

    • +4

To my undying shame, I have wasted so much money on (oz)bargains that I have unintentionally memorised my credit card details.

      • Champion effort!

  • Must be going crazy, but can't seem to find the coupon. Could someone please point me to it, or post it - thanks

    • Its right on the top "halfpriceusb"

    • browser does'nt always see it.

Also, are they clearing these out for the usb3 versions?
Should be a lot of 'bargains' coming.

  • Thanks, didn't realise that - think I must be a bit simple!!

  • Beware, no name brands like this often have terrible transfer speeds… might be 16gb, but if it takes you a couple of hours to transfer it, what's the point (yes that's an exaggeration, but they can be really slow).

  • Thanks. Just ordered one. Used PO Box as deliver address so hopefully won't have any problems with that.

  • Great deal even though it is not a well known brand.

I can understand their caution with CC's… clearly they have been stung and more than once i would say?

  • can someone explain where to put the coupon code? Is it the additional notes box looks like it'd fit heaps of text?

    • The coupon code is in the description. The coupon code anyway: halfpriceusb

  • A usb stick thats basically no name from a company i dont trust, no thanks

  • +3

When you start to get to 16+ GB for a USB stick you need to get one with a reasonable transfer speed otherwise it's a painful process if you do a lot of file movement like I do.

I have used similar generic ones just like this one and they are too slow for me.

  • Ordered one via direct deposit, pity credit card process is a bother.

  • I just went thru the process of paying via credit card … sent it away … then the next screen they want me to fax my signature … at this point I decide I want to withdraw my purchase (at this stage I believe the purchase process has not been completed) … my account indicates "awaiting credit card info" … how do I cancel this order!!!

    • Simple… contact them and ask to cancel the order!

    • Contacted Centrecom today … decided to go thru with the deal … was told how to proceed via direct payment … now everthing is OK … still not happy the way they don't fully inform you about the extra procedures required after you send off your credit card details … what a …king pain!!!

  • +2

I have exactly the same usb key and it is crap !!! After using a few times, the usb head starts to slide in inside it's main body when you try to put it in a usp port of your PC and this prevents a full contact with the usb port and it does not gets recognised. There is a smaall hole at the other end and I devised a manual work-around by using a paper clip to push the usb head out again while connecting it to a usb port. Too much hassle!! I just threw it away in the end. Just remember the design of the usb key because it is a generic usb key and is being branded and sold by many daily online discount providers.

  • Not much of a bargain I'm afraid. Go to your local Aldi. You can buy exactly the same unit for $18.

  • Received my USB key today in a sealed package.

Write performance was 13.1MB/sec sustained - copying from my SSD to USB (started at 16 MB/sec, never went below 13.1 MB/sec)
Read performance was 18.2MB/sec sustained - copying from USB to my SSD

$20 for 16GB at this speed sounds like a good bargain to me..

    • Thanks for reporting back the speeds.

Paid on sunday. USB stick arrived in PO Box Sydney north today.
