Intel X25-M Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drive 160GB [SA2MH160G2R5] $299.00

640

Got 2 from their box hill store just now.

I know G3 version will comes out shortly.

But consider the price is around 1.87 per GB, I recon this one should classified as a bargain.

Couldn't find any cheaper source over the web. Please correct me if I wrong.

They also provide shipping for extra $15

How do u guys think?

Are you sure this price is correct? I can't believe my eyes. It's even cheaper than Amazon.com!

    • 100% positive, I'm using it right now.

    • +1

Price is correct, they even had it for $279 on special couple weeks ago.

      • +1

if only they do 279 again…

      • +2

why didnt you share it with us couple weeks ago? ='(

        • Sorry :(

          I don't know why!

  • Holy moley, that price is AMAZING!!!!

Might actually buy a SSD now, been waiting for something like this happen!

    • so hurry up, sry I forget to ask how many the got in stock

  • +1

I think the price is right, this deal has been around for some weeks as per posts on Whirlpool.

  • +1

Whoa cheapest on staticice is 540.

  • I bought mine from them a couple of weeks ago and they said they had another shipment coming in about now. I'd say there is heaps in stock.

No doubt, intel is trying to flog these off before the next generation are released.

    • how much will g3 drives cost

  • +2

Impressive price for any 160ish gig SSD, no doubt about it, even more so for an Intel Drive!!!
Ordered, even though i have an SSD in my main machine and laptop already :-P
NEVER going back to a normal Drive for a boot drive after seeing the improvements an SSD brings.

    • +3

Agreed. The performance boost of SSD makes any other upgrade a waste of time. The laptop feels like something out of a sci-fi movie when it has an SSD.

      • what sort of improvement do you notice?

        • imagine being able to open every single one of your programs including pshop ie8 outlook etc one after the other without slowing down.

        • +8
        • +1

          wow

all i can say is wow

        • +1

Boot time improves for starters, dramatically.
Also the time till usable AFTER boot lowers dramatically as well. Everyone has seen it… The desktop loads, you open a program cause you think windows is "ready" and 60 secs later the program finally opens.. This is reduced massively with an SSD, the PC is usable within seconds of the desktop appearing.
It's more noticeable on laptops as they have slower hard drives to begin with, as well as often having much more crapware loading at windows boot, so the gains are just that much more obvious.

All these comments are making me think of getting an ssd for my i7 computer.

        • thx for the replies guys, i have and i5-750. ill check the finances and balance the want and needs

        • I have an i5-750 too, don't use it regularly enough to justify an SSD though. :(

    • +3

i just can't believe the people with expensive systems but skip on an SSD drive. GET ONE!

      • +1

same. i'd rather an ssd with i3 than an i7 with hdd on laptop.

        • definitely! the biggest bottlenecks on laptops are the hdd IMO. they are just so shockingly slow.

  • Great price and Intel makes the best SSD.

  • excuse my ignorance, but how do we install these ssd drives into our computers? Do we need special 2.5" bay holders and plug them in as like normal standard hard drives?

    • You don't 'need' it, you could just put them anywhere but yeah those 2.5>3.5 bays makes it much easier and it's what I'm using.

    • +2

You can put them anywhere. I got little sticky velcro dots holding mine to the bottom of the case ;-)
They are very light and Velcro holds them EASILY.

    • +2

Retail version comes with the bracket.

    • thanks for the reply guys, i guess if we're not moving our towers too often, there shouldnt be an issue

      • +3

you can shake the SSD drive as much as you like and you wont lose data.

    • Comes with bracket, all the necessary screws for the SSD to provided bracket, and bracket to hard drive cage and a big sticker.

  • +1

This drive should come with a 3.5-2.5 adapter. Mine did

  • Hmmm…..very very tempting………
Anyone know what the shipping's like up to qld?

    Edit: Ooops, shipping = $15

    • Do it!

If you need a larger SSD then this is worth it, otherwise a 60GB sandforce is the way to go.

    • And just for reference shipping came to $25 to Sydney for me. Ouch.

  • What about OCZ? I got the impression on Whirlpool that they were the best..

    • OCZ uses sandforce in there drives sandforce is a chipset for SSD drive's that produces the fasted read & writes speed in benchmarks but This intel drive feels super fast in real life use and its an awesome price for 160GB's intel drive.

    • Intel still makes the best. OCZ are a close second.

ed: for "price/performance" ratio, OCZ is best.

  • once intel switches to 22nm compared to the current 34nm flash, the 160gb drive will cost about same as the 80GB at release, right?

so around 300? but faster? i've got a falcon 1 64gb just wondering whether to wait or buy.

    • Are you sure you'll feel any difference? Some of the differences between SSDs are so small that they can be measured only but not really felt when in operation.

      • hmm then i'll wait till ssd is cheaper. the current 64gb is fast enough.

I found some forum topics and articles that mentioned TRIM and firmware issues. Does anyone know if this model has the latest firmware with TRIM support?

  • G2 has TRIM support.

Great drive, I have 2 and paid a lot more than this for them.

  • -1

Time to pick your brains guys

I just have a old Dell Studio laptop. It has a 250gb HDD in it.
I could make the sacrifice down to 160gb, but what would be the easiest way to make a full backup of my computer and then whack this thing in, then restore it all?
I have a 1tb at my disposal so no problem there.

    Appreciate your time guys!

    • Go to your local pc shop and buy a 2.5" usb enclosure. To find out what is required "IDE or SATA enclosure" just take out the hard drive from your dell laptop to check.. lots of pins mean its an IDE drive and a small plastic line with connector strips means SATA

Install that laptop drive in the USB enclosure and your done! ALL your data can now be used on any PC anywhere.

Put the SSD inside your laptop and install windows… if u want to copy files back from your old drive plug it in the USB of the laptop and your done.. this should cost about $10 to $20 dollars for the enclosure but will save u time and give you a new use for that old laptop hard drive. + a backup of your files if you want to leave them on there after u copy them back to your new SSD in the laptop

    • +1

If the Windows install on the Dell is still in good order and you don't want to go through the pain of a reinstall then get hold of a copy of a program like Acronis true image, make an image of the old drive, reimage it to the new one and away you go. I did this to 2 laptops recently and it works flawlessly.

If it's operating system other than Win 7 though i would think about upgrading for the TRIM support.

    • Thanks guys - I prefer the idea of the True Image program, don't wanna have to be re-installing Windows 7 as I have no more keys.

ALSO - some people should not be able to vote…

  • What's the difference between SSDSA2MH160G2R5 (sold by PCDIY) and SSDSA2MH160G2K5 (on Intel's website)?

    http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/product…

    • One is retail package (R5) and the other is OEM (K5).

      • Intel says K5 has pretty box, which seems retail to me. C1 is OEM.

    • yep the R at the end indicates retail, which means 3 years (i think) warranty and the 3.5" bracket.

  • +1

I almost purcased a pair of these drives a month ago. for $299 each from PCDIIY…
Luckily I read the reviews first.
These appear cheap, compared to their "original price" and were considered very fast when first released.. however.. these are now a generation behind…(and the competition and caught upa dn overtkaen intel int he mainstream SSD segment fo the market.

Read the comparisions between the older Intel drives and the current sandfroce 1200 based drives (which are cheaper and faster than the intel drives)…

Basically these drives are only cheap if you want an intel drive..
If you want bang for buck and speed.. you would not be looking at these drives..

    • so tempted to get it
got a link for any reviews?

  • I don't even need it but i'm tempted to get it and leave it lying around in case i want to use it one day!! Anyone think i should?!

    • +3

buy it when you need it, the price will probably lower by then :) gd luck :D

      • +2

I abide by a similar principle when buying new storage: only buy as much as you really need in the short term, even it its not the least $/GB) because by the time you need more, possibly a year down the track, the prices are much much lower by then.

        • +1

Mm good point. It's just such a bargain tho, it feels like a shame to give it up xD

  • anyone knows what kind of external case should i buy for this hard drive? Just a standard 2.5" case would do or a special case?

    • +2

well any external 2.5 inch case will fit it, but using an SSD as an external drive (assuming a USB 2 connection) is a large waste of it's abilities as it will be severely hamstrung by the limitations of USB 2.

      • agreed, the main benefit is having the OS and your programs/games installed on it not as a storage drive. usb 2 maximum transmission speed is 480mbit/sec which translates to max ~60MB/sec. benchmarking my SSD on some of the read tests were in the range of 200-250MB/sec :o

    • That's illegal

    • +1

I just tried the checkout, GST is included.

      • Good to see things have changed. A few months ago when I was browsing for parts on PCDIY, GST was not included in the price on the product pages. Not a nice surprise when I went to checkout. :P

    • +2

      Yes it is.

    • +3

      fail troll

    • open your eyes

  • Ended? :(

    • It's OK, something better will come along.

  • Did you get an e-mail to say all web orders have been cancelled?
Excuse given is that stock was sold duging the weekend but the website had an error in not showing it was sold out. :(
Dear Customer,

Thank you for shopping with PCDIY.

Unfortunately all of our branches have run out this Intel SSD during the weekend, but due to some technical issue of our website, it was not de-listed when it was out of stock.

If you have not made the bank transfer, please do not do it. We have to cancel this order and we sincerely apologize for all the inconvenience caused.
• Well that's a huge disappointment. What about the customers that have already paid via direct bank transfer, and sent a copy of the receipt to PC DIY's sales team?

I hate having to go chasing refunds.

  • :(

  • Damn. Was gonna pick one up after work today. I was hoping that what someone said about this deal having been whirlpool for weeks meant they would still be available till at least this afternoon.

  • How far back do the cancellations go?

grabs pitchfork It's Dell all over again… (FYI that was a joke)

    Dear visitors of OZBargain,

We did not anticipate that the demand for our 160GB X25-M Intel SSDs would be so great, as we actually had this promotion on quite some time ago. On the day that this particular post went online (it is a posted by an OzBargain member not PCDIY), we had so many orders that we sold all our existing stocks within the same day through our PCDIY Online Store.

Hopefully we would try to get more stocks in and we will post them on OZBargain as soon as they are available. Once again PDCIY apologise for the inconviniences caused and thank you for your support.

    PCDIY

    • +1

Cool. Thanks PCDIY for the feedback. This is why I prefer you guys to MSY, much better customer service.

    • We'll not be angry at PCDIY, if you can offer new stocks asap at a lower price or at least keep it the same lol :P

      • +3

Haha. Thats a bit rich. You can't demand a lower price just because they sold out.

        • I DEMAND LOWER PRICES! :D

    • If we didn't get an email, does that mean our order will be filled?

      • Likewise.
My internet banking also shows that the transaction is pending.
I wonder what's going to happen.

  • Just received this email…

    Dear customer

    Thanks for shopping with PCDIY.

Last weekend, we received high volumes of order for our 160GB X25-M Intel SSDs. We run out our stock in a short time. We have tried our best to contact different suppliers, but currently this product is shortage in Australia wide.

We have no choice but cancel your order. We will credit back to you very soon. Once again apologize for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your support.

    Kind Regards,

Web Sales Team | PCDIY ONLINE

  • Poor effort from PCDIY - obviously no stock level tracking on the ordering system.

WOuld be interesting to know how many they are fulfilling and how many they are cancelling.

That said it was a GREAT PRICE and my tip is that PCDIY will post more specials on OzBargain from now on…
