New Customers Telstra BYO Plan - 20GB Data + Unlim Calls/Sms for $49/Month + $200 Gift Card (for Ported Numbers) @ JB Hi-Fi

3280

So the JB Hi-Fi deal is on again.

I wanted to provide some clarity on how I went about it as I have seen these questions answered a number of times. I have successfully gone through the process so wanted to share:

I was a Telstra post-paid customer as of this morning
I went into Vodafone and purchased a $2 SIM Starter kit and worked with the in person lady to port my number across. This whole process took about 10mins
I actually added $8 of data/voice credit as I needed my phone right away before getting into JB - I don't think this step is necessary
I went into JB hi-fi and signed up to the plan as a new customer roughly an hour after switching to vodafone

Everything is up and running successfully. Apple music is renewed for free for 6 months and I've got the full 20gb data.

All in all, a quick easy process and well worth the effort.

      • Thanks for the heads up, this is something else to consider if I port to Telstra.

        • the optus data share sims are great if you have some dual sim phones in the family which we do …… voice on telstra and data on optus.

      • I assume then that it won't work with the new Apple watch series 3 (LTE)? That uses the numbersync to "share" the cellular connection with the iPhone, but it does allow you to use voice on the watch - without the phone in range. I assume that is a normal voice call and not a VoIP one? Anyone on this plan with a Apple watch Series 3 with LTE?

Confirmed $200 voucher at JB Watergardens. Speak to Fabian or Kiel. Fantastic customer service. Couldn't be happier.

    • We're you already an existing customer?

      • Nah was with virgin

  • Hmm really tough decision!! Got $30 for 10gb at the moment with Telstra… plus want to buy something significant from in Jb at the moment anyways

    • How did you get 10gb for $30?

      • +1

Weaselled my way into a $10 discount and then got them to apply unidays $10 promotion on top last year and included the international pack, was pretty difficult but a cracker of a deal. Managed to get them to match it on another mobile too so have 20gb shared between the two of us for $60 :D

  • Signed up to this last week. Simple process. $49, 20GB and $200 which was spent towards a coffee machine. Loving it. No international calls though.

  • Couple q’s!

If I’m with Boost, would I need to port over to Voda before hand?

And, if I were to get a family member on this deal, would they need to be in the store for it to be processed? Or could I just bring in their I.D etc?
    Cheers!

    • +1

I'm pretty sure you can't be on Boost as it counts as being Telstra. It's the one that gets caught on this deal. Switch to Voda then switch back

      • Ok good to know. Thanks mate.

  • If you have Telstra Broadband already on your account as well as mobile, can you port out, then port back in and register back under your old account?

    • Yup, that's exactly what I did and actually made signing back up a lot quicker and easier.

  • No international allowance is a deal breaker to me personally, otherwise I'd be all over it

    • +3

who use international these days, when you got whatsapp or wechat calls etc..

      • +4

Unfortunately the bank I have my overseas accounts with and pretty much any business I deal with overseas do not use Whatsapp or wechat or any of those things.

Nor do my 70+ year old grandparents, my dad, and about half my extended family.

        Other than that, great point.

        • You can pay dirt cheap rate for normal phone calls on wechat, viber etc..or if not sign up a dirt cheap VOIP account like Telecube

    • Skype call is so cheap nowadays and woolworths has the skype card at 40% off on sale from times to times and if you pay using woolies gift card purchased from cashrewards, that's an extra 5% discount on top.

If you don't need to buy from JB, someone will buy your GC at 10% discount and you get $180 cash in return. Put it on facebook or gumtree.

your net monthly cost will be (($49x12)-$180)/12 = $34 with 20gb data and you are with the largest carrier in Australia in terms of coverage :)

  • my plan doesnt end till next march and has a $180 early plan termination charge and a $205 device buyout charge. is it possible to pay the plan termination charge, port out to voda and back to telstra and recontract with this deal and keep on paying the device off?

    • +3

      Short answer no

    • I would say not. You would need to payout your plan and device

  • +2

Just ported at jb southland. Old sim went dead before the contract was even signed

  • +3

I might go for it. Really sick of flOptus.

    • Are you living at regional?

      • +1

No, commuting around cbd. Mobile internet sucks big time.

        • +1

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Having tried both Optus and Vodafone, I found you really can't do anything while you're commuting.

        • I moved to Telstra a while back, the coverage is better but not perfect

        • +1

@pingMarky: make sure that your phone can do B28 spectrum to fully utilised Telstra 4gx network. Some cheaper android phones don't have this capability.

  • +1

For vodafone is the $2 sim a pre-paid sim?

Didn't think you could port your number from post-paid sim to pre-paid sim.

    • yes it is prepaid.
I just ported and it took seconds

  • going at this rate, Telstra gonna be the most congested network soon lol…

Any reason Telstra doing this mass deal?

    • They've invested hugely since the outages so I doubt congestion will be noticeable if it exists at all.

  • Toretto
Why not use internet app such as What's app or Line? Maybe worth investigating as get five free international calls a day on each. Am sure someone with greater knowledge will have better ideas and be able to tell all the deficiencies of my newbie suggestion. Hope it is still on offer when I return from hols

    • Hi Joy - personally I would need to be able to make normal calls to a landline without the other end needing to have an app or special account. I think that rules these out.

  • +1

Crap, signed up for the $30 Optus deal yesterday :(

    • +1

There's a cooling off period, you can likely change your mind (with low/no fee).

I switched to Optus a little while ago, but am having reception problems in an inner suburb. I'll probably switch back to Telstra. A housemate broke contract to leave Vodafone because of the poor reception (you pay out the device, if applicable) but they had to go through a troubleshooting process.

Contracts give you some rights (cooling off, early termination of service). Make sure you use them.

      • Thanks for that! I'm inner city too but haven't been with Optus for years.

      • i just took a look. it seems only 24 month plans have "Try Our Network for 30 Days".

        • Hmmm, I had a different experience. I called Optus around the 2 week mark (when I switched back to Telstra) and they confirmed I could break my contract + pay nothing for the service to date. That was a 12-month SIM only plan.

        • @enigma48: interesting. did you have coverage issue of sort? if you did, you could always get out. this "Try Our Network for 30 Days" is like leave without having to give any reason.

        • @charng: Yep, my inner city suburb was "covered" but I had calls drop and poor quality calls. I called them and just said "I'm a new customer, having issues, and I'd like to cancel". Took about 10-15 minutes including hold times and zero pushing from me, no troubleshooting needed.

        • @enigma48: cool. good to know. thanks.

  • Aldi ports fine, just signed up.

  • Is this nation wide?

  • Good deal. Signed on last week. Now just waiting for ps4 slim to go on sale at jb

  • +1

I signed up to the $49 Mx BYO plan about a month ago, just enquired about this deal on Telstra chat and managed to have an extra 10GB of data thrown in at no charge!

    • Ok this is exactly what I need to do. Any tips from your chat transcript?

  • Existing telstra post paid customer here. Visited 2 different jb stores. Was told by both stores the port out and port back in option would not work. I'm guessing everyone who has done this have not mentioned to jb they ported out within the last few hours?

    • Yup I did and he said it wasn't an issue which turned out to be true, I literally said that I was on Telstra a few hours ago.

      • Cheers. Will just port out tomorrow and not mention anything to jb when signing up

        • Please do let us know how it goes.

        • For this deal, port out and in is ineligible (specifically stated) so if we see it (which we can) and the employee is aware of the restriction (which they should be) then…Yeah…Just be aware you may lose the $10 credit.

        • @Chiselhendrix: what happens if staff are aware of this yet still process it through with the $10 credit? Do they lose their commission from telstra/jb or anything like that?

        • +1

@Xpertbastard: we can process it. We could 1. Lose the sale, 2. Lose the commission, 3. Open up a possible conversation with Telstra in regards to ineligibility applications, 4. Maybe nothing will happen to us but customer loses credit, or 5. Nothing happens. It's a gamble unfortunately…

        • What if we ported today and then waited until the 29th before taking up the deal, would that be enough time to not technically count as a port out and in?

        • @Pandaboss: just completed the deal. Existing telstra post paid to Vodafone pre paid then back to this plan. Got the gift card.

        • @Xpertbastard:
Thanks mate! I'm also trying to get my partner onto this as she is vodafone currently.

But for me sadly I am no where near a JB and won't be until next Wednesday :(

Will that expire at midnight or all good through the day of 29th?

        • @Pandaboss: not sure mate. I watched the jb hifi salesperson put through my order and saw it pop up as existing customer on the screen. He put me down as a new customer anyway. Hope you get the same to get the deal.

  • My contact expires in February. I hope they do this deal again.

  • +1

Anyone tried to get JB to honour it without a port in? Telstra was more than happy to offer the $49 for 20GB as an existing customer. But I want that voucher

    • were you still within contract or out?

  • I’m going to wait to hear from anyone else who has ported out from Telstra then ported back in.. just hoping it isn’t luck of the store (although how could it be.. but just my luck I’d port out and be stuck with Vodaphone!).

    • Will try tomorrow and let you know

      • Thanks Xpertbastard! If it works I’ll go out at lunch, port to voda the pop into JBHiFi on the way home.

    • I managed to port out and in via Vodafone. The salesperson at JB Hi-fi could see that I was a (former) customer of Telstra but still processed it. They have to manually choose the bonus options ($59 plan with $10 credit and extra 5GB data).

      • Did you port over from Telstra post paid to voda on the same day?

        • Yes. I was only on Vodafone for around an hour. I had dinner in between ports.

        • @jkiht9: Well it worked. Ported to Vodafone prepaid then ported back toTelstra successfully! Trying to sort my Apple Music out as I already had a paid subscription.

  • +1

    Any international calls?

    • No

  • Is visual voicemail (MessageBank plus) for iPhone included in this plan?

    • Yep! The guy chose he option when signing me up

  • Will this deal become out of stuck or something similar? Or they will honour it till the 29 no matter how many people sign up??

  • Just signed up on Elizabeth st Melbourne and took 2 minutes to port - thanks!

  • nicely done, but have to give vodafail a thumb up for the swift porting process.
Took me more than 24 hrs to port to Telstra from Vodafail.

  • Not bad but I would assess whether sim swapping between telstra/voda might still be a better option (for some). I know the days of $5 and even $1 /month sim jumping seems to be over but there are plenty of other offerings available. Admittedly my current phone has every oz 3g/4g band except b28(700)… Leagoo T5…. but there are pockets, even in my regional area of Queensland, where I get better reception from vodaphone/lebara.. but for those not wanting to sim swap and with local stock 4g 700mhz phones (and the need for 20gb!) this deal is worth a thought

  • Do you get $200 gift card straight away? Can you use it same day?

    • +1

Yes you get it on the spot

  • On the Telstra website it says that the 6 months worth of Apple Music is only available to new Telstra Apple Music customers.. I used to be a Telstra customer when a similar promotion was running for Apple Music, but I changed to Optus some time ago. If I come back on this offer, anybody know if I'd still be eligible for the new Apple Music promotion as well?

    • I'd like to know this too!

      • Yes you will be since it’s a new contract

        • +1

I can confirm it works seamlessly as well so an extra 6 months free is a really nice bonus.

  • +1

just got back from JB, for an extra $10 a month i was able to get a galaxy S8 although:

    24m plan instead of 12m
    15gb instead of 20gb
    no $200 voucher :(

    • $60 plan for an S8? Winning!

    • The guy tried convincing me to do that also. I told him i already had an s8+ but he still persisted.

    • Hi, may I know which store offer that ? And do you have that phone plan link? Cheers.

      • No link. Temporary offer. Available at any JB.

        • Thanks, is that BUY contract or LEASE contract?

        • +1

@jassssone: $59 BYO plan over 24m, with a $0 handset repayment attached after discounts. If you cancel you need to pay what you owe on the phone.

        • @Dealhunter967671: Hi, thanks for info. Do you know how temporary the offer is?

        • +1

@BugsBunnyAUS: I think it runs til just before Christmas, and while stock is available!

        • @Dealhunter967671: ah cool, just wanted a few days to think it over (24 months…yikes, commitment!). but it is a good deal (even without a $200 voucher :P)

  • Existing telstra post paid, ported to vodafone at 7.30pm and when i went to jb at 8.30pm it showed that i was still with telstra. Jb mentioned to try tomorrow however also warned that on telstra side they might be able to see that i was an existing customer and might not honour the $10 credit. Jb had no problem with processing it and providing the voucher. Will provide an update tomorrow.

    • Update: porting worked fine JB gave me the offer on 17/11/17 and the $200 voucher. Today received my first telstra bill showing $49 (59 with 10 credit)

  • Signed the Mrs an I up after i ported to Vodafone from telstra business.
Got the deal and because the 2 numbers are on the one account i got an extra 5gb. So 45gb a month shared between us and $400 in gift vouchers.

    Today is a good day!

    • You should have got 50GB - 5GB for each number extra!
