Wireless1 End of Year Sale + Free Delivery + 5% off Sitewide / Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC PRO 802.11ac Dual Radio Access Point $151.05

411
5MOREOFF

There are three offers from Wireless 1, a sponsor of OzBargain 11th Birthday Western Sydney Meetup.

  1. End of year discount on selected products.
  2. Free delivery sitewide.
  3. An additional 5% off with coupon code 5MOREOFF.

These offers stack to make for some good bargains. For example, the Ubitquiti UniFi AP AC PRO wireless access point at $151.05 (Sold Out) is its third cheapest ever price and only $3.85 more than the record of $147.20 (sydneytec was slow in jacking its prices during an eBay 20% off sale).

Credits for the Ubitquiti deal go to mouth and yolow. I've waited 5 hours but there was no action from them, so I am posting it.

This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2017

  • Can someone comment why these have become so popular? Any benefits to highlight over the standard wifi router option?

      • Can't most of the wifi routers do this nowadays?

          Not for $150

Built like a tank. I setup once and I never have to go back again. It covers the whole house easily (single story house).

The UniFi range is designed for "enterprise" use. Think multiple WAPs across multiple sites. You simply log into an UniFi controller and all the WAPs, gateways, routers, clients are there. Click a few buttons and everything gets deployed, configured, secured, and updated. Try doing that with multiple home grade Wi-Fi routers, you'll waste an entire working day just writing down each router's physical location, IP and admin credential.

Your boss asks you to stop employees' phones from using the company's Wi-Fi during work hours. Will you spend another day reconfiguring each router or a few minutes reconfiguring a controller?

Wifi router has to "shout" to reach the furthest corners of the house. Then laptop (or phone) has to "shout" back. And because of interference and noise the bitrates are slower.

Unifi access points you can put several (say three) around the house. They can each "whisper" and combined they cover the whole house. The other benefit is they're closer so you get faster bitrates.

To give some numbers my old 1900ac router covered the front half of the house OK, but the back of the house the coverage was poor, so only getting 50Mbps transfer rates. Now with unifi access points getting 400Mbps transfer rates anywhere in the house, and up to 800Mbps in the lounge room and study (where the APs are sitting on bookshelves).

You can get similar coverage by turning a spare wifi router into "bridged" mode. But you might have trouble with roaming and keeping all of the configurations in sync. The unifi system takes all the effort out of it.

$150 for a matching PoE switch is a great price too - https://www.wireless1.com.au/ubiquiti-unifi-us-8-60w-switch-…

  • Noob question - can I use the Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC PRO with FTTP by plugging ethernet in directly from the NTD? I.e. can I forego the router and effectively use this as the router?

    • If you flash it with dd-wrt or openwrt then you could do this. But that is on your own head if you try that.

      • So it becomes a full-fledged router with a firmware flash?

        • +1

From my very brief google it is possible.

Kinda like putting a Kia engine in a Ferrari though.

        • @Elpres: Decided to go with the VR2800 in the end. Figured the hassle and cost of getting a separate performance modem wasn't worth it :)

You can't because it isn't a router, it's just an access point and only broadcasts the same network. If you were able to get a connection, it'd only be the one client device. My recommendation is to get a pretty cheap router and use the Ubiquiti

No, you need the Unifi Security Gateway.

I’m running a USG, 8 port POE router and a single AC Pro and the whole setup is just great. Single pane of glass management and a great GUI accessible from everywhere. Well worth buying into IMHO.

    • So you dont need the Cloud Key in order to manage the systems?

      • you could run the software on your computer

      • I have mine running off an old raspberry pi.
It's not easy to install but possible.
The PC option is much easier but needs to be on to work.
The other option is if you have an x86 Nas like a qnap ts251+ it has a unifi installer.
The cloud key is good where you don't have the above.. also allows remote management..

Very good price for these AP's
        Thanks OP..

        • Thanks for clarifying. Thinking of jumping across to a ubiquiti set up.

        • +1

needs to be on to work

Yes, the controller needs to be online to configure or reconfigure the AP, but once it's setup you can turn off the controller and they'll happily chug along.

      • Basic functionality as an access point does not require a cloud key. It can be configured with the UniFi app. That’s how I run mine. I’d imagine it’d become slightly impractical from a cable management perspective if you plan to use more than 2.

        From the manual.

        “Mobile App Installation
Ubiquiti Networks also offers the UniFi mobile app, which
is available from the App Store (iOS) or Google PlayTM Store (Android). You can use it to provision a UniFi AP for basic functionality without configuring a UniFi Controller. It also allows seamless provisioning of APs for remote controllers (controllers not on the same Layer 2 network) and easy access to local controllers and those monitored on unifi.ubnt.com”

You literally plug it into your router, download the app, give it an SSID and password and then join the new network. Easy as.

  • I have the cloud key also. Did run controller on pc for a while.

    • Which one is better?

  • Is the Unifi comparable to Netgear Orbi?

    • I would compare Netgear Orbi to Ubiquiti Amplifi.

      • thanks which would you choose between the 2?

        • I am all in into Ubiquti Unifi.
It's a bit more technical. But I like it.
An I am sure it's an overkill for a lot of people. :)

    • Different kind of network

      • Is it different because one is a Mesh network and the other is a wifi access point?

What benefits are there for each scenario?

        Thanks

        • You will get better performance from this one, as you are connecting each one to 1GB network interfaces

        • I consider mesh as a last resort when there is no other ways to connect additional access point.

  • Great price. Paid $165 for it yesterday.

  • Netgear D7000 at $175.75 delivered seems a good deal.

  • This or a mesh system?

    • Different scenarios

      • sorry bit of a noob - which situations would suit which system in your opinion?

        • If you have ethernet avaiable to each location you want to install an AP, go for Unifi.
Otherwise if you need some good 'wireless extender', mesh could be useful.

        • This will be better if you have Ethernet as you will get 3x3 antennas just for clients not for communication between themselves

When registering they send you back your password in clear text..
