Linksys Velop 3-Pack Wi-Fi Mesh System $478 ($320 off) at Harvey Norman ($378 with AmEx Rebate)

20

Was looking at the Google Wifi or Netgear Orbi… but saw this instead.
Has good reviews, e.g. http://au.pcmag.com/eero/45900/guide/the-best-wi-fi-mesh-net…

$20 less than the previously expired deal of $498

I personally price-matched at JB Hifi ($478 to match Harvey Norman) as happened to be there at the time.
Funnily enough it had a sticker price of $652 in-store but was showing as $521 online.

  • Why are people choosing these over Ubiquiti?

    • Mesh networks with multiple nodes can potentially give better Wifi coverage in challenging environments than a single access point could ever be capable of. And many of the mesh networks also allow wired ethernet connections to non-Wifi devices around the house, which can be useful.

      • Ubiquiti is a mesh network that uses power over ethernet, so much easier to install as they don't require a separate power source.

        • Most people who buy a Ubiquiti access point for their home only buy one. If you do buy multiple units, they're only easy to install if your house is already wired for ethernet in every location you want to place an access point, and already have a separate PoE router. The consumer-grade mesh networks just need a power socket in each node location, which are far more common in your average home.

Also, while Ubiquiti has a lot of fancy features it's much harder to set up, compared to the very noob-friendly consumer products like Velop, Google Wifi etc.
