I've had it on my iphone for about 6-7 years and I think I used it once.

    • +3

When you were in high school (/when Wolfram was every student's saviour), did computers exist?

      • +3

I have fond memories of using Wolfram Alfa to solve and graph quadratic equations in Year 12 :’) It was a true saviour… until test time!

        • +3

          quadratic equations

          Now you got me interested.
We have reached the turning point / vertex of this Deal's discussion.

    • +8

      Did it understand your questions?

    • +11

Thanks, I was just wondering how much you used Wolfram Alpha.
      Thanks for letting us know.

    • +1

It's a great app if you do physics, finance or maths problems and need an understanding of the equations

      • +1

        Can it do Fourier transforms?

        • +4

          Yes.

        • +7

          @MathNerd:
As they say - username checks out😉

        • +1

@Infidel: I always aim to please.

        • +5

@MathNerd: I would've thought you always aimed to solve x.

        • +1

@Munki: Solve for x? Yes I have to, because the pirates asked me to find their treasure and it's marked X on their map.

      • +3

Yeah, you totally understand shit when you use WolframAlpha to solve stuff. Sounds legit.

        • +3

It doesn't just solve it, it tells you how to solve it. Being able to get the step-by-step breakdown of any problem probably got me through Y12 Methods.

        • @Jolakot: gotta love year 12 Methods and Spesh.

    • +1

I've had it on my iphone

jv is an iOS user. Mind = Blown!

      • +1

Only used the iPhone once, though.

  • +3

    thanks!

  • +4

has no idea what this was.. should prob put it in the description

    • +14

If you don't know what it is, you probably don't need it.

      • +4

perhaps, but it's free, and I'm curious :)

    • +3

Assuming knowledge - leaving out basic details, in deal title or description is not acceptable according to posting guidelines.
I have a degree in Mathematics with some engineering from a few years back & I had no idea what this deal was until I read the comments.

    • +2

Please, tell me more about the generic search engine that computes things like this.

      • +1

Bloody hell, thats simple stuff you can almost do in your head, no app needed.

    • +2

      You failed at Googling.

      • +3

        duck duck go.
        fail #3 posting my woes

  • +9

I just wet my pants seeing this deal, my math senses went all tingly.

This app is integral to everyone's phone needs

It doesn't differentiate between your abilities in maths

It'll make you think in a straight line

Hopefully your head won't be spinning in circles after using this

    • +5

It is true: Maths is the only subject that counts

There are 10 types of people in this world: those that understand binary notation and those that don’t… and those that need Wolfram|Alpha to understand Ternary ;-) http://m.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=10+ternary+to+decimal

I might be going off on a tangent but I must admit, I am a little afraid of negative numbers… truely, I will stop at nothing to avoid them…. +1 for this deal

      • +2

        up vote for the effort

      • +2

So true! And of those who don't, every 4 out of 3 don't even understand fractions!

    • I'm unclear as to why people keep saying using Wolfram Alpha is amazing for learning. Using a calculator to solve maths problems doesn't teach you maths …

  • +1

What's the difference between the app and the website?

    • +1

On desktop, not much. But on mobile it can be clunky loading the web interface in your browser every time- additionally, the mobile app has a more graphical UI so you can easily see expressions with nested brackets and fractions etc.

    • +4

Don't know about this one, but the android one gives you step by step solutions for free which the website wants you to pay for.

Edit: just checked, step by step is free too here

      • +3

This would've been great when I was still in uni :(

        Anyway that's pretty sweet.

        • +1

Yeah if only I had this for free 3 years ago haha

  • +4

Who still uses a Windows Phone?

    • +6

      Savas.

      • +3

        .savaS

  • -1

Microsoft link says free, click on "get the app" that'll be $4.45 thanks.

    • +3

No its not. I just downloaded it free.

    • +4

Works fine for Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile but not Windows 8/8.1 and Windows Phone 8/8.1.

      • +1

thanks this was the problem. Can't say I'm surprised just about everything else has stopped working on this phone.

  • +1

Damn this app still hasn't been updated. Still has the looks from the Windows 8.1 version of the apps.

  • Pity not iOS

  • +3

Thought I'd use this throughout my engineering degree but ended up using it a total of 0 times.

  • +2

Supposedly it allows you to access the Pro features for ever. Thats freaking amazing.

    Oh, needs window 10. dang

  • +1

Coming up as $2.25 … expired?

    • +1

Same, would like to know :)

      • +1

        yeah, what's up with it?…

      • +1

It is part of the Microsoft Countdown Sale, someone must've messed up discounting it by 100% instead of 50%

        • +2

Clearly that someone didn't use WolframAlpha

  • +1

I signed up for AUD2.25. It created a recurring payment to Microsoft which I cancelled.

It also forces you to use a Microsoft browser, probably Microsoft edge, and I could not change the font size.

That aside, Wolfram Alpha is the crowning jewel in 2000 years of science and maths. This is the simple online version and there is a much more extensive PC version which includes a programming language.

I use it which my Grade 12/12 maths and physics students. If you need to solve a definite integral or factor a polynomial, this is for you.

You can use the free version at https://www.wolframalpha.com/

    Examples https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=factor+x%5E3-1

    https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=government+debt+of+Aus…

    https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=using+Newton%27s+metho…

    https://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=what+is+a+second+cousi…

    • That's really weird, i bought it last year for $3.69 and it wasn't a recurring payment. I have used it lots of times as well, thanks for the tips! I bought the app so i could see the working out for free and support the developer.
