New Customers Telstra BYO Plan - 20GB Data + Unlim Calls/Sms for $49/Month + $200 Gift Card (for Ported Numbers) @ JB Hi-Fi

3280

So the JB Hi-Fi deal is on again.

I wanted to provide some clarity on how I went about it as I have seen these questions answered a number of times. I have successfully gone through the process so wanted to share:

I was a Telstra post-paid customer as of this morning
I went into Vodafone and purchased a $2 SIM Starter kit and worked with the in person lady to port my number across. This whole process took about 10mins
I actually added $8 of data/voice credit as I needed my phone right away before getting into JB - I don't think this step is necessary
I went into JB hi-fi and signed up to the plan as a new customer roughly an hour after switching to vodafone

Everything is up and running successfully. Apple music is renewed for free for 6 months and I've got the full 20gb data.

All in all, a quick easy process and well worth the effort.

    • When you ported to vodafone did you have to choose a plan? I tried to port to kogan mobile but you need to choose a prepaid plan.

  • I signed up to this deal last week. Can I also get Apple music for 6 months? If so, what do I need to do?

    • Nevermind, I found the instructions :)

  • note if u sign up for 2 sims/contracts at the same time ( maybe after even) u get a bonus 10gb (2x5gb or 5gb a plan fir having 2 devices.
the cluey lady at jb hifi prahran k ew this.
its hidden away in t&c or account notes.
so i have 50gb to share over 2 devices per month on this deal.

also i signed up with amaysim an hour before i walked into jb hifi for the switchover and the telstra sims were workingwithin an hour.
amaysim is great as all u need is a $2 sim pack and u can go online and choose your number with up to 5 digits searchable - used to be more.
    some premium numbers are $30ea.
easy to waste hours playing with the system
3 same digits incur the premium fee or so e sequences.
occasionally u hit goldirt and can see theyve been given a block of 04111 numbers etc

    • I only got the extra 5gb on one of my sims, i wonder if i can get the other 5gb on the other now that I've signed up?

      • You're only meant to get it on second & consecutive eligible services.

        • +1

Ok, well i rang telstra and they added it for me.
          :D

        • @00000000: nice! So good!

        • @00000000:

What did you say? So you know have a total of 50gb?

  • What about criminal history check, credit check, working with children Check???

  • I recently got this plan from JB Hi-Fi with the last offer period and it was a seamless experience and I got my $200. I can also confirm that the Telstra One number for the Apple Watch works as well, but I had to call Telstra to activate it because it wasn't working in the online portal for some reason… YMMV
Overall, great deal and lots of data :D

  • Can I do this? Currently on Woolworths PrePaid.

Is there any online mention of this deal other than the OP's pic of a catalogue (which isn't on the JBHiFi site)?

  • Signed up the last time - no more data issues! Fantastic speed and the $200 gift card is a bonus!

  • Do they run an employment check? I just graduated and am still unemployed.

    • Credit check - yes. Employment - no, we ask but it's not relevant to your credit score.

      • Okay. My credit is not negative or whatever anyway. Been on phone plans for years and decided recently to try prepaid Telstra for unmetered Apple Music (I'm already on family plan so don't need the free 6 months), so I'd have to port away and back again like OP.

        • Just remember to read what I wrote RE: port out and ins in the thread previously first…It's dicey.

  • can this be done online…

    • +1

      NO

      • sux for us regional people…..

  • Took me 20 minutes in total. Well worth the effort.

Took 5 minutes in Optus store to process switch from Telstra post paid to Optus Pre-Paid on a $2 SIM.

Old Telstra SIM dropped out within 60 seconds of Optus processing the port.

9 minutes my order was complete in JB HIFI. New Telstra SIM in phone and within 60 seconds it was active.

    Too easy.

That's like saying: even though Fifa 18 is at it's cheapest price, you should buy Fifa 15 instead because it's slightly cheaper.
And perhaps you should factor in the $200 gift card and extra 4gb into your calculations?

Edit: Gift card itself saves about $16.67 per month. So the plan would work out to $32.33 per month ($1.62 per gb - compared to $1.64 per gb on your plan)

    • +5

4GB less per month, an upfront payment, connection to arguably the worst mobile network in Australia (Vodafone) and no $200 voucher, how is this better again???

  • how long before we can cancel our tesltra plan if we did this with a 2nd number?

  • +3

FYI Telstra are offering a $10 porting discount per month and 5GB bonus data on the Mx plans signed up online. So the Mx plan which is $49 and with 10GB data it will be $39 and 15GB data per month. For those that aren't fussed about the gift card, slightly cheaper and a slightly lower data allowance.
    Offered on chat.

    • +1

Good stuff HeyBargain! Got onto this deal.

To clarify, the $10 porting is available to anyone who is porting their number to Telstra.
The offer seems to only be available through chat or calling them up. Not through their website or physical stores.
The 5gb bonus data is only available if you have an existing service with them. i.e. internet, another contract of some sort.

If you're not fussed with 20gbs, it works out to be about 20 months to be even with the $49 plan. But by that time you would have saved $200 real world dollars as opposed to a JB hifi giftcard.

      • Very good
I was able to sign up to this with the bonus data without any other existing services with Telstra :)

        • I was on live chat and she was able to give me the Mx plan for $39 with 15g of data.
I have to do the order online and I am with Boost.
She told me that Boost is Telstra. So I said I have another number from Aldi.
Not sure if they knew that I ported out to say Optus they would deny me for the bonuses.
As this is all done online I am scare to port in and out and not get this deal.
Any good advice would be great.

        • @he88388:
          Hi
This https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/342509?page=1#comment-5294… seems to suggest you should port out to Vodafone and then port back to Telstra.
          Good luck.

        • @he88388: Do you mind explaining a bit about how did you get the $39 and 15gigs mate? Like did you order first then went to live chat or chat first?

        • @ALOZ:
I went to live chat and she confirmed that the $10 off and bonus 5g data is applicable to the MX plan.
Then she send me the link to order.
I did not go through with it as I have not switched out of Boost and the online application requires me to input my mobile phone number.
This is as far as I went before I exit out of online chat and exit out of online application.
I did not go through to the payment part and would not know how much it will cost me to send the order through to get a new sim card.

    • +1

Awesome, just signed up via chat!

      • Hey, How did you signed up with live chat.
Did you have to pay $39 and wait for the sim card to arrive?
        what is the process?
I want to port out of Boost and don't want to do it if they apply the 1 month porting out rule.

        • There was no mention of this 1 month porting thing…

For me, they signed me up through the online chat function on the tesltra website. (this is where you need to request the porting discount of $10 per month on the Mx plan).

Once signed up, they will send you a sim card in the mail. (2-3 business days)

Once you have the sim card you activate it online through the telstra activation link they give you.
They will then close your boost account for you (port out) and activate the telstra sim. (put it in your phone). Had to reset my phone a couple hours later for it to sync properly.

        • @TheBean:
I went on a few Live chat today and all of them are not giving me the bonus 5g unless I have 2 services with them.
They can only give me $10 discount for porting over to Telstra.
I think I have missed out.
They also pointed out that forums like Ozbargain and Whirlpool are not legitimate offers from Telstra.

        • @he88388:
Why would you mention Ozbargain and whirlpool?

The porting discount is an offer they are currently running and not made up by us?

If you see my initial reply, i only got the 5gb extra because i had a preexisting service.

I guess if you push hard enough or have the gift of the gab you can nab the 5gb without a second service like Heybargain.

        • @TheBean:
I did not mentioned Ozbargain nor Whirlpool, she just told me upfront that whatever I read in these forums are not legitimate offers and asked me to show her where I can see bonus 5g and $10 credit from Telstra website.
I just flicked her off real quick.
Well, a few minutes later, I spoke to billings team and they offered me the MX plan for $39 with 15g data but I have to go to the shop to do it.
Not sure why I had to go into a Telstra shop. I guessed it must be because I have a prepaid telstra sim card.

  • Do we need ID to sign up? And can you change the $200 gift card to 2x$100?

    • +1

      yep 2 forms of ID

      • +1

Cheers, thought that would be the case

  • Cheers OP!
45 mins worth of work at a cost of $2 for the Vodafone SIM, walked 100m up to JB, ported back as a new Telstra customer. Received an extra 15GB over my existing Telstra plan at the same price and got the $200 voucher. Winning!

  • -1

Anyone had a win doing this in WA? Trying to work out which in hi-fi will be the best to over look the port in-out

    • Yep, did it at the myaree store about an hour ago. Switched from Telstra pre-pay to Vodafone at about 9:30 this morning. They never asked if I had recently ported away.

  • I ported from Telstra to Vodafone this morning. I waited till the mobile account disappeared from the my telstra app and went back in this afternoon to sign up for the deal. No issues at JB. No questions asked. They did offer me the option of Samsung S8 or iPhone 6s (32g), as per the Telstra F&F offer, instead of the $200 gift card. They said that it was an in-store offer only and was not being advertised.

    • Hi antman. Which store?

    • For how much per month, with what data, and for what contract term? Thanks :)

    • Sorry guys but as I did not explore the free phone offer in any detail I thought that the free phone was a direct exchange for the $200 gift card. The sales rep did not tell me any different. In any case, it seems that the free phone only comes with the same terms as the Telstra F&F offer i.e. $59/month 15G and 2 year contract term. Please check you local JB for full details. Apologies for any confusion.

    • $200 gift voucher or S8 and you took the voucher? really?

      • I'd do the same. I don't want to be stuck in a contract for 2 years

      • +1

You can get the voucher first, then the s8 later..

  • Can someone tell me does port from Woolworths mobile work?
Is it only Boost that is counted as full Telstra?

    • It does. I had trouble using the account number and used my DOB instead and the port worked.

  • All works on my end… was with telstra post paid, went to Voda signed up with a $2 sim, waited 30 mins for it to be active then went into JB and did the deal… all up bout an hr of effort and voila better deal than i was on previously and $200 gift card!! ;)

  • If you take advantage of the extra data sims for $5 pm can you use them in a phone with a VOIP service?

  • Went into a store and no one in the building knew how to sign me up. Told me to come back another day…

  • Also looking to move my wife’s mobile to this offer. Does she needs to be physically present there as well, or can I visit a store with her ID to avail the offer?

I would also like to move both of our mobiles to the same Telstra Account. Does this require both mobiles to be on the same person’s name?

    • Ported out to Vodafone, two mobiles (myself and my wife), and ported back on to Telstra through this offer. Had no issues. Since both are on the same account now, we get a total of 50 gb data. 15+5, 15+5 and another 10. All 50 is shared. And in total $400 worth of gift cards.

Now what do I do with all these GBs of data!? :S

  • So is it true if I sign up two numbers I get an extra 5gb for each service meaning (25gb + 25gb = 50gb shared)?

    • yes that's what i got

      • Thanks for replying! What did you have to say? Is there any deal you have to mention?

        • Took awhile but got it $49 each service total shared data 50gb!!!! Plus $400 in gift cards!

  • Has anyone been rejected by JB yet …for existing telstra customers porting to prepaid (voda/optus) and back in ?

Also was anyione else offered the samsung s8 instead of the $200 credit with the $49 plan ?

    • I tried twice today and failed twice.
Ported my out of contract Telstra number to Vodafone this morning. Rejected by JB Knox city and glen Waverley in Vic.
I'm sad and stuck in what to do now :(

      • I'm in a similar situation, ported out to voda this morning.
Only to find out my account is still active with telstra when i went to sign up for the deal, one of the JB guys knew straight away what i was trying to do…and asked if i had read about this deal on here.
        I'm stuck in limbo too…

        • Might be worth trying again, I haven't decided yet but others seem to have had luck after us :'(

        • Ported out to Vodafone, two mobiles (myself and my wife), and ported back on to Telstra through this offer. Had no issues.

        • @nooberBAM:

Update: rejected for the deal at a second JB. As soon as they run my ID they can tell I have recently disconected my mobile, as my Telstra account is still active. Once I told the guy in had recently ported out, I was told I had to be ported outt for 30 days to qualify for the $200 voucher.

          Any suggestions?

        • @draf3:

Exactly same issue as you - my details display my old accounts and they don't progress from there. They also told me I had to be on a different carrier for one month - the guy at JB Glen Waverley thought they might run the same promotion again in the near future and advised me to stay with Vodafone until then, but I'm not keen on that maybe.
The staff at Knox JB told me to get a $2 Optus SIM with a brand new number and move it to this deal - but I didn't want to change my numbers and I don't want to call forward forever!

Not sure how others are getting around it - I've given up on this deal! It's made me frustrated and I don't want to visit more JB stores and waste my weekend.
So I went for the Telstra Family and Friends deal instead, $59 per month and the Samsung S8, managed to get an extra 5gb added so it's a total of 20gb per monhth. Not my first preference since I don't NEED a new phone, but better than staying with Vodafone pre paid!

    • Update: I ported out this morning to vodafone.. took 30 min to port

then went to JB hifi bankstown to get the $49 20GB plan with $200 gift card

  • A caution to those porting out and back…

Went into a jb today after porting to a $2 vodaphone sim yesterday, unfortunately I was informed that to qualify for this deal you need to have been with your current provider for 30 days. I assume this is a reaction to all the port outs/ port ins over the last couple of days. In the end I signed up for $59/month for 20gb over 12 months as I did not want to be stuck on the $2 prepaid sim. They decided to give me the 5gb bonus but not the discount of $10/month and $200 jb gift card.

    • At my local JB there was a sign saying no port out/port in for this promotion. They still went ahead and processed mine with no questions asked. Obviously this varies from store to store.

    • You can sign up on telstra website cheaper than that…

  • This is the best Ozbargain I've taken up this year. I've been with Optus on 8gb + all national calls + 300 international mins for $50 for approx two years.

I've recently been finding Optus coverage patchy recently so when this deal came up, I went straight to JB. Porting took about three minutes after the transaction went through.

Granted, no international calls, but only making a handful a month, I'm sure I can find a cheap VoIP to phone replacement.

Equally as good is I cashed in my $200 voucher for a pair of Apple Airpods which I was going to buy this weekend. Fortunately, Officeworks are selling them for $198 at the moment (RRP $229), so I got them to price match, and got a $2 card to boot.

    Cracking deal OP. Many thanks.

    • Isn't it a $100 voucher and $100 towards discounting the monthly price from $59 to $49?

Edit: Sorry my bad a wrong comment on the first page gave me that impression

      • Porting from another carrier give you a $10 discount off the $59 plan, so it comes down to $49 per month. On top of that, JB gives you a $200 voucher, which I used to buy a pair of Apple Airpods.

  • +1

Successfully ported to Vodafone from Telstra postpaid yesterday morning, ported back to Telstra today fine. Because it was from a Vodafone prepaid they just need your phone number and date of birth. Plus ID as well. JB staff member didn't see that I was with Telstra a day ago.

If they pull out the t and C's and say they won't do it just go to another JB.

Also it's already been said in the thread a couple of times but I will reiterate: they are offering 59 dollars a month for 24 months 15gb of data with a galaxy S8. No entry costs. If I didn't already have a phone I would strongly consider that deal

    • Anything stopping one to go back to JB tomorrow, and change plan to the $59 and get the S8, thus availing of the phone plus the $200 JB voucher I got today?

    • What jb store did you visit?

      • Capalaba QLD

  • Many thanks OP! Successfully ported out/in, took about 90min altogether.

Does anyone know if you need to set up a new Telstra ID? Can you add the new account to the old Telstra ID?

  • does anyone know if telstra have data sharing between different devices as i do with vodaphone? ie my phone, my wifes phone, and my in laws mobile broadband all sharing the same data pool.

I know they have data share options, just not sure if it enables the same thing, i just want to know if i can port my wife's number over, along with my in laws mobile broadband on a cheap option so they can pool the 20gb+1gb data allowance, and potentially my number further down the line on a cheap plan when i come off contract, still sharing the previous data allowance?

    cheers

    • you can get a data share sim for $5/mo. only for data, not voice.

  • a bit late now.. but anyone thinking of doing the porting in/out trick should be aware that mobile porting is very slow on sundays. i'll have to wait until monday to go into JB.

    • Yeah I had the same issue too, but at least they let me port out and in without any issues.

  • +1

I am just curious is there an expiry date for the gift card?

In other words, do you have to redeem it within a certain period or you get to keep it for as long as you need to?

    • 2 years. It’s a regular JB card.

      • Cheers

    • I was advised that even if the gift card says 2 years, they all have no expiry. JB staff told me this is a recent change to their gift card terms

      • That's sweet if true. I will ask them about it for sure. Thanks for the info

      • can confirm. JB Hifi employee said the gift cards no longer expire

  • I'm planning to go into jb today to get this offer.

Would a driver licence and medicare card suffice for proof of ID?

Also do they give you the gift card on the spot or they have to mail it?

    • Licence is fine.
They give you a physical card once the port has finished. Normally takes 15-30 mins

  • ** WARNING ** anyone thinking of porting off Telstra to a pre-paid service then back over to Telstra, I just tried this and it DID NOT work.

    1. 9am ported from postPaid telstra to Vodafone PrePaid
    2. 12pm went into JB who call a central JB number to do this over the phone
    3. They advised not eligible for $200 gift card OR the $49 for services ported off Telstra anytime in the last 30 days.
    • +1

I think it Depends on who you talk to.
Quite a few here have had luck.

    • +3

Just try another store. The one I went to did everything on the PC they had near the mobile phones. None of this calling a central JB number.

    • +1

One store said that I couldn’t do it and made up a story about the ACCC cracking down it. That sounded like absolute codswallop so I tried a second store and they were fine with it. I explained to them up front what I was doing and they said it wasn’t against the T&C’s.

    • you're right, went to Melb CBD store where they had staff with access to Telstra system in store and it worked

  • Managed to match this on Telstra chat (was on $59 MX BYO 10GB+2GBbonus-$10bonus plan, now on $59 Mobile Plus BYO 15GB+5GBbonus-$10bonus plan).

So same $$, but on a 5GB better base plan, and 3GB extra bonus, so 8GB better off.
