How is it compared to ESET? Anyone?

    • +1
    • I've used Eset for years and still rank it up there.
Cheers OP, will try F-Secure on a spare PC.

    • Fatsecurity an aggregated test score comparison website shows that based of average scoring ESET is ranked #10/#32 and F-Secure is ranked #29/#32.

Please note that individual breakdown analysis shows that F-Secure offers the best Protection #1/#32. However, it ultimately suffers from False positives #32/#32.

Best free Antivirus according to the website is Avira ranked #2/#32.

This stated best protection (besides common sense) is usually a range of products and not a single suite.

Personally, my favourite programs are shadow defender, winja virustotal, and any strong HIPS program.

    • ESET FTW!!

    Thank u TA.

Try Sophos home (https://home.sophos.com) guys, free forever up to 10 pcs/macs. Compares well with ESET etc, enterprise level.

    • Just doesn't compare to Sophos enterprise/business level products.

      • +1

maybe I should've said "It uses the same award-winning technology that IT professionals trust to protect their businesses." :)

  • Thanks tightarse

  • thanks tight tt

  • +1

dont trust it. name sounds eerily similar to f-society

    • +6

This company has been around since the DOS days. Pretty trustworthy. Haven't had a chance to watch Mr Robot yet, unfortunately.

      • -2

Ninja edit there haha. It's garbage don't watch it

  • How does it compare to Trend Micro?

    • +7

      Surely anything is better?

      • This is free, and free is good :)

  • Memory requirements
    1GB or more
    Disk space
    1.2GB free disk space
Internet connection to validate your subscription and receive updates. ARM based tablets are not supported. The system must fulfill Windows minimum requirements as specified by Microsoft.

    Thanks TA.

Anytime know why it says this when logged into the site:
'Your subscription is valid until 02/12/2018.' and not 12 months?

    • +1

      Wut

    • That is twelve months. Mine only gave one.

      • Yup worked fine for me, misread, thank you.

    • 'Murica!

  • AU link says $120. Has it expired?

    new accounts only?

    • +1

      Set up a new one

    • Yep, I logged in to my F-Secure account (I use Freedome VPN) and I'm asked to pay. No freebies.

      New accounts only it seems?

  • +1

    Like the new picture TA

  • On mobile & still showing as full price in the cart. Anything i’m doing wrong?

  • Read somewhere that nowadays standalone antivirus is redundant. Any truth of that?

    • Some yes. Personally i just use Windows defender. Safe practices are still the best way; avoid opening random attachments from emails, use a good/patched browser, don't have java browser plug ins installed, and don't go to dodgy sites, and don't* torrent of course, and possibly use a filtered DNS server.

For 'mum and dad' users i MAY still recommend an AV i think, but it's 50/50, at best.

We have found ransomware to be the main/only threat to our systems at work which would pass all our firewalls and AVs including eset and trend. Malwarebytes 3.0 was the only application that could detect and stop the attacks (which happened multiple times over the last two years). But most of the big AVs now incorporate some form of RW detection. I'd love to see some tests on them all. To answer your question, I don't think so but same still applies, use backup strategies.

    • I don't agree with these statements at all. Yes, AV may miss many modern threats, but will still detect and prevent many others. Given there are so many free options out there, it makes sense to have an AV product. Windows Defender is built in and free, so not really standalone, but will do the job if you don't want a "standalone" AV.

I was using Kaspersky, going to give this a try.
It is really light weight compared to other AV's. Check out the performance test.

    • Looks good except it had the highest false positives.

      • Lol yep. Every other AV has maybe 1-5. This AV has like 30….

  • Nice, does it have to be activated now?
I still have 12 months left on my current Kaspersky license?

  • seems to have expired. asking for payment

    • Worked fine for me. Just registered an account and got the 12 months.

  • Been using FSecure for years. Faultless. Hold no fears.

  • Thanks great timing 👍🏻
My Mcafee subscription ran out Friday.

  • its its only 1 year i may as well not get it :/

gosh why am i so negative

  • thanks tightass :D

  • Been using free Avast for a long time - no issues and ads infrequent so certainly nice… but why not try F-Secure for free and 0 ads… signed up, worked as expected, and installing now.
    Thanks TightAss.

Ahh, F Secure.. Used to have this as our corporate AV back in Win XP days. It worked well, by crushing every CPU into oblivion. A virus can't do sh!t if there's no free CPU cycles, after all. I wonder how they've changed.

    • However, back in the Win XP days all we had were single core Athlons and Pentiums, nowadays most PC's should have at least 2c/2t or 4C/4T which gives it a lot more leeway with those CPU resources.

    • +1

Interesting you say this… I just installed and now uninstalling… just using the router interface was notably slower after installing F-Secure… I turned F-Secure features off and bang, router interface fast again…. uninstalling and going back to Avast free.

      • +1

        get bitdefender

      • Good to see some things never change eh.

@Scrimshaw - this was late in the XP time.. 2005-2007 era. This included the start of the Core series. Even they were brought to their knees when the daily full system scan kicked off!

  • Anyone tried their Android app? Is it very resource hunger and battery life consuming?

  • Since it is free. take it or (profanity) off.

    • Yeah I got the free antivirus to have a look but I think I'd also like the option of uninstalling it.

    • +1

Those files belong to DeepGuard which provides HIPS protection. What exactly has F-Secure done to your VPN? Is it asking whether you want to allow or block the application? If so it probably doesn't recoqnise the application and has flagged it, which is default behaviour.

      • Its allowing it through, but I have to restart now to see if my Revo uninstaller got rid of FSecure.

        • +1

Could have just turned DeepGuard off or changed its settings if that was the case. Hopefully you let F-Secure's installer run before cleaning it out with Revo ;)

  • +2

    Windows Defender is free :)

Or just spend like $2000 on a mac and save on antivirus haha
    /s

Why would you bother creating a virus when you can just log in as root? :D

  • Appears to be a promotion through Virgin Mobile UK, will they honor their promotion to non-virgin mobile members?
I know when ESET ran the 12 month licence promotion through PC Tech they ended up deleting almost all of the free licences and required manual verification to see if you were really a PC Tech subscriber (I registered for 1 licence and it was deleted a few days later, when I messaged them they asked for my PC Tech subscriber ID to reactivate the key)
