New Customers Telstra BYO Plan - 20GB Data + Unlim Calls/Sms for $49/Month + $200 Gift Card (for Ported Numbers) @ JB Hi-Fi

3280

So the JB Hi-Fi deal is on again.

I wanted to provide some clarity on how I went about it as I have seen these questions answered a number of times. I have successfully gone through the process so wanted to share:

I was a Telstra post-paid customer as of this morning
I went into Vodafone and purchased a $2 SIM Starter kit and worked with the in person lady to port my number across. This whole process took about 10mins
I actually added $8 of data/voice credit as I needed my phone right away before getting into JB - I don't think this step is necessary
I went into JB hi-fi and signed up to the plan as a new customer roughly an hour after switching to vodafone

Everything is up and running successfully. Apple music is renewed for free for 6 months and I've got the full 20gb data.

All in all, a quick easy process and well worth the effort.

  • I have a pre-paid Vodafone…… Looks I need to have the actual phone/sim with me when I go to JB?

    • Not necessarily. They'll just give you a new Telstra SIM.

Out of interest, why wouldn't you have your phone with you?

      • It's my 15 year old son's phone.

  • Any working holiday visa holders that successfully got this deal?

  • +1

Telstra wanted me to complete a 6 page transfer of ownership document, a signed letter and 100 points of ID and and 7 days to go from Business to Consumer systems.
I ported out of Telstra Business to Vodafone prepaid yesterday in about 5 minutes.
Today I went to a JB and the port in was going to be done over the phone with the call centre and there was going to be a 30 - 40 minute wait, so I left and went to a larger store nearby and was processed in 10 minutes by the staff member on the pc in store. and added to our personal Telstra account. No issue with being recently on Telstra

  • Anyone else tried to activate the 200gb free onedrive? The link isnt working for me one I login- https://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/onedrive

  • -1

Pretty sure this deal is expired now. No longer advertised in store and their marketing material noted the deal expires on 20th

    • OP's advert says 29/11

      • Interesting, they took down all of the gift card and $10 credit down from the parramatta store

    • The 2 stores i visited in Vic today had dozens of signs up at 1pm today

  • So is this deal still on? I don't want to do the porting back & forth thing. I genuinely want to swap over from Vodafone to Telstra (keeping my number) and get the $200 gift card. I'm in VIC btw..

    • You only have to port back and forth if you're already with Telstra.

      • Oh rightio… Thanks.

Going to JB to sign up for this deal on Thursday!

  • Unless you are after Telstra network, the Optus deal seems an alternate deal (less data), but some international calls https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/343033

Also, do Telstra allow second sim for just data?

    • +1

      yeah $5 extra

  • +1

I ported out of Telstra into Optus prepaid 2 days ago - thought I would suck it up for 30 days for 3,000 FlyBuys - yeah, nah.
Just back from JB Oxley - Chet logged into Siebel and did it all online. My Optus service stopped about 1 minute after all paperwork done, he then took me over to the sales counter to get the $200 gift card.
Bonus - my Telstra messagebank settings still worked…
Bonus 2 - it "recombined" data with the mobile already there, so we now have 25Gb to share
Bonus 3 - Got an email from Telstra with another 500Gb of data for our cable service

Rightio - let's have a crack at $105 CR and the Family and Friends plan

OzB - you've done it again!

  • Hi Guys.

Is there any way to grab this offer online without visiting JB Hifi? Here in WA Jb hifi kinda useless. Tried on weekend in Canningvale - staff had to call Telstra but Telstra didnt open on Weekend.

Today, on my breaklunch, barely someone help on Telco section.

    Thanks

    • -1

      No.
Otherwise sign up with Telstra direct if you're not fussed about the $200 gift card. It'll make things easier.

  • Did my one yesterday, it did not go that smoothly. Bought vodafone $2 sim card and ported out. It took 3 hours. Then went to JB in Broadway, people were rushing in for Iphone X. The staff do not know how to do the Telstra signup and it took almost 1 hours in order to finish the whole thing. The manager did ask whether I had any Telstra connection. Anyway it is not shown on the system. The porting then took the night and was completed only this morning. Anyway, still a worthwhile exercise. I was shocked however, to see a new advertised BYO plan for the same 20G data for 12 months @$89/month + $200 store credit. How that can happen while a much cheaper one is still valid?

  • Stay clear of Clarkson JB here in Perth unless you want to deal with absolute muppets.

First attempt they stuffed up (no additional 5GB added) and the order had to be cancelled then I was told the plan had to be a 24 month sign up, like WTF?
After producing the screenshot they then agreed to honour the 12 month contract though my email was entered incorrectly which added further delay..

What a serious struggle it was for those guys and to make things worse I've just used Telstra online chat to clear up their mistakes and reapply for the whole deal again over the phone directly with the telco :(

Worst experience ever, JB you have done it again!!

    • Well that not all muppets at all stores here in WA. Went in yesterday to JB Osborne Park with a friend and James was totally on to it and very friendly. He had us both done in a matter of minutes and while he was doing the paperwork I was already ported to Telstra. As an added bonus both my friend and I received a $10 credit on top of the $200 that came with the deal.

So happy to be rid of Vodafone.

  • Can anyone confirm if current Boost Pre-paid must be ported out first?

    • +2

I believe it's been confirmed in previous offers that Boost needs to be ported out first as, just like a Telstra number.

      Good luck

      • Damn.. thanks for the reply, I'll give it a go and report back anyway.

  • +1

Ported to Vodafone pre-paid yesterday at Vodafone Southland.

Ported back to Telstra post-paid today at JB Hifi Chadstone.

Then used the $200 gift card to buy blu-rays which are 20% off at the moment, then added the 10% member bonus on top.

Some were "buy 2 for $30" (Blu-ray) or "buy 2 for $40" (Blu-ray Ultra HD)

But essentially the sticker price was $311.82 and I used $181.36 off of the $200 gift card.

So still have $18.64 left to spend another day.

So worth the time and effort, considering Telstra was charging me $110 per month beforehand as I had just come off contract with them.

  • Didn’t work.

Was a Telstra prepaid customer. Ported to Vodafone successfully today.

When I went to JB to sign up the guy went through the entire process with me (took about 40-50mins) but at the end he kept getting an error message that said Access ID already in use. He called the manager and she shut the whole thing down and said I’d need to have been disconnected from Telstra for at least 30 days to get the deal.

    Sucks!

    • I am scared now. I was going to port from Boost to Vodafone to get this deal today. I thought Boost was separate from Telstra. But others have said Boost customers needed to port out to get this deal. Did anyone have any luck today? Any one gone through porting out and in successfully?

      • I ported back to Telstra today without any issues.

The Sales Guy tried to set me up but it kept saying duplicate customer, so I said I was a previous Telstra customer recently.

Eventually, he asked how recently and I said in the last week.

Sales Guy: so you ported off of Telstra and now you're porting back to Telstra to get the deal?
Me: Yep, quite a few people are doing
Sales Guy: Is this posted online somewhere?
        Me: Yep, OzBargin

The Sales Guy just smiled and continued by looking up my old account and adding a new service to it.

        • Hey klif, did you port out to Vodafone? And how many hours did you stayed on Vodafone before going into JB hi-fi?

        • @he88388:

I ported out to Vodafone around midday on the 23/11

I ported back to Telstra around midday on the 24/11

        • Being honest pays :) well done

  • I ported from Telstra to Vodafone at Unley Vodafone (Adelaide) today. Ported within 5 mins of signup.
I then went to JBHiFi in Rundle Mall. Lady asked me if i've ever had an account with Telstra i said yes, she looked me up and said "cool you've got your internet with them want me to add it to that account"…i could see that there were 2 accounts and she only looked at the internet one…I think she knew what i was doing but was ticking the box of asking me and looking up (and just ignoring the other account i had). She processed me in about 10 mins…very easy, and i got the $200 voucher. I was joking with her that she looked like she knew what she was doing and she said this promo had been very popular.

    • Shits. My order did not go through today as it is showing my number is still active on their system even though I waited 10mins after Vodafone has been activated.

  • Fail for me. Ported out from Telstra post-pay (my contract ended a few days ago) to Vodafone pre-pay successfully this morning. Went into JB HiFi Osborne Park (WA) this afternoon and tried to get the deal. When I gave the sales guy my details he went into their system and it showed my number was still registered in Telstra system so he couldn't do it. I explained the situation and said how heaps of people hand done exactly the same successfully, but he said even though he would love to sign me up, and JB doesn't care, the Telstra system simply won't let them do it whilst the number still shows as in their system. He said after my billing cycle resets, the Telstra system should clear out of the system, but unfortunately that's after this deal expires :(

    • My number was still in their system at 11.30am. I went on live chat to confirmed that my prepaid account was deactivated on their system at 4.30pm. So I went back to JB again to complete my application and it was successful.

  • I signed up for this deal in my local JB Hifi on Thursday night, and still didn't have my number ported today (Saturday). Spent an hour and a half on the phone to Telstra, and they told me my order was cancelled due to an input error of my Optus account number from the store worker. No notification to let me know or anything. It's now working as the person on the phone pushed my order through again, but my account is only showing 15GB of data instead of 20GB. Has anyone else had this issue?

    • My account is showing 15g as well. I am very sure JB told me $49 for 20g contracted for 12months. Price and data don't change after 12 months until you change your plan.

    • Hi Hayden, my account still shows only 15g since signing up yesterday. Did you get yours fixed and how?

      • I just successfully got mine fixed by using the 24x7 chat. I linked the agent to the Imgur image of the deal (in this post), and he fixed my account for me. Good luck with yours!

        • I got it done successfully via live chat as well. All good now.

    • Just wondering, did you manage to get the $200 JB gift card as well? We have the same issue so ill have to go back to the store to get it fixed. But the store worker said if Telstra manually fixes it on their end then I wont be able to claim it as it wont be processed by JB. Strange

  • The Onedrive 200gb free cloud storage promo is working again now. Link was down the last week. https://www.telstra.com.au/latest-offers/onedrive

  • Hey y'all, is porting still only open Monday to Saturday? We can't play phone plan roulette today ? :)

    • +1

Porting is closed Sunday and public holidays. So tomorrow is the last day to do it. Good luck. I thought I was unsuccessful yesterday as my number was still in Telstra's system after porting out for 10mins. I went back later towards the end of business and it went through no problem. But I can only see 15g instead of 20g. Wonder should I wait till Monday or sort it out today.

      • +1

I think it ends on the 29th right? Don't wanna be doing this on the last day! :)

        • +1

My bad. Yep it ends on the 29th. Good luck.

      • I am having the same problem here.

Mine got 15GB data instead of 20GB.

I have even got biased answer from them:

1 - the first web chat told me their system was down yesterday (I trust that person as there is a notification on their portal)
2 - Second web chat this morning, the guy told me it's been all fixed and I was given an order number.

After hours of waiting, I checked the order status and the order got cancelled :-(

3 - The third web chat told me there is nothing they can do. I told them it is inconvenient to go back to store and the person told me they can't do anything about it. I told them if this is not resolved, I will contact TIO because of misleading information. The web chat person even disconnected my chat session when I asked him to give me the reference code. How rude!
4 - I called 132200 and Mark told me the 5GB bonus data is just for multi-service discount only. He told me I need to upgrade to $79 plan to get 20GB of data. I got the reference number.

I will try to come back to store but if this problem is not resolved, I will file a compliant to TIO.

        • I'll be doing the same if my exact issue doesn't get resolved. Keep this thread updated with what you try and what happens

        • @Jayden16: My plan got fixed.

I ended up going back to store and it seems they called Telstra to make changes to my order.
I guess they cancelled the plan and put another one in soon after. I got a new order number and order estimate. Also the plan start date changed.

However, this is not a great experience as they should have made those changes over the phone yesterday.

    • I just did it (about 4pm Sunday).

  • Just got my first bill and it came in at $59…the $10 credit had not been applied.

  • Signed up today. Still waiting for my number to be ported over. Spoke to Telstra online chat to confirm it was indeed 20GB per month at $49. The $200 gift card was nice too :D!

  • For some reason, I've only got 15GB of data.
Did the store rep miss anything?

I tried to contact Telstra 4 times. They told me it is not possible to get 5GB bonus because they are NOT trained to do that - I am sure they are lying.

    • +2

In JB HIFI they have to tick a box to get you the 5gb and another for the $10 reduction.

      • I believe so.

Yesterday I went through all of the procedures with the salesperson and it seems there are a lot more discount options in the system.

I wish they can fix this for me when I come back.

  • Was with Telstra prepaid till a couple of weeks ago when I switched to Woolworths prepaid. Got this offer today no problem.

  • Another thing to note is if you have a Telstra account (for example for home phone/internet), this deal will most likely go on the same bill. This means the mobile billing period is the same as your older services in that account. So the first mobile bill will be the remainder of the current billing month plus the next one (as you pay in advance).

  • Went into the Gepps Cross store today to try and get this deal, even though it wasn't advertised. Was pretty busy but ended up getting it through in the end with a little bit of technical difficulties. Was ported over literally before I even left the store. Got the $200 gift card on the spot and walked out without having to recharge my Optus prepaid that had expired that morning.

Says 20GB under the Telstra account I made, am pretty happy how fast it all went. Basically free $200 and a phone plan upgrade for an hours work.

  • Wasn't advertised at the Fyshwick (ACT) store but I called up earlier to confirm they still had the offer going. It's advertised at the Canberra Centre store (for anyone who's interested).

Signed up with no fuss. Ported from Amaysim - took about 10 minutes.

  • Ported from Boost Mobile to Vodafone on Friday night ($2 sim from woolworths). Number ported by 2pm Saturday (took ages, must have been an after hours thing).

Went to JB Hi Fi and the dude asked me "how long have you been with Vodafone, you need to be over 30 days". I had to tell a white lie and say it's been months.

When he got to doing the administration, he noticed i was still with Boost according to Telstra. He called up someone and they said they will clear it but could take 24-48 hours.

Went back to JB Hi Fi today and all good. Did the wifes sim card too (which was in my name with vodafone after also porting from Boost). So 2 x$200 gift cards PLUS a $10 bonus for each gift card = $20 + $400 = $420.00 for basically nothing.

    JB, YOU'VE DONE IT AGAIN!

    Thanks OP

  • is this deal expired now?

    • Today is the last day. Get in quick.

  • Didn’t work for me got rejected due to the porting not being 30 days

Be Warned, JB said they’ve been done by a lot of people gray don’t the system and getting caught out.

  • +1

Was told by Chadstone JB that this deal will run until the end of this year when I went to sign up today.

  • Cheers for the post OP. Ported from Vodafone prepaid this arvo without issue. I was also informed that JB GCs no longer expire - mine has NA as the expiry date. 😀

    • Same, kind of had to tell a white lie about how long I was with Vodafone though.

iPhone bought outright, use $200 gift card for Apple care and 20GB plan for the next twelve months I’m happy

  • Has anyone been successful trying this today?

    • +1

just tried it at Parramatta 2:45pm was told deal ended yearsteday
Only way the get the $200 is buy pixel 2on a plan.

  • I just went to JB and the deal is still on. Its apparently been extended but not published yet. Ill confirm when i do port, if I do it.

    • Which JB did you go to?

      • I m sure all JB . Since u are in melbourne . Go to Chadstone JB . They are still doing the promotion

      • +1

        Perth in Joondalup
        And now on New contract!

  • JB at World Square in Sydney still had the sign up today, so I'm assuming it might still be valid.

  • So ported over to this deal on the last day 29th November, Voucher in hand all good.
how has everyone found the speed of internet since they joined this plan?

i have found it to be fairly slow and intermittent, not sure if its coincidence but thought i would ask.

  • +2

Can this deal be marked as active again? I just called JB Chadstone (Vic) and they confirmed its extended nationwide until sometime in December. A win for those who haven't taken up the deal yet :)

  • +2

Deal is extended to Sunday, 31st of December 2017. Customers MUST be away from Telstra for the MINIMUM of 30 days to get the offer!

  • Got it ported today from jb DFO sydney. Thanks OzB.

  • +1

Has anyone else been able to port from Telstra Prepaid to Vodafone on the same day, and been able to get this deal, after the 29th Nov?

    • +1

I ported from Telstra prepaid to Vodafone (via the $2 sim) yesterday.
Today i went into jb hifi westfield sydney, ported back in and got the deal.

  • Deal is back on again.

Please use the REPORT link to let us know in future.

  • Guys. I have a data Sim in my android tablet and a Vodafone prepaid I use for calls. Can I port my Vodafone number to Telstra or would I be considered an existing customer

    • I had an existing data sim and they processed me as a new customer

      • Sweet baby Jesus thank you

  • Most comments here relate to porting but can I sign up for this as a new service even though I have other Telstra prepaid phone services? I plan to use this as a second SIM in my phone and downgrade the prepaid one to long life so I can keep my number that way.

    • Has to be a port, just asked JB clerk the same thing. He also mentioned something about you having been with the alternate provider for 3 months which both chuckled about when I asked how they check that. Asked about taking this with friends and family Pixel 2 offer/upgrade to, he was unsure but said he'd be giving it ago tomorrow for himself

  • +2

FYI. JB Having a 'buy $100 gift voucher get $10 discount coupon' offer. When you get your 200 card, ask for it in 2 x $100. the $10 voucher prints on the receipt, and you get $20 worth :)

Did mine today, ported to Optus in morning, then no dramas signing up in JB. 5 minutes later filled in website form for my family&friends and Pixel 2 should be here tomorrow.

Got 5GB bonus by chat, after 2nd attempt so back to 20G/month. Still hassling them to reapply the $10/mo discount, have tried 4 people already so maybe they onto it?

Strangely, plan seems to only be 12 months though - From my account portal:
Go Mobile Plus BYO Plan $59
Contract end date: 17 Dec 18

Contract ends in 13 months on - 17 December 2018
Changing your contract may incur one-off costs, including:
    Plan early termination charge $353.05
    Device buy out $0.00

    • What do you mean about the "Pixel 2 should be here tomorrow"?

Are you able to include the Pixel 2 as part of the $59 minus $10 discount contract?

Thanks for the $100 vouchers tip!

  • I initiated the porting from Telstra Prepaid to Vodafone Prepaid $2 SIM, yesterday around midday in Melbourne CBD.

It took until 9am today for the porting to be concluded. Vodafone confirmed there was an issue on Telstra side.

At midday of today, went to JB in Melb CBD. Staff was more than happy to provide me with the deal, but Telstra still had my account ID in their system.

JB staff suggested for me to give them a call in a couple of days, and they would confirm if my Telstra accountID was finally removed so they would be able to do the porting.

They are well aware of the deal and not worried about the 30 day minimum that other stores are enforcing, like JB on DFO South Wharf.

Will report once I finally get the deal, hopefully on Friday.

    • This is the same for me - I ported out the same time you did and had to wait till 9am yesterday for the port to be complete.

I went into JB Chadstone right after it got ported yesterday and my Telstra account was still in the system and so they couldn't proceed with the port in.

I realise that I still have access to my Telstra 24/7 account through the app, I might wait till that has been deactivated (hopefully today) and then head into JB again to get it all ported.

Will update too if I can get the deal too hopefully by today or tomorrow.

      • Seems like the deal is a no go for me.

I spoke with Telstra 24/7 chat to get them to deactivate my Telstra ID after porting to Vodafone. I confirmed that the login no longer worked so I thought that my details should be all gone off Telstra’s system.

Went into JB on Thursday to sign up again and their system still showed my account as active.

The rep at JB Hifi said that Telstra seems to have changed their system to keep accounts active on their system for the 30 days after port out. Not sure if it’s true or not but it seems to be for me.

I’ve ended up going to Optus prepaid for now and might wait out to see if the deal is still available after 30 days (rep said they might be extending it but don’t count on it). Hopefully you guys have more luck than I did.

  • Thinking of trying to do the port out - port in process today.

  • Hey guys.

I've finally managed to Port back. Happy!

    Tips:

Be friendly to the staff. They will be glad to help!

Telstra does not delete ported accounts after 48 hours. This is on purpose.

Contact Telstra directly by phone. It's the only way to properly delete the account from their system. Otherwise, it remains active despite number being ported (to Voda in my case)

Telstra has noticed people porting, and now maintains accounts on "Retired" Status.

This status means that you can Port back in, but you do need to pay Telstra $150 up front. This is taken into account as credit. So the next bill will be three months later.

JB in Melbourne CBD claims that promotion ends on the 24th. Be quick!

(Vouchers can be divided into two $100 gift cards, but they will only activate a $10 bonus credit on one)

Have fun with this process! Good on those that had it easier

  • Successfully completed this purchase yesterday (29/12/17). As per another poster I was on a Telstra Business Plan. I ported over to Vodaphone consumer the day before and then went to JB HiFi. They advised I was still showing as a Telstra Business customer and I 'suggested' they sign me up as a 'new' Telstra consumer customer which they happily did. Ported back to Telstra without issue after signing me up as a new customer. Port to Telstra completed and SIM activated while I was still in the store and walked out with my $200 gift card.

  • Hey guys, just wanted to update that I was finally successful in getting this offer yesterday (30/12/2017). Went to JB Hifi in Chadstone and told them I tried getting this deal before but wasn’t able to as was too close to previous port. Guy asked how long I’ve been away and said a couple of weeks and he said shouldn’t be a problem and immediately processed me through as a ‘new customer’ which seems to be the key for recently ported numbers away from Telstra.

Three times a charm it seems!
