  • is this cheaper than last deal ?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/318078

    • last deal was way better, I was hoping they'd do the same this year :(

  • The last deal was still cheaper for the Yubikey 4 and 4 Nano. This one includes the NEO (with NFC) however, and the basic FIDO U2F Security Keys

  • Never used this things before. Curious as to what will happen if I lose the key, will I be able to turn 2-Step Verification off easily?

    • Depends on the site but almost without exception you get to print out some kind of backup or disable codes when turning on 2FA.

In the case of Google you can use the U2F key in addition to normal TOTP, backup codes etc (but not in conjunction with the push-notification prompt on your phone). Any of those second factors work so losing your key wouldnt be an issue (other than remembering to disable it so whoever found it couldn't use it).

  • You can set your phone number as a backup so you could receive an SMS code to access your account. As far as I know, depending on the service, you'll be locked out without any of your 2 factor authentication methods. Most services like Lastpass let you register more than one Yubikey, so you could register a spare and keep it safe as a backup.

  • Lost my souvenir mtgox yubikey, sad

  • Cheaper than the fastmail offer I got a few days ago.

    • I guess this gives you other Yubikey options too and not just FIDO U2F.
Also, good to see another Fastmail user :D

  • +1
    • But what bluetooth option can you use?

      • Only the one linked to on Amazon

  • Used on a new windows 10 build and had issues due to some new bs driver release made me think it was borked good for 2fa and traveling os

  • Can't justify the cost, can someone tell me why not use google authenticator app? Less hardware to carry around to authenticate yourself, plus the worry of losing it

    • These devices are somewhat more secure for two-factor authentication (just because of the way they work in hardware). Having said that, most services will require you to use Google Authenticator or some other soft-token system as well so that advantage is pretty weak.

You can also put PGP keys on many of them which means your PGP keys can't be stolen from your computer (because they can't actually be read from the device once on there).

An alternative to Google Authenticator is the Authy app. It has the advantage(?) that it provides a mechanism to transfer the TOTP to a new device.
