  • It this locked to Telstra?

    • Yes I believe it would be

    • I bought it 2 weeks ago. Just got a chance to unlock it, but my one says it's unlocked…..

      • How cpuld i check mine ?

        • Use DC-Unlocker from here

Ignore my previous comment. It showed as unlocked but showed as locked when inserted another sim. I therefore unlocked my WIFI stick by following the instructions above. The stick works fine with all sims now.

Can unlock for free using some tutorials online

    • Does this take SIM card or it is CDMA?

      • +1

        Takes sim

      • It comes with a SIM card.

    • Any link to them please? I tried google searching but was seeing mixed results.

        • Awesome, thanks finbar!

        • Can't I please just pay $2 on ebay for an unlock code like my other devices?

        • Just a heads up, if you want to flash the stock WebUI (without the Telstra branding and with signal information) afterwards, please generate an OEM code and write it down somewhere before doing the NCK unlock. You can find a link to the stock WebUI in the first set of replies.

I can't edit my post anymore to include that. :) And yes, the process may seem a bit overwhelming if you're not too tech savvy, but hey, it's free. You always have the option to purchase an unlock code if you'd rather do that instead.

        • Download link in Step 3 of original instructions are missing.
          Anyone have a copy?

        • @Draxxx: It's linked in my 3rd step "(if you missed it, it's here)".

        • @master131:
          Thanks!

        • i haven’t seen a cheap eg $2 one step unlock on ebay for these.

also some of the software needed is it supported on windows 10 and if you need to disable certicate signing on windows 10 know when i loaded some software into windows 10 i had to disable certicate checks as the software wasn’t signed, was for reflashing android tv boxes.

        • Seem to have stuffed mine. All went well (except hadn't gotten the OEM unlock code first) until the last step and it couldn't detect the device to reflash it.

Can't get firmware recovery mode to work either by shorting the pin. It sort of shows up as a Huawei 3G PC UI interface but then seems to completely stuff the USB system/drivers/hub. Unplugging it and it doesn't disappear for example. Windows won't shut down.

Might grab another but any ideas?

        • @Shonky:

It seems that the instructions don't work for these batch of modems. My instructions were from earlier this year and I haven't obtained these ones from Harvey Norman (none in stock around me). They could have changed something important which is bricking the devices because there were no reports of this around the time I posted the instructions.

        • Hey @master131: Will you give this batch another crack at unlocking? Haven't been able to find instructions anywhere. Cheers and thanks for you!

      • Has anyone confirmed a successful unlock of this modem yet?

    • +2

I bricked one trying to unlock it, it's quite a complicated process

      • me too

        • Me +1, the lights stopped flashing

        • @chino8826:
          Yeah me too..
Lights stopped, still detected on insert, but no port found, so can't flash or read.

        • @Draxxx:
Wish I read this before attempting to unlock it last night. Did you guys manage to find a way to unbrick it?

        • @takamine:
          Nope. Dead.

        • which step bricked it? The firmware downgrade?

      • Which part did you guys brick on? Downgrade?

    • Could you show us a link to the tutorial? I cannot find one with Google.
      Many thanks.

      • +1

lol I once saw one on you tube, how to unlock Huawei Wifi 4G dongle and I was so excited and then the man on the video said so now you enter the unlock code. There you have it, completely unlock!
But he did not tell viewers how to get the unlock code, he just say now you enter the unlock code and then he said "how easy was that"

        what an idiot

  • Nice, can replace my Optus one that no longer works on Telstra B28

  • +1

Can you simply use power from your car and use this as a wifi only device in the car ?
Without needing in plugged into a laptop?

    • Yep, I use mine for exactly that as a wifi hotspot for my headunit.

Cheers OP, ordered another as a spare in case my current one dies!

  • I've got a unlock code but HOW do you actually unlock these?

    • I believe you need to put a different sim into it and then go to the web interface in which it will let you put the unlock code in

    • +5

pop in SIM from non-Telstra operator. Log into the device web interface, it will ask for unlock code.

do you mind to share with us how you got your unlock code?

        • Although I appreciate the efforts of that poster, I don't have oodles of spare time. If someone has somewhere to get cheap unlock codes, I'm all ears.

        • @vjknight:

Have you tried that yourself and confirm it works?
          Many thanks.

        • I tried using this procedure and got stuck at the final stage. DC unlocker showed that the modem is unlocked. I could not flash the latest firmware now as the modem is not detected.

        • thanks might try one of their codes it’s only $1.20 and imhave a few of these telstra modems now …. buy them for the data allowance that they come with and use over school holidays usually so no chance of stuck with the $10 per gb auto data top up which is why i bought another one from HN.

        • @garage sale:
Can you please update us after you tried out those codes?

          Thanks :)

        • @ausdday: Just tried but was given a refund "Huawei E8372H is not supported model only Huawei E8372 is supported."

        • Same just got refund from ebay code seller …does 8372 not 8372h

        • @gratefulforsavings:

Did ufind another code? Or this device can not be unlock without following the free unlocker step?

        • haven’t tried another code seller yet

        • @LoveBargain15: I couldn't find another code. I'm tempted to follow the unlock procedure but am reluctant to lose the Telstra firmware.

  • Got one of these from Coles few days back, neat little device. Works on power banks.

  • can I use it as a mobile modem or it's just a wifi usb?

    • +3

both, can be used in a USB connection and directly connected to USB or used as a wifi device up to 5 devices.

  • +1

Does it have a battery or external power only?

  • +1

Anyone have the model number, google fu failed. I need to find if it is compatible with my RT-AC68U

    • +1

      Huawei E8372

      Exact Variant: E8372h-608

    • Did you find out if it's compatible?

      • +1

Sort of, whirlpool says it will work, but I am not sure if I can turn off the wifi. wating for a chance to go buy one

        • Keep me updated. Please and thank you.

  • Thanks. Bought one

  • Decent price, will buy one for sure

  • What is this device?
I need a device that produces 4G internet Hot-Spot with the SIM card I have. What device I should have (any other device than a phone?)?

    • +1

this, provided you have a Telstra sim card (not Optus or Voda)

      • Do you know any other similar device that works with other SIM cards?

      • can you not just unlock the device…. then you could use any sim and produce a hot-spot

        • +1

No, each network runs on different LTE frequencies so you need a device to match for optimal speeds (even if unlocked)

        • @bdl:

the last telstra dongle i had once unlocked in metropolitan areas worked well with amaysim. not as great as telstra which i used while remote FIFO, but still.. i would think this dongle would have similarly quite a fair few frequencies that would work too once unlocked?? correct me if wrong?

        • @SaberX: There's a few frequencies that are common however the "cream" of each network is only obtained by using the relevant carriers' hardware (they've done this by design, of course :( ).

        • @bdl:

fair enough. might not bother trying to accumulate another thing int he drawer then in that case.

        • @SaberX: To be honest, if you want to accumulate, this one is a good price and works on Telstra (and those who use its network such as Aldimobile), so a good one for the drawer. And $9! :) Grab one of these, the Optus equivalent, and the Vodafone Huawei R216 and you have every network covered! :)

  • How to use it with other sims if I don’t have A windows to jailbreak it?

  • +1

For those that have one, can you NAT port forward to devices on the Wifi? (yes I have a static and routable IP)

  • Looks like its compatible with my backup 4G router, hopefully will give better performance than my ancient Sierra AirCard 320U. Thanks.

  • I would presume it is compatible with the extra SIM cards for Telstra plans? Do they still offer free data only sims linked to an existing plan?

    • Curious to know the answer to this as well

    • I have 3 data share SIMs, im planning on using one of them in this device. Cant see any reason why it wouldn't work.

    • I can definitely confirm it works with the $5 telstra postpaid sim that shares your normal data from your phone plan. Any Telstra SIM should theoretically work.

I have mine plugged into an arcade machine that needs internet access.
It powers up when the arcade machine turns on and automatically creates a wifi hotspot for it to connect to.

Great bit of kit for $9.

Purchased mine from Kmart for $14 3 weeks ago.

      • Is there a guide on how we can use the post-paid sim on this device?

    • no now they charge $5 per data sharing sim per month …. optus is still free…. it’s one of the reason the i’m still with optus and not telstra…. when telstra does free data sharing sims i might switch to them.

      • Optus is only free for people who already have the data share sims. They stopped doing it for anyone else over a year ago and you have to buy another data sim at $10 or $15/m now

      • Boo :(

Oh well, hotspot in the car to continue then.
