Great price! Packs a decent punch and the bluetooth feature is handy.

  • Apologies for a stupid question. Will the woofer and speakers be wired? Wondering if we can set the speakers apart to enjoy a better quality sound experience if it offers one

"The satellites plug into the back of the subwoofer via 70-inch color-coded proprietary cables" according to this review, and the pictures show the cables:

        Proprietary rca cables?

        • Haven't seen these but my other logitech speakers have a keyway.

        • +4

Proprietary in the sense that no other company followed their example - primarily because it is stupid. Guess what happens to your attached equipment when your 5-year-old child decides to unplug the connectors, and reconnect them to the wrong sockets? Amplifier high-power output connected to your DVD player or TV - what could possibly go wrong?

On other Logitech speakers like the Z623 and Z506, where one speaker has a headphone socket and power and volume controls, the "proprietary" connector is a D9 plug and socket, the same as used on PCs for the serial port. Again, a silly choice that could potentially cause damage.

        • @Russ: worries me that any 5yo has access power cables :/

        • @plague69:
High-power output as in the output of the amplifier, maybe 20VAC, about 30V peak. Harmless to toddlers, but easily fries the outputs of TVs and DVD players.

How can you possibly arrange a house so a toddler doesn't have access to power cables? Are all of your power points at ceiling level?

        • @Russ: I don't have a small child in the house. But I would probably limit the number of accessible rooms, gate the stairs and rooms accessible, I would put the plastic caps onto the power sockets?

Again, I don't have a toddler, there might be more that needs to be done.

I just thought that the cables will be in the same area as the power cables, like at the back of the cabinets.

Shorts of that power can cause sparks and lead to fires no?

          @plague69:

Shorts of that power can cause sparks and lead to fires no?

Extremely unlikely. You may get a tiny puff of smoke as an electronic component fails.

I work in electronics, and I've never seen a failure that resulted in fire with low voltage and low current (which this is). I've even had a PCB come back to me with a hole in it large enough to put my finger through - I was told it was in an industrial building that was struck by lightning. A bit of charring around the edges of the hole but no fire, because electronic components and PCBs all seem to have UL94V-0 ratings, a fire-resistance test.

For a spark, you generally need higher voltage. The breakdown voltage of air is about 3000V/mm, so the 30V (or thereabouts) from the Z337's amplifier could theoretically create a spark 1/100th of a millimetre long, too small to see or hear.

Apologies for the inconvenience, but this item is out of stock online.

  • Are there any cheap little speakers like this that deliver the bass through the left and right speaker, and does away with the subwoofer and proprietary cables entirely?

    • +10

You cannot produce useful bass with small enclosures at a small price.

However, if you question is changed to "are there any reasonably sized and priced speakers like this that deliver the bass through the left and right speaker, and does away with the subwoofer and proprietary cables entirely?" then the Voll A44 is a current favourite.

The A44 will not produce as low a bass as this Z337, but the bass it produces will be of a superior quality than the Z337. Later you can add the optional subwoofer Voll S6 if low bass becomes important to you.

      • With the Volls there might be less bass, but the overall sound quality will be much, much superior to these Logitechs with no mid and muddy bass.

    • +4

Why do you want to have the bass through two speakers? You won't get a stereo effect at low frequencies, humans can't tell what direction low-frequency sounds are coming from. That's why all stereos have only one sub, two won't improve the situation.

Also, the cables aren't proprietary, they're just RCA plugs and sockets. But if you want to extend the cable, you'll need an extension cable that has a male RCA on one end and a female RCA on the other end, those cables are uncommon, most cables with RCA connectors have male plugs on both ends. But you can buy RCA female-female adaptors, so team an adapter with a conventional RCA cable and it will work, sort of. Most RCA cables aren't designed for the power level speakers need, you may find the cables get warm.

If you have soldering skills, it's trivial to make up extension cables, Jaycar have all the parts you need. Use speaker wire instead of shielded cable though, and choose speaker wire that will just fit through the hole in the back of the RCA connectors.

      • Don't want clutter, and I want the low frequency pointed at my head instead of filling the room. Kind of like studio monitors is what I'm after, but smaller and more like $40 instead of $400.

        • +5

You can't "point" bass. For a frequency of say 100Hz, the wavelength is about 3.4 meters. As the speaker is physically much smaller than this, directionality is impossible. Your entire room will likely be somewhat resonant at this frequency, so effectively it's like you are inside the speaker box.

        • I don't mind if I miss a few hz on the very low end. Just as long as it has the low end it has built into the speakers instead of a seperate sub.

        • @AustriaBargain:
Smallish high-quality speakers are more expensive than this deal, I would expect $100 and higher for a good set of speakers. But then you'll usually need a separate amplifier, so you're back to clutter.

Soundbars have minimal clutter, but the sound quality isn't great on the cheaper varieties. There are some good soundbars with a wireless subwoofer, but they are about $350:
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/335541
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/319276

This deal is a remarkably good price for decent audio. I don't think you'll be able to come close with any other deal, unless you're willing to buy second-hand speakers.

        • I don't mind small active speakers, just as long a they aren't like those cheap 90s ones you used to see everywhere. I just want clear/flat sound with just a little bit of oomf for explosions and gun shots.

  • anyone confirm if theres any stock in vic?

  • Just did a quick postcode check and it appears that it's only available online for home delivery in QLD and NT

  • +2

Does Bigw have an online stock checker?

    • +1

I called a few of my local stores and they said to call this number - 1300 244 999. They can then check stores around you (or wherever) to see if they have any stock. Worked for me! Found two still in stock and have them set aside for me to pick up.
