make sure you buy two, that's a hell of a lot of data to lose in one go…

    • Surely most people just use these for movies ect? Idk what I'd use for 6tb data… Anywho I love wd blacks, never had a single one fail on me or family.

      • you say "just", but it would take forever to amass 6TB worth of movies. It'd be crazy not to have some redundancy IMO.

        • I've got 1tb full and 2 2tb full. I just give out my externals and delete the doubles after lol.

        • +1

Only takes 6 days to download 6TB using 100Mbit …

        • +4

@Diji1: sure, but it'd take you far longer than that to track them all down in the first place.

        • +3

VR and 4K content is pretty data-heavy (think 5 - 20GB per movie)! So maybe 600 movies and your drive's full.

        • @diamondd: Good point.

        • @Diji1:

Except you're not gonna be downloading anywhere close to 100mbps - plus some older content can be hard to find and likely wont have many seeds if any

        • +1

@Procyon: Hah, 5-20! I'm seeing 50-100gb per movie. 6Tb is peanuts for high BR Atmos stuff

    • +6

If it's not automated, it's not a real backup.
If it's not redundant, it's not a real backup.
If it's not regularly rotated off-site, it's not a real backup.

      • +1

If my home burns down I don't give a shit about things I wouldn't store on Google drive O.O

      • Great initiative, albeit top link is by an ignorant prick.

    • C'mon, I've had 4 disk raid 0 arrays before… Show some commitment lol

  • Price per TB is what I am more interested in but this seems to be pretty competitive still yeah?

    • If you are interested in price per TB then the blacks isn't for you. Maybe look for the reds or blues…

      • +3

This one could be, its beating the $40 per TB mark by quite a bit.

      • Hey tomochin,

Thanks for the heads up, do you know of any deals happening atm for the red or blue WDs?

        • +2

also worth considering that the blacks are far more reliable than the reds and blues. This is ridiculously cheap.

        • The wd red 6tb goes down to around 190USD where as the 6tb blues goes to around 170USD on amazon… There are most likely better deals for them elsewhere and as of atm I have no idea. That being said, the black drives won't be the lowest price per TB as it is a better drive than the red and blues. It all really comes down to what you want to use the drives for. Not saying that this price for the black is not an amazing deal, its actually a super good price but to answer your question if its the best price per TB it is not lol.

        • @tomochin1991:

wd red 6tb goes down to around 190USD where as the 6tb blues goes to around 170USD on amazon

And this is at $163 USD. Just because it's a black and blacks are more expensive, that it can't be the best price per TB currently.

    • I should of just bought one, still cheaper per TB than all the 6TB drives in the current 20% eBay sale :(

  • The main/boot HDD on my two computers at home used to be WD Black too before I upgraded them to SSD. Both drives are now the main data drives on the two computers, and still working without failures.

My only concern is how they would fare as NAS drives in NAS enclosures. Anyone know of noise and heat figures, as compared to the WD Red??

    • +3

Anyone know of noise and heat figures,

The black ones run quite hot. I wouldn't use it for a NAS.

      • +2

Agree. I've got WD 4TB reds in the NAS and haven't had heat issues.

        • Yep, though not WD blacks, I had 7200rpm hitachis in a NAS and that was toasty. Idled in low 40s even in cool spring/autumn.
WD Reds @ 5400rpm, temps dropped literally around 10 degrees.
Unless you're running in a proper DC with cooling etc. I'd stick with 5400rpm for home use.
Also, noise. You'd be amazed how loud 6x 7200rpms can be.

      • In one of my pc's I have a wd red and wd black.
Both 2tb and positioned in drive cage at front of case and lots of cross flow ventilation.
        WD Red 36 degrees
        WD Black 42 Degrees
        Measured with Hard Disk Sentinel

        • Mine use to run in the high 50's. That was a few years back though… It only lasted about 3-4 years before it died.

        • @jv: Must admit the warranty is good.
I had one fail back in 2013 and they sent fedex to pick it up.
Then a new one arrived a month or so later.
          It was 4 years old.

    • With the massive sample size of two I'm sure that's indicative of what we can expect!

  • +2

That's ridiculously cheap… almost too good to be true. That's only slightly more than the Amazon price for a 4TB WD Red. My spidey sense is saying refurb/used drives

    • Condition is listed as new, so at least there's some possible protection from Amazon as the condition of the item is supposedly guaranteed.

  • Just what i was looking for
    Cheers
Bought 3, hopefully cashrewards works too

    • +1

I hope so too. Appreciate if you could upvote :)

  • What does the warranty situation look like when ordering from Amazon US?

    • -5

      zilch….

    • +2

      30 days.
Could always try your luck emailing amazon if anything does happen after 30 days but whether if they would do anything about it is to their discretion.
The warranty policy there is always if anything happens after the 30 days, you deal directly with the manufacturer which in this case is WD in the states. You won't be out of a warranty, its just troublesome having to ship it back there and get it shipped back to you.

      • whether if they would do anything about it is to their discretion.

you'd need to post it back to the US

        • They do a return if you post it back to the US within 30 days. After that you're on your own. I have no idea what WD's position is like on international. I've been burned before by Toshiba who refused to RMA a model that they claimed wasn't sold in Oz, and the US website won't let me submit a RMA from a non-US address. sigh

        • +1

I've had an item that came defective from amazon, emailed the support and got a replacement shipped to me with express shipping free of charge. Didnt ask me to ship it back. Also had another item which I used for about 2 months then it became faulty, support refunded the whole amount and didnt ask me to ship it back. These were around 100$ items though so maybe the price could affect the result, but im not sure hence why i said to their discretion.

        • @tomochin1991:

I've had an item that came defective from amazon

That's different to a warranty claim though.

        • +1

@jv: After 2 months of use and the item became faulty… Thats a warranty claim. When you claim a warranty, the seller could either fix it, replace it with something similar or refund you.

        • @tomochin1991:

After 2 months of use and the item became faulty…

          you changed your story.

I've had an item that came defective from amazon

        • @jv: Lol I didnt change the story, i said I had 2 items with Amazon that both had issues with different reasons. The purpose to say that either defective when received or faulty after a few months. They were pretty easy to deal with in fixing the problem.

        • @tomochin1991:

          Maybe you were just lucky?

      • I bought a WD NAS cloud with 2 WD red from Amazon US. It failed to boot after a power failure. WD send out a courier to pick it up and delivered 2 weeks later. But the drives are refurbished WD red on the return unit.

        • Does WD have a repair centre now in Australia?

A few years ago when I had a WD Green HDD died on me, I was asked to return the HDD back to their repair centre based in either Kuala Lumpur or Penang in Malaysia to get a replacement. Since Australia Post wants to charge me a ridiculous amount of money to post it overseas to one of our nearest neighbor, I delayed posting it for a few months till a holiday trip to Malaysia, and I posted it for literally a few A$ from within Malaysia to their repair centre.

I actually put my Australian address as the return address. I can't remember how long I waited, but the replacement HDD did in fact turn up one day after the defective HDD was posted back.

        • @sschen:

I sent my drives requiring RMA to Thailand.

    • You can always claim warranty direct from WD themselves. Recently I sent back 3 drives purchased in the past from Amazon (1 Black, 1 RE, and 1 Red 4TB's) directly to WD in Thailand, and they shipped me new replacement unused 're-certified' drives. It cost me ~$23 to ship the Three drives back, and they paid for the replacements to be sent back to me. Their labeling is very different to retail drives though so as to make sure the user knows they are re-certified.

  • How does it compares to the WD purple? I want to use it to store surveillance videos as the price is better than WD purple.

    • It'll be fine providing you have some airflow across it.

    • +1

If your running these drives 24/7 then I'd probably get something else. In summer these drives in my pc hit 34-38 degrees and I have fans pushing air through it all the time. In winter they stay at around 30 degrees.

      • I am going to run it in a qnap, which has fans running at the back.

        • +1

Think you should get something like the red drives for a qnap… These drives will get a lot hotter when its stuck in something like a 4 bay qnap NAS enclosure. Especially if they are really close to each other, they get even hotter. As stated above, people get 40 degrees or more on a much better / bigger more airflow pc case so itd be worse in a qnap. I run 4x 8tb reds in qnap and even those stay at the 35-40 degrees.
I also had the Seagate enterprise edition 3x 7200rpm HDDS running in NAS for a week and they've hit 50-60 degrees which i pulled it out and now run it on my desktop. I would assume the wd black 7200rpm drives hitting those temperatures if its stacked up in a small NAS bay.

      • +2

is 34-38 degrees in summer that hot really?

      • +2

Running constantly at those tempratures does nothing, zip to drive reliability.

  • Thanks mate.
    Grabbed a couple.

  • poo, i just bought the 4tb from msy for $170 recently

wonder if i can return it - still in its shrink wrap

    • They don't do change of mind returns.

      • I thought they did, but charge a restocking fee

        • The one's in Perth definitely don't. Going by their regular run-in's with the ACCC they hardly provide proper RMA service, let alone change of mind returns.

  • Getting confused. The 4K random read performance is quite poor based on UserBenchmark results. Other results are good (inc. 4K random write). There are apparently two models WD6001FZWX and WD6002FZWX.

Some of the reviews on neweggs are not so positive.

Anyway, looks like the deal ended.

  • Woohoo!! Managed to purchase one before it expired :)

  • +1

Dang, looks like I just missed out… =(

    • +1

      dammit, me too! :'(

    • +1

My order was cancelled due to a "technical error" so not sure how many actually got it anyways.

  • Surely you would just set up RAID for the same price

  • +1

I bought one and paid as usd 163.68. But the credit card shown deduction of Au$303.

    I cancelled it.

    • 28 Degrees Card?

      • Just an AU master card.

    • What price was on the email confirmation? I think people who purchased this deal need to see this post and check!

      • My email confirmation shows $163.68USD. Hasn't shown up on credit card yet

      • $322.38US for 2 for me.

      • It was USD163.68. But CC is A303.21

  • +1

Got a cancellation email this morning due to 'technical error', like ethan961 above.

    • I was going to order but then noticed the seller wasn't actually Amazon but Amazon selling on behalf of someone else. Had issues with such purchases in the past, so I decided not to bother.

  • I got a charge of $420.95AU for two drives. No cancellation email.

  • Shipping notification on the 2 I bought as well.

  • I ordered 2 that were due to ship on Dec 25. Now when I look at the order it says I only ordered 1.

  • Got both of mine today. They came in a sealed brown box with drive info on it, serial number etc. Great deal.

  • Mine arrived finally. In a usb 3.0 enclosure it's getting ~225MB/s in both read and write which is pretty sweet.

Made in Thailand and mnufacture date is October 2017 :)
