That's very expensive for a smoke detector.

    How is it a bargain?

It comes with a Google home mini

    It doubles as night light

    • Pathway light is very dull, so if you have high ceilings its not great. Otherwise i love mine, had it for a few years now.

It will explain to you ,
    why it's beeping/flashing ,

also the meaning of life ,the universe and everything.

    • And if you have a few, it tells you which room has set off the alarm. It announces the alarm on all Nest Protects in the house.

What's with the review comment ??

I called the electrician who came the next day. Upon inspection he refused to install it as the power wire in non compliant, the reason it is not double insulated. I took his word for it and returned it to the store, the guy behind the counter was aware of the non compliance and stated "I don't know why we sell them" and shook his head.

    So worthless here?

I ordered the Wired version, so I'll report back - but according to the SMH:

while the smoke alarm is double-insulated to reduce the risk of shock, the supplied power cable is not. This means to meet Australian safety standards the Nest should be installed with a junction box in the ceiling (not included in the box) which covers the supplied power cable – including where it connects to the mains power and to the Nest.

If you're worried about this, and want the Nest, there's always the Battery version that doesn't need to be hard wired. I"m going to suck it and see with my sparky.

Cool… But in VIC (Don't know about NSW)

Residential homes constructed before 1st August 1997 need only 9 volt battery powered smoke alarms installed. Residential homes constructed after 1st August 1997 must have smoke alarms connected to 240 volt mains power. In addition a backup battery must be installed in the smoke alarm.

So unless you are in a really old house and replacing existing hardwired smoke alarm - battery-only smoke alarm are illegal here.. I am genuinely interested in the product but concerned with the reports of non-compliance..

Wait so this connects to a smartphone? Do we live at a time where our smoke/CO detectors go off so often that we need to receive a notification on our phone or have the ability to silence the detector from there.

Also, according to the review on JB's website, the wired version is not double insulated and thus doesn't conform to standards – and apparently electricians will refuse to install it. All yours for the low, low price of $189.

That extra alert can probably save someone. They also link together so bedroom will alert when kitchen is on fire, where normal ones will have to wait for smoke to come up stairs to bedrooms

      • Don't know if I'd trust my router to be running if my house is on fire. Does it work if the router is toasted (literally)? I'd hope these have some other type of connectivity other than relying on a home router (which would be off in a power blackout) but then again, I don't see how they'd notify a mobile device in that case.

        • No, Wi-Fi only. No simcard.

        • They should still communicate with each other over wifi channels similar to sonos

The Xiaomi smoke detector would do the same thing as this right? I might order one of those.

    • +1

Xiaomi smoke detector has additional features, which include, a built-in microphone which spies on you, other than that same as Nest.

This is a ridiculous price for a smoke detector.

Just an FYI, the mains connected Nest Protect is non-compliant in AUS as the wiring is not double insulated.

    • According to the iSelect who are also selling this device, it conforms to Australian Standards.

      "Certifications:
      * Australian Standard (AS) 3786:2014, Certificate No: SMK40713
      * EN-14604 – Smoke alarm devices
      * EN-50291 – Electrical apparatus for the detection of carbon monoxide in domestic premises

      Disclaimer:
Voice messages do not comply with AS 3786:2014, Section 4.21
When Interconnected, visual indicators do not comply with the requirement of AS 3786:2014."

In fact, they are also have an ad-on offering which includes an electrician to install it.

So if the product that JB is selling is the same one as iSelect (ie it matches the identical product number that is included in the certification) then this deal would seem to be worth considering.
