I've been keeping an eye on the Mi Max 2 at GearBest, and this seems to be the cheapest offer by some distance that I've seen.

Edit: Possibly shave off another 1.5% or 3% with Cashrewards.

  • maybe rep can throw in a code for icing on top

  • great price! normally the 32GB model is about this price. when I was in china best price I could do in store was $330.

  • +2

it's a pretty good deal, I think the cheapest I've seen was US $161 during 11.11 sale (limited stock though) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/342094

    • +2

Yeah I got that price, $210 for Black one

      • +1

lucky you, I was looking for a tablet actually so I didnt buy it…it could be a good tablet replacement given the screen size and battery are pretty good. It's quite impossible to get a tablet with 4g around this price point though

        • +2

it could be a good tablet replacement

I don't think it is having owned a 6.4" phone and an 8" tablet - the difference in screen area is very large.

        • +2

@Diji1: Yep agreed, if you calculate screen area, 8" tablet is 52% bigger than 6.44" phablet, assuming both are 16:9 aspect ratio.
And compared to a 5.5" phone, the 8" tablet is 210% bigger in screen area.

        • But compared to a 5", 6.44" is 65% bigger in area.

      • Got one as well. Have you received it yet?

        • Yes I got one as well but wondering if anyone has received it yet? Mine showed despatched to AU 6 days ago and no further update

    • Now that's what I call a bargain!

    • How does this model compare with the Note 4X?

      • +1

        See below.

  • +4

This is a pretty perfect device for the price.

Large 6.44" screen (most phones are around 5-5.7")

4gb RAM (most phones have around 3gb RAM in this price range)
64gb internal storage (for this price it is pretty good)
    Type C fast charge 3.0
    Snapdragon 625
1920 x 1080 screen (this is probably the only minor small negative as no 1440p but this means better battery life as it requires less power to power less pixels)
    Infrared port
    Dual SIM
    No NFC
No B28 (probably also one of it's only drawbacks)
5300 mAh battery (most phones hover between 3000-4100 mAh)
Dual speakers in landscape mode (this is probably one of the most important since mono good speakers will always sound bad compared to stereo dual average speakers)
Fairly recent so still getting updates.

Overall a great phablet i.e. 2 in 1 phone and tablet.

Beats my current Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X any day.

    • +4

Beats my current Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X any day.

But.. The Mi Max 2 is bloody massive.

      • +7

        Yes and?

        ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

      • +2

Never had much issue with the size, only one pair of jeans it doesn't fit well in (can't sit with it in pocket with those jeans)

    • +2

Large 6.44" screen (most phones are around 5-5.7")

Whatever floats yer boat but I found 6.4" was too large as an average size bro.

      • Honestly it is a bit closer to under 6" is ideal for me.. But the extra battery life and the fact that I normally carry a bag with me wherever I go and Bluetooth earphones for calls and music helps justify lugging it around a bit for me.

I use the split screen sometimes so it has its uses.
No doubt 5.5" and smaller is more lightweight and portable compact than this monster 6.44" for carrying it in your hand or pocket.

        • But once you have 5.9 then after 6 months you'll want bigger.

        • @dragonindespair: maybe, maybe not. I have a 8.4" right now and I definitely don't want bigger and definitely not too small either.

For my tablet I think 7" is perfect size.

So the 6.44" seems perfect but since it means more towards a smart phone imho than a tablet 6" would be ideal I'd say but I'd have to try and see one in person.

But yeah started with a 10.1" which is monstrous and heavy. Now on a 8.4". Accidentally bought a 5.5" and now want a 6.44" unless a 6" variant arrives.

This would be for calls, texting, instant messaging, general web browsing, GPS finding directions and light gaming and maybe some video watching on WiFi or pre downloaded.

Additionally, I think if I were to get a Windows tablet for Xbox and PC game streaming under 7" would be ideal or there around abouts.

The Nintendo switch screen is 6.2" diagonal for good measure but the overall device is larger with the joy cons attached. (I don't own a switch but Nintendo usually gets these kind of things right and it is now the common universal standard too somewhat think Nintendo DS, future predictions and developments will most certainly be somewhat roughly based off of this new handheld experience now)

        • +1

@AlienC: yeah have to stop at some point maybe 8" is too much to be a phone. mine is now 6" - i use my phone 55% movies 20% games 20% browse 3% calls 2% sms and i feel i still want bigger screen.
but with blutooth headphone and smartwatch i dont want to carry phone AND tablet around.

        • @dragonindespair: true true. I had this notion before and still haven't solved this problem that's why I was hoping that this Mi Max 2 might be able to be the saviour to all my too many devices problems..

But my tablet will still outperform my Mi Max 2 if I get one so it's hard to decide.

      • Whether it's 6" or 8"… Really comes down to how thick it is and how long it lasts.

        • you mean technique better than size ?
hmm need to get someone else opinion on that!

        • -1

@dragonindespair: I was referring to the battery life. Not sure what you are on about.

    • +5

I love this phone. Honestly, I'm happy with the resolution - everything looks very sharp and great, without having that battery drain for debatable visual quality of higher res.

I'm with Vaya, using Optus. Despite no band 28, I get 4gx here in Brisbane, and often 4g at my parents in remote Victoria (some spots in gippsland, otherwise typical Optus yeah reception)

My biggest issue is the lack of NFC. It's not a huge deal, but it's something that honestly should be here.
Only other issue is that I owned the Max 1 before this, and really miss the color changeable notification light.

Battery is simply amazing. Flew to China, watched 10 hours of movies, and only drained 40% - used Bluetooth headphones the entire time too.

      • That is amazing. Yeah the no NFC is a bummer but for me personally for now since it is still quite new and vulnerable to attacks I still see it as a good safety precaution or safety measure not to have it.

But to each their own. It would have been nice to experiment with some NFC home automation or tags and android pay.. maybe my next phone after this.

        • Not sure I care for Android pay, and honestly, despite having NFC on past phones I don't recall ever using it or even wanting to use it.

But now that I don't have it, I want it. I want to get some tags and make stuff potentially happen… Though I guess my Google home should do those things.

Meh I guess. Still the best phone I've ever had.. though I have a soft spot for my Max 1.

        • @Salmando: the max 1 was definitely a game changer I think it was the first decently priced phone in this phablet space that I can remember. There were others but more expensive. This is the cheapest afaik and from a reputable Chinese brand.

Yeah as for NFC I can only think of maybe somehow linking my Opal card to it and maybe having it control some light switches or randomly turn music on but other than that I don't have any use for much home automation (more home renovation at this point and diy repairs) and can't think of any cool or good uses atm.

        • @AlienC:
Amex sometimes has Android pay offers. Always feel bummed out missing out on those lol

        • @Jared17: haha yeah same. I always get bummed over great amex offers since I can't get one atm

    • Was thinking of getting this for NFC and bigger storage after hesitating on Redmi Note 4X. But just realize it doesn't have NFC too. Darn.

Aside from the larger screen, does it have any other advantages over Redmi Note 4X like speed or battery life or camera?

Is good to go after taking out from the box or you need to flash it or something? I dun know a PC so that might be an issue.

      Thanks

      • +1

Mi Max 2 advantages over Redmi Note 4X are as follows:

        From https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?&idPhone2=8582&idPhone1=8580#global,,

        • extra LTE Band 8 and GSM 850 on the Mi Max 2 which translates to better coverage and more access to cell towers (I forgot which carrier though I think Telstra, you can Google the carrier band for Australia and compare or check the one on gearbest site)
        • Speed should be the same however they have the same specs and guts powering their different sized screens so you could argue the Redmi Note 4X should run faster since it has fewer pixels to power with the same gpu and cpu Adreno 506 / Snapdragon 625
        • both have 4gb ram
        • larger screen 5.5" vs 6.44" on the Mi Max 2
        • larger battery 4100 mAh vs 5300 mAh on the Mi Max 2
        • faster charging on the Mi Max 2 because it has quick charge 3.0 and type-C 1.0 reversible connector vs Redmi Note 4X "current normal standard" charging and microUSB 2.0
        • camera is camera I'm honestly not sure how to judge this but afaik they are pretty close, I think the Note 4X has a slightly bigger lead in camera megapixels and f number but the Mi Max 2 can shoot video in 4k30fps so I dunno might have to do your own research on that one, truthfully my weakness has always been judging between budget to midrange cameras, high end cameras are more reviewed and critiqued further I feel
        • and as far as WiFi goes I believe the Mi Max 2 wins again with WiFi ac compared to Redmi Note 4X's only up to WiFi n (ac is the current standard fastest, n is still pretty good but ac has more throughout and I believe range but don't quote me on that one)

So yeah if you can get over the extra size in your pocket or bag and weight (roughly 50g) the Mi Max 2 completely blows the Redmi Note 4X out of the water unless 3rd party development favours the Redmi Note 4X over the Mi Max 2 in future.

  • What's the difference between international version and global version?

    • Probably the ROM and available locales/languages.

  • i just bought one. paid 253. for.this price is very good. use it as phablet

  • How's the camera?

Which Xiaomi phone has the best camera these days? It can be difficult to keep up with.

My redemi note 3 still going strong but I really could use an upgrade.

    • +1

The mid range Xiaomi cameras are great in good light - I actually really like their colour rendering. But in low light they really struggle. The Mi5/Mi5X/Mi6 still have the best cameras, though still a step behind flagship Samsung, Apple, HTC etc.

I'd say it would only be a small upgrade from a Note 3 - don't get it just for the camera upgrade

    • dont think it really matters nowadays. IMHO phone camera technology is probably near or at its peak already. Most will do brilliantly in daylight but crap in low light. Even the high end ones also dont fare so well in darker conditions.

I'm holding out for a deal on the A1.

      • True, but the duel cameras on the mi 6 is a massive step up from what your stating… Some of the portrait shots are much more SLR comparable

        • lol dual cameras are just a cheap trick. You can get the same crisp potrait and background blur with a normal camera and post processing with photoshop or other image app. When you talk SLR standards its all about the lens, and you cant have that standard without an expensive big ass lens.

        • @KangaBanga:

Nah don't agree - from what i've seen it's not that 'crisp' and clearly fabricated… I have a 50mm lens on my SLR and of course a phone is never going to be as good, but the Mi 6 is what I said 'comparable' … just my thoughts anyway!

        • +1

@urbancartel: read this a good discussion on mobile phone cameras and dual cameras
          https://www.theverge.com/2017/8/1/16074480/dual-camera-phone…

Just gimmick IMHO. For any serious photography, you gotta have a good big lens and access to the RAW format to do post processing. You will also need a big flash for anything thats not well lit.

So there really, there is not much phones can improve on nowadays with their tiny lenses.

otherwise if you are just gonna do selfies/pictures of dogs/pictures of cats/ pictures of baby or snap pics for food porn and share them on facebook/instagram/etc.. no one is gonna notice if you are using a S6 S7 S8 or iphone 5/6/7. Apps like facebook resize your pics when you share anyways.

        • @KangaBanga: Food? Porn? Por que no los dos?

        • @urbancartel:

Agree, the leica dual lens initiative with the huawei p9 and p10 (and esp. p10 plus) series do actually take amazing photos with great natural bokeh. Just waiting to see what p11 brings.

      • dont think it really matters nowadays. IMHO phone camera technology is probably near or at its peak already.

Well you can objectively show that this is untrue and cameras on higher end flagships are generally significantly better than those lower down the price totem.

      • The Redmi Note 5 is rumoured to be released soon… but honestly, the Note 3 is actually still a really good phone. Benchmarks still place this phone above other phones in this price range, even newer models. I haven't found a phone that can replace my Redmi Note 3 in terms of value for money.

The A1 is pure Android, sure, but I actually like some of the Xiaomi apps, and the interface.

    • As others said, not great. In very bright light, it's very good, but low light is horrible.
At standard lighting, it's pretty average. Better than the Max 1, but overall I would day the camera is the phones biggest weakness.

I'm going to try a modified version of Google's camera app and see if the processing helps much.

  • Like the look of the Mi 6 - duel 12mp rear cameras

EDIT - Sorry was in reply to above post!

    • +9

why cant the cameras just get along

      • Woops! Dual…haha actually made the mistake twice too…

  • Bought one $249;-)

  • Looks like a downgrade from mi max in WiFi (AC Vs b/g/n only) and camera (16mp Vs 12mp only)

    • Camera is different and so is the chip but WiFi I think is the same.

      https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8057&idPhone2=8582#global,,

  • Would buy in a heartbeat if I wasn't limited to this gross washed out gold color.

  • First time buy from gearbest. I need to provide my passport number ? They ask for it at thr chrck out

    • Never had to.

      • i dont know why too. i click buy then it go to another page where i fill out address and name then down below, it ask me for passport name and number.
        kinda shocking.

anyway then i click cancel and refresh tried again, and it work fine. bought one with DHL . hopefully i can it fast

  • I have the Mi Max 1 and absolutely love it. The screen is huge, it is fast and the battery lasts me 2 days easy.

Any benefit going to the Mi Max 2?

    • +1

      it's even faster.

    • +1

Used Max 1 for 10 months and sold last month while I bought Max 2 from GB.
For battery, Max 2 is much better
Built quality,Max 2 is way better, feel solid and premium while 1 feel cheaper as top and bottom are plastic.
Camera is slightly better on Max 2.
I'm not playing game so can't comment on CPU.
So I definitely reckon to Max 2,
      (I sold $230 for 1, and bought $280 for 2,bought another 2 for $210 for family),

      • Don't forget that extra gigabyte of ram.. for me this was the biggest game changer maybe besides the change in charging techniques.

  • Does anyone here know xiaomi phone get hot when you on youtube or music for hours? Thanks.
I have a work college he has Oppo, phone never hot like Samsung or Apple.

    • I don't have the Xiaomi that we're talking about in this list, I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X (Mediatek, not Snapdragon, no flash or root).
It does get hot when it is being charged and when using the GPS. So when I'm driving, if I use both (GPS while charging), it gets very hot. It does not cool down easily if if it's a hot day and I turn it off as soon as I can go cool it down.
Watching you tube etc, it does gets warm. When it does, I force close other apps using a cleaning app. That makes a big difference.
It does run warmer than any other phone I've had. I really do enjoy using this phone though .

      I hope that helps.

  • +1

Just wish there was a phone under $350 that took realy great photos - especially in poor light and of kids running around…

    • The Oppo F1s was the best for that. Bot sure if currently Oppo has an equivalent but oppo cameras definately better than Xiomi.

  • On one hand, I want a phone with a large screen.

On the other, half the reason I want a phone on a large screen is because I want to use it to play games. 625 is kinda a bummer.

  • +1

I had the original Mi Max, bought one on lasy year's Xmas special on Ali.

it fared well, but created problems.
    - took a while to develop a set of special skills to operate the damn thing safely with 1 hand
    - I had to stop wearing a few pairs of jeans just because this damn thing won't fit in any pocket
    - Bluetooth performance was very average, which is kind of a bummer, because listening to music was a pain
    - finally one day I got it out of my pocket to find it quite bent, that was the last drop.

otherwise it was fun, the screen was great, and no complaints about performance.

sold it without loss, so happy ending anyway. now I am back on 5.2 inch phone, and all is good.

    • Wish somebody made a decent 6" in this range 6.44" for me is a bit on the large side of things.

What is the difference between the HK WAREHOUSE and GLOBAL versions?

    • I'd like to know this as well..
      Anyone…?

Also, I wonder if/when this might even get lower in price. I'm very patient..

      • I found a comparison video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1dbOeSnhXs

        • Thanks chook, that was helpful.
          So it's mainly languages.

        • +1

It looks that way, the white/gold version only comes with english/chinese on it but it looks like you can install the global rom if you want to. In the comments section the reviewer said that he kept the white/gold version as it also had a better screen.

    • +1

International version vs global version. The difference is basically just the power plug.

    • What's LEET?

    • How could I not know what LEET is!?

      I don't think it's this:
Leet (or "1337"), also known as eleet or leetspeak, is an alternative alphabet for many languages that is used primarily on the Internet. It uses some characters to replace others in ways that play on the similarity of their glyphs via reflection or other resemblance.

I bought a mi max 2 from eBay in the 20% sales for 308 shipped from Sydney so this is a good deal. Really impressed with this device at the end of a normal day of use I have 78% battery where my iPhone 6 plus would be down to 35% approx. 1080p screen always looks great no pixels visible.
Also got miui 9 as soon as I booted it. Mine is the global version so had Google play preinstalled. Great phone and great price

  • Anybody wanna swap for a 5.5" Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X 4gb RAM 64gb Black

Still in plastic packaging and box and everything just prefer a Xiaomi Mi Max 2.

  • Any gearbest reps wanna hit me up with a code for one of these in black @ the price of the previous deal mentioned at the top of this thread (around $210 aud) please? 😉

  • As above please. Really want to buy one.

  • May get a couple lol.

  • Kind of wish I'd read up about slow gearbest shipping - ordered mi max 2 on nov 30, paid extra for DHL expedited shipping and it hasn't been picked up yet. Need it before going away on holidays soon :(

    • That's weird, mine only took 7 business days around with DHL as well

  • Has anyone received this phone via singpost?
If so, what date did you order and when did you receive?

    • Ordered 15/11 Arrived in AU 29/11 Delivered 6/12

      • Thanks for the info.
So I'm still stuck on the despatched to overseas tracking entry, hope it makes it here someday.

        • Mine was despatched to overseas on 25/11

        • Any word on yours, Trav? Mine is now stuck on the same tracking entry - fingers are crossed!

For anyone watching this thread - I asked the gearbest rep for a code and this price is back on! 10 more phones (well 9, as I got one) at $189.99 US.
