But that doesn't come with a pretend warranty that doesn't do anything.

      • Oh and don't forget the Free Site Seal. You know those easily faked little badges, gotta have one of those.

        • Or the up to 5 days wait for issuance on this one.

        • To be fair, normal users do seem to put some faith in those dumb little badges.

There are times where it's worth buying a Domain Validated cert (e.g. where updating the cert is a pain in the arse on some device, since LE certs expire every 90 days to encourage automating).

But even for paid certs these aren't the cheapest out there: (all prices in US dollars, not Australian dollars)

Certificate type ClickSSL SSLs.com (Namecheap) GoGetSSL.com
      DV, 1 year 14.36 8.95 4.08
      DV, 2 years 25.12 13.98 8.60
      DV, 3 years 34.98 14.97 12.25
      SAN, 3 domains, 1 year 45.00 28.99 26.35
      Wildcard, 1 year 105.00 93.99 55.00
      EV, 1 year 135.00 68.99 88.85

      etc.

In general, if you're running an ordinary website, you just need a simple free domain validated certificate from Let's Encrypt (or cPanel, if you/your hosting provider uses it). A paid domain validated certificate offers no advantage.

If you have a specific need for a paid domain validated certificate, you can find a better price than this site.

If you are running an e-commerce site (and especially if you're taking credit card information), pony up for an Extended Validation cert to get the green bar in your visitors' web browsers (but remember that you have to submit proof you are the business you say you are). And you can still find a better price than this.

Most companies with cPanel can offer a free standard SSL through cPanel AutoSSL (powered by Comodo). You really only need to buy an SSL these days if you want an EV one.

Not comparing to the free ones but other websites sell the same RapidSSL certificate as low as US $8.5. No deal: https://www.cheapsslshop.com/rapidssl-certificate
