  • Can you use this VPN in China to access gmail?

    • +5

trying right now but it's super slow… very very poor VPN.. would hate to have paid for this.

Try VPN Master instead.. has been working well for me and offers a 7 day trial period (remember to unsubscribe if you dont want to continue it). The free version is a bit hit and miss as you can't always connect… but since play store is blocked in China you'll need to download this first (assuming you have android)… no idea if this works on other platforms.

      • Yeah I'm also in the process of looking for a VPN that works in China. Any recommendations? Don't mind to pay for it.

        • Ive used expressvpn a few times and it was pretty good but things can change quickly in china and its been a few months. They have a free 1 month money back guarantee so its no risk to give it a go….

        • @pointnlarf:

Thanks m8, have you tried VyprVPN? Are they any good?

        • Try rixcloud, it use a different protocol than VPN but does the same thing even better since it's more undetectable (the protocol is called shadowsocks, and been wildly used in China and Iran), the client software supports English, but you have to use Google translate to process the purchase

        • I paid $2.5 a month for a private vps (500GB) with vultr, very reliable and probably the best vpn for china, was able to stream youtube at 2k quality during peak hours (9pm friday & saturday), the only downside is you have to set it up yourself, find a instruction you should be able to do it within 30 mins

  • Awesome Thanks OP !

    • This is not about this deal in particular, more about VPN deals that pop up on OzB from time to time

Deals often come by way of affiliation or promotional mechanisms. People find some deal, and they post it on a deal sites. Some make money doing it, others do it because they are trying to help others. By definition, this increases the likelihood that these cheap providers will have questionable practices, as the cheapest vpn deal is likely to come from the company that sells your data, empties your bank accounts, steals your crypto currencies, auctions your digital identity the most times, etc.

For the same reasons, the second cheapest vpn deal is likely to come from a company that does the same too. And the third… etc.

Remember, when you turn a vpn on, all your data goes through it and everything can be recorded, logged and queried by the provider, instead of your ISP/MSP. Your PII, your credentials- if used on a phone; your location, apps, metadata, messages, calendar, etc. Your encrypted sessions can be attacked in many ways, so in real terms everything can be seen 'plain text'.

      Are you feeling lucky?

My advice, look for trustworthy providers first, especially those that you buy a vpn from. Price is secondary, always. And avoid all those sites that list, 'The top 10 vpn providers'

      • I thought Windscribe WAS trustworthy. I've seen some really negative reviews of PIA on some software site that was reviewing VPNs. Windscribe was the next one most of them were saying to use instead.

Since you seem to know and say to avoid 'top ten' lists… How about your list of trustworthy ones?

        • Re Windscribe, I couldn't possibly say.

Which is good? We all suffer the same conundrum. All I can do is suggest you search- 'choosing a vpn' trust is a set of terms that should do nicely. There are many community sites created specifically around this topic, some even have detailed tables comparing them.

I won't suggest any as IANAL, and I will not make myself in any way liable for you losing your digital future.

    Thanks.

    Using the Chrome browser version.
Sitting in Tasmania and Speedtest says i'm getting 52 Mbps vs my usual 78 Mbps so that's pretty good.
    That's via Kong Kong.

This vpn has become pretty slow. It works well apart from that. I expect Tunnelbear might be faster. Or try other vpn's. Sluggish experience.

  • It says for use with PC and MAC. What do they mean by PC? Is PC just wintel?

    • lol? i havent heard that term in 20+ years

    • Yes, PC still refer to MS Windows computers.

  • +1

Just a heads up, you don't have to use a personal email, any email is fine (I used, [email protected], sorry if it belongs to you), the following page has the code, I don't know what they actually send by email.

    • you shall soon find out !

    • +1

      From above:

"Now submit the form. You will have to confirm your email address;"

      • That's only for the new users, I should have said that I was an existing user of Windscribe.

    • +3

OMG someone is spamming my email address again!

      • +6

        hello@hello, is it me you're looking.com.au for?

    • +2

Hello, it's Frank Walker from National Tiles.

Please stop using my email address, there's endless spam coming through every minute.

On that note, are you looking for any wall and floor tiles? We're offering a guaranteed 25% off (so you only pay 3/4th of the ticket price).

      • Hello Hello, its Chris, and Marie!

    • I entered a secondary (less important) email address but still decided to unsubscribe from SoS after I got my upgrade :D

    • So you don't trust them with your email, but you trust them with your traffic?

Sounds like MiTM issues from hell going down here

      • Are SoS and Winscribe the same?

  • Any decent free deals (or similar vpn's as this ones big monthly allowance)….as apposed to just a week trial that arent slow? cheers

  • +3

It can be slow, but the speed varies.

I have found this to be the most stable VPN I have used so far (have only used free versions from Ozbargain).

If this VPN gets disconnected for some reason, it stops browsing (which is a good thing).

One of the previous freebees would drop out, and you would not even know unless you were watching the status tray icon all the time.

There may be better, but considering the price this one is excellent value and definitely worth trying.

  • this any good for downloading? not used a vpn before but probs should start

  • oh ok…cool… will grab are torrents safe?

  • voucher code doesnt appear after clicking have voucher?

  • great deal, thanks OP. good timing actually, my paid windscribe membership was due for renewal in a couple of weeks. i paid $90 last year to use it. i notice others have said its slow however ive always had full speed when using it.

  • +1

I can't see a code on their site or in the email.

    • ditto. Where is the said voucher code??

  • got it going but agree, VERY slow…..

  • +2

Will this work for U.S Netflix?

    • I just tested the extension of Chrome and the windows version, and it did not work.

  • Thanks! Couldn't come any more prompt as I first used it last night and downloaded 7+ gb out of my 10 free GBs…

  • The Avira deal was much better, unlimited data, so far decent speeds.

  • The best way to across through the firewall in China is using shadowsocks
    a guidance to shadowsocks: https://shadowsocks.org/en/config/quick-guide.html

And you'd better set a private shadowsocks service to keep this method reliable as well.

    A $2.5/mounth vps to set a private service: http://www.vultr.com/

    ======

for those only want to use free services:

search "ss 翻墙" via google plus when you can use google.
Then find free " ss service" and add as much as possible.

    1. So is the company trustworthy (data/crypto currency-wise)?
    2. How do you get the 60GB? Mine is showing I can confirm email to get 10GB?

Edit: Confirming your email gives the 60GB.

  • Oh and does this apply to Android?

My internet is an Optus 4G SIM in a pocket wifi. Does this secure the wifi, or only browsers on the PC? If PC only, how do I get the 60GB to apply to accessing the internet on my phone through the wifi?
