    LOL that company name

    • guess its what you say when you try to set them up and the instructions are in Chinese… LOL

    • +1

      It's a funny name. :)

The guy who invented it wanted his Son to off his device and therefore it is called SONOFF.

      Sounds like SONOS to me.

      • +3

I missed out!! SONOFF A BEECH!

    • they called shotgun

  • +4

If you're willing to cut some cords, the Sonoff basic is a lot cheaper and can be had for about $6 each. But it requires cutting a cord on an extension cable or power board and connecting the positive and negative wires. I think the Sonoff basic also doesn't have power monitoring but this one does.

    • +1

Umm yeah I don't think I would want to do that :)

    • +27

      pro: save money
      con: might die

    • Doesn't sound hard and might actually be safer than one of these monstrous blocks which undoubtedly does not stay connected easily. Especially with a Chinese plug which has thinner pins than Australian ones. Problem is of course legality & insurance.

    • -2

"connecting the positive and negative wires". You clearly don't know what you're doing, so probably shouldn't be giving advice to others. The earth doesn't do anything, right?

      • The basic does not have an earth. Just active and neutral. There are also alternate firmwares available

        • +1

That's not to say that all electrical equipment is without an earth. The bargain features an earth pin; this suggestion is not comparative, and downright dangerous.

In addition, users should be aware that any fault caused by either of the two devices likely won't be covered by insurance in Australia, as I see no approval for use here.
Both 2000 and 2200W are listed in the description, neither meaning the device is capable of carrying a full 10A load in Aus as claimed.

        • @kongkurr:

"Downright dangerous" haha what year is this? Go check how many of your lightbulbs are grounded so you can have a panic attack.

Also, the HRS3FN is most definitely able to carry 10A http://en.hke.cn/bg_attach/2017/12/413.pdf

        • @ausmechkeyboards:

The comment that @kongkurr was responding to was suggesting the Sonoff Basic as an alternative to the S20. The Sonoff Basic doesn't have an earth, and indeed the Sonoff Basic is probably a pretty good choice for lights. However, if you're wiring a Sonoff Basic into an extension lead and not feeding the earth past so it is still correctly connected, then you probably shouldn't be doing your own wiring.

      • No, it doesn't.

The Sonoff basic doesn't even give you an opportunity to ground it, just live and neutral. You have to bypass around the entire device if you want to connect earth.

It's not 1931. You make it sound like whatever it's going to be connected to won't have a fuse or circuit breaker and that your own house's circuitry is just a car battery with some jumper cables.

This thing won't catch on fire, relax.

        • If it is put in an extension cable, the earch wire can be run through the middle of the device, uncut. Likely the device on the end is double insulated anyway.

    • the fact you used the words "positive" and "negative" wires concerns me.

      • It's actually great for walking people into electronics who think they'll kill themselves by cutting a wire. They always remember "positive" (live) pushes current and "negative" (neutral) draws it out, completing the circuit.

Even using the word "neutral" becomes confusing when you consider the fact that neutral is actually ground within the electrical grid, so there's no point in getting caught up with the nomenclature.

  • Do you know, Google Home support or just Alexa?

    • +1

Both. IIRC the S20 can also be flashed to support MQTT.

EDIT: also there is IFTTT integration. I have Sonoff stuff hooked up and running with Google Home and Home Assistant.

      • So no bridges or Home Assistant etc needed?

        • +4

Not for Google Home, no. It talks directly to the Sonoff plug via the eWeLink integration.

I can't talk about Alexa though, although I imagine it's the same.

        • @ausmechkeyboards:

          Sweet - thanks ;)

        • works fine with Alexa. I have both and consider Echo integration better. When I add new Sonoff devices, I can just discover them in the Alexa app but with Google Home app, I need to unlink my account and re-link it to see new devices. Hope that process changes later.

        • +3

          @EggMan28:

Not anymore. You just say "Hey Google, sync my devices" and it refreshes everything.

        • @ausmechkeyboards: Awesome, thanks. I have had to unlink/relink my Xiaomi account in the past when I added something. Looks like this may solve that.

    • Yes according to this article from August 2017. eWeLink is their ecosystem so you can check that for compatibility.

    • i use one of these with my google home. works quite well. SONOFF is on the Google Home list

  • Nice Find OP!

Does anyone know, How does this unit compare with Xiaomi Mi Home Smart WiFi Socket? for example this one here -> https://www.gearbest.com/power-strips/pp_341431.html

    Thanks.

    • +4
      • Native Google Home, Alexa and IFTTT integration
      • Can be flashed to support MQTT
      • Does not require Mi Home app or anything like it
      • Emm, i'm in! thanks for the info.

      • +1

Not sure what you'd call "native google home", but this still requires the eWeLink app, in the same manner that Xiaomi has its own app. Am I missing something?

        • +1

          No, that's what I mean.

Xiaomi doesn't have Google Home integration, you're probably thinking of Yeelight which is a separate company that Xiaomi just added under their umbrella of smart devices.

You only need the eWeLink app to register the device to your account and provide WiFi details so that the device can connect to your router. From that point on, eWeLink's cloud servers integrate with Google Home and everything happens in the background.

For non-native integration, I mean things using bridges like IFTTT and similar.

      • For what its worth, the Xiaomi alternative is much smaller/compact.

And for anyone else interested, keep in mind the chinese sockets are upsidedown - and may cause issues depending on where you would like to install/make use of the adapter.

      • Don't need Mi home app!
        I am in.
        Thanks.

  • i can't for the life of me get these things to work with my google home device.
It comes up as a device eg "light,"fan" etc on google home but when i tell google home to turn on lights in the living room (room i assigned the switch to) or turn off fan, i get the response "the device is not set up"

    • Did you configure it in the ewelink app?

      • yup no issues with setting up ewelinmk app or getting google home to detect.
my issue is voice command doesn't seem to be able to control the switches

    • you havent linked the SONOFF account via Google Home.

      • Im pretty sure I have, I had to do the whole login to ewe link from the Google home app and waiting for connecting of devices, after a quick moment it appears on my google home list along with my other devices like chromecast and TV etc.

So this is boggling my mind, watched the videos followed the instructions, everything seemingly ok

        • Hmm ye sounds like you are doing it all right. I had the same issues adding my yeelight account… It'd ask me to enter my password and then seemingly take an extended time loading a screen, and then suddenly skipping and going back to Google home without linking the account… Is that what you are getting as well? It just suddenly worked the day after for me

  • How long did yours take to arrive?

    • It was shipped out Dec 6 and I got mine yesterday on the 18th. So under 2 weeks.

      • That is good. Cant find any Belkin Wemo Switches for sale. This might have to be the next best thing.

        • +1

According to Bunnings rep, the Wemo range has been pulled from Aus market.

        • @Jetsom: Thanks

  • Got 3x outlets, thanks.

  • Thanks, got 2.

  • Thanks got 3x more :)

  • son of the ……………

  • +1

Probably not Australian compliant, just so you know

  • Okay is it just me or I can only select the EU plug version of this thing?

    • Nevermind I figured it out but looks like sold out

  • Yep. Sold out of AU stock but still have other versions available.

    • You still haven't answered the question cheepwun.

What device did you write your comment on?

Is it a device with wifi? A device with Bluetooth? A device with NFC? A device with a camera? A device with Facebook, whatsapp or Facebook messenger installed? A device with any Google apps installed? A device with a screen (I’ve read a comment of yours RE radiation from displays)?

If the answer to any of those is yes, then even you must recognise the hypocrisy of your posts.

      • -1

You must have a serious case of amnesia. But keep asking. You're fun.

PS. Idea is to reduce exposure. Virtually impossible to eliminate it. And yes, I don't use any Facebook or Google apps. Just as I don't go out of my way to surround myself with 2.4 GHz. I also modified my xbox360 to be 100% microwave-free. Don't carry a phone in pocket either. Ask me again.

        Your life, bud.

You still haven’t answered the question. Do you have amnesia?

You once said “a cheepwun”. That’s it. If you’re so confident point to where you’ve actually answered the question.

          I’m waiting.

What device do you use to browse ozbargain and post comments with?

        • When it comes to answering the question please don’t get amnesia. Again. Please just answer the question. It’s really very simple. Here’s a clue: the answer to the question doesn’t involve replying with a meme or using the word amnesia. It involves naming the device you use to browse ozbargain.

        • @Symbiotic:
Check the referrer logs and keep wasting your time. Don't use up all your downvotes at once.

        • -1

          @cheepwun:

Again, you didn’t quite manage to answer the question. I’ll admit you did follow the instructions in that you didn’t reply with a meme, and you didn’t use the word amnesia.

          We are SO CLOSE cheepwun!

Let’s try one more time. It’s so straightforward. You claim you’ve answered, but in reality you haven’t actually answered the question.

What device do you use to browse OzBargain and write comments with?

        • @Symbiotic:
          What shoes are you wearing?
PS. Also what movies do you like?

  • They're less than $15 on both aliexpress and light in the box as well so only a little more expensive if you missed out on the banggood offer.

  • Attention Kmart shoppers… the AU item is still US$9.99 on BG site (in stock).
Maybe it will fail on checkout but decided not to get one.

  • Does it use Chinese server?

  • +1

    Got mine delivered yesterday.

Took 5 minutes to hook up directly to Google Home, and can now power on / off the old pedestal fan.

Just bought another one for $13.04 :)

    • how do you talk to GHome? "hey google, turn on my fan/light/whatever?"

      • Yep, although I use shortcuts, so it's "hey Google, fan on".
