  • Where is the store? Which city?

    • Would be nice to see "Parramatta" in the title so everyone knows where it applies to.

For the tech savvy, this is a good (cheap) way to try out DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index). It's essentially a firmware upgrade that allows a lot more functionality to be obtained from a router. It's kind of difficult to upgrade it but the results are awesome :)

Here's a guide on how to flash DD-WRT on to this particular model

You mean for the "tech unsavvy" because most techies already know about DD-WRT :)

    • out2kyl- Thanks for the links- they helped me understand what its all about

    • That WRT54G2 router is a cut down version running vxworks firmware, so you can only install "micro" builds of WRT-DD. That also means that the flash procedure is significantly more complex (and prone to bricking if you make a mistake) than for more "full-featured" routers out there (that you just reflash in one step, and away you go)

      • as you say only "micro" build can be installed, is there a much difference in Options between a "micro" and "normal" install?
I have been waiting to try WRT-DD but could not afford new router. Kinda waiting for a deal like this.

        Thanks in advance.

      • Yeah I second this. I don't have the micro version but am running full version. The router never needs a reboot… in fact it reboots only after a power outage. Fantastic stability.

      Actually, go to http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database
and type wrt54g2. You will come up with 5 routers-

Manufacturer Model Revision Supported Activation required
      Linksys WRT54G2 1.0 yes no
      Linksys WRT54G2 1.1 yes no
      Linksys WRT54G2 1.3 yes no
Linksys WRT54G2 1.5 not possible no
      Linksys WRT54GS2 1.0 yes no

Please find out the revision before buying if you want to run DD-WRT.
I have been running DD-WRT for over two and a half years to use a router in bridge mode, and it works like a charm.

      • I got one from them and its Revision 1.0.01

  • How do you get the WRT310N?

It's showing up as ~$170 incl. shipping on their website.

    http://www.wireless1.com.au/Home-Networking/Modems-Wireless-…

Or is this only on the 28th?

  • Avoid, website crashing on payment, payment has gone through twice from credit card but no order in my account.

    • Website problem is fixed now I spent half an hour with their web admin and another 15 with their accounts department. Hope I didn't get charged thrice waiting for charges to appear on card.

      • Yes I did get charged three times, Account department has promised to refund other two charges.

So could I buy one of these Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Router, install WRT-DD on it and then use it as my XBOX 360 wireless network connected rather then buying the offical XBOX 360 one?

    • Yes that would work. Way cheaper than the official xbox360 one.

    • The original one is n this router is only g this was discussed in the madcatz still good if you are not planning to stream hd video. The madcatz were n as well.

  • So is the WRT310N a good N router?
I will be using it to stream HD to PS3…

    Thanks

    • Dude, PS3 can stream video wirelessly.
But HD is very difficult to stream, even for N router.

  • So this WRT54G2 will be ok to play online games even tho its a G and not a N?

Wont be streaming HD movies, but maybe some dvd rips the size of 1300meg

Anyone tried doing a price match a Harvey Norman as I am in QLD :(

  • I could not find that promotion link on their website.
was it only published through emails?
does any one knows how I can get to that promotions link from their website?
