ANZ Rewards Black Card 75,000 Points - $375 Annual Fee, Waived First Year

750

Reposting of a previous deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/332333) marked expired but still valid:

75,000 bonus Rewards Points when you spend $2,500 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months
$0 annual fee for the first year, $375 per year there after (recommend cancelling card within first year)

75,000 Rewards Points = 37,500 Velocity Points or at least $320 WISH gift cards

I find this a great card to have on alternate years to the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black (i.e. waiting for the 12 months since closing to pass, to qualify for offer again). The 'Rewards' family of cards is different to the 'Frequent Flyer' family of cards so you can qualify for this offer concurrently with the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black offer (e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355115)

Other benefits that some people may find useful: travel insurance, unlimited access to selected Veloce lounges.

Earn rates: 2 reward points per $1 spend up to $5000 per statement period, then 1 reward point per $1 spend.

Summary of key fine print:
- Offer available to new and approved applicants who apply for an ANZ Rewards Black credit card account.
- Not available in conjunction with other offers, packages or promotions, or when transferring from an existing ANZ credit card or where you currently hold or have closed an ANZ Rewards, ANZ Rewards Platinum or ANZ Rewards Black credit card within the previous twelve months. This offer applies only once per eligible customer.
- Eligible Purchase means purchases which are eligible to earn Reward Points. Purchases which are not eligible to earn Reward Points are described in the ANZ Rewards– Rewards Program Terms and Conditions booklet, for example fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, balance transfers, premiums paid for ANZ Credit Card Insurance and transactions for gambling or gaming purposes will not earn Reward Points.
- The bonus Reward Points will be credited to your ANZ account within two months of the eligible spend criteria being met. If you transfer or cancel your new ANZ Rewards Black credit card account before the introductory bonus Reward Points are processed to your account, you may become ineligible for these bonus Reward Points.

  • So you open and cancel cards frequently? Does that have a negative effect on your credit rating?

    • from what I heard it's okay as long as you wait a bit.. eg, 3-6mths?
someone else might have had some experience with that.

    • +1

6 cards over 3 years, still got a very good rating, so in my case not really.

Great card this one, have done the same as OP. The earn on this is actually better than the FF version when you take into accounts bonus offers converting rewards across. 1.3ffppd.

      • Do you sign up for credit cards like this and then cancel once you get the bonus, or do you cancel after waiting 3-6months and sign up for another card immediately?

        • +1

Nope, keep most for the full period. Eg the Rewards card is my main Visa spend card due to the high earn rate. What other Visa card gives 1.3pts per dollar.

While ANZ is great, there have been plenty of offers from other banks etc to keep the train moving along. Having a partner also helps out.

Note: will always cancel before the annual fee where no bonus is earnt for the second year. Amex cards are great as you get a free flight or travel credit to offset the fee….with ANZ there is nothing.

        • @Coops1:
I see Velocity points is 1pt/$ spend.
Do you mean there are often 30% bonus points regularly?

        • +1

          @Gaz1:

Usually twice a year when converting to velocity, last one was 15+15 or 30% in November, May last year was 15+35 or 50% extra….the +x was only for ANZ.

        • @Coops1: Isn't the normal (no bonus factored in) transfer rate from ANZ rewards points to Qantas and Velocity 2 to 1?

        • @spiff:
Yes, you get 2 Rewards points per $ spent, and 2 rewards points convert to 1 Velocity point.

From a normal spend perspective on the ANZ Black FF your only getting 1 Qantas point per $ spent period. With the Rewards and warehousing, then taking up a bonus offer, this has given you 1.3 or 1.5 velocity points per $ spent. You can’t get a better rate than that on ANY Visa card.

        • @Coops1: Oh ok I misread your post. I thought you were comparing the 75k bonus qff vs 75k rewards points instead of the ongoing earn rate per $.

FWIW ongoing earn rate isn't as big of a draw for me since I'd be looking to close it as soon as the bonus points come through.

it's USA based site so not sure how much of it actually applies here

Once you go Black, you close, then come back in 12 months.
    See you in May, ANZ…

    • bonus each time?

      • Every time. Don't forget ANZ FF in your downtime.

        • The only T&C I am never sure about is "This offer applies only once per eligible customer." I always wonder if ANZ can argue you have had this offer before, even if it is 1-2 years ago… never had an issue myself but I do wonder…

        • +1

@kelea: I think you just answered your own question.

        • @kelea:
Maybe that's a new clause to stop people ever getting a bonus again (or allowing them to decline it as they see fit)?

        • @kelea: The key word is "eligible". 12 months after cancelling you become eligible again, so no issue!

      • +2

Im on my 4th round of bonus points with this card. Just superb!!!

  • What other no-fee rewards cards are people signing up for currently? I have 2 months before my next ANZ card :)

    • Never mind - just read it more closely, alternate this and the ANZ Frequent Flyer card :)

  • I literally just applied for the FF ANZ Black yesterday - I thought this offer would be for new ANZ customers only, how can you go about getting this offer concurrently like you say?

    • +2

See djkelly69's reply below to another comment. The 'Frequent Flyer' family of cards is separate to the 'Rewards' family of cards.

Also, per first point of the summary of fine print, you don't need to be a new ANZ customer. Just a new applicant for the product.

  • Can you apply for this credit card as well as the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355115

    • +3

      Relevant term for this card:

Not available … when transferring from an existing ANZ credit card or where you currently hold or have closed an ANZ Rewards, ANZ Rewards Platinum or ANZ Rewards Black credit card within the previous twelve months.

Relevant term for the FF card:

Not available … when transferring from an existing ANZ credit card or where you currently hold or have closed an ANZ Frequent Flyer, ANZ Frequent Flyer Gold, ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum or ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card within the previous twelve months.

Rewards card is concerned about if you have held a Rewards card in the last 12 months, FF card is concerned about whether you have held a FF card in the last 12 months.

So yes, you can. Whether you should or not is a question for yourself and your credit rating.

      • d'oh. Here I am slumming it on the stock AMEX Discovery QFF card because I'm still waiting for my 12 month period to finish. Didn't realise the T&Cs contained them to their respective cards. I thought it was just "ANZ Card Credit" overall to keep it simple for myself.

      • So just confirm: say if I just canceled an existing ANZ "Frequent Flyer" card and then apply for this ANZ "Rewards Black" card a few days later then according to the T&C i am eligible for the bonus offer?

        • +1

Dont even have to cancel the ANZ FF…

(According to the T&Cs, i havent done it)

        • @djkelly69:

Thanks, I cancelled anyway as they charged me the fee for next year. Got reimbursed though

        • @djkelly69:
I just have to prepare my reasoning for the cancellation phone call for my Frequent Flyer Black which i've already been awarded the bonus points for :/.. My usual tactic is i've found a better offer with a different bank.. I guess now its that i prefer the higher points earn on the Rewards Black card..

      • Great to have this brought to my attention, didn't realise i had been missing out on this opportunity for so long. Thanks :)

      • Thanks for bring that to our attention. I cancelled 9/02/2017 my ANZ FF. Didn't know I could sign up with the rewards.

  • Isn't there a minimum salary required for this?

    • +1

Be a permanent Australian resident, earning a minimum annual income of $75,000

      • Would that be single income, or household? My partner makes 60k, I make 55k

        • Nevermind, I asked online chat and they advised it was single income

  • Looking for my first rewards credit card, what would you guys recommend? (This one seems interesting as well as the flight credit one)

    • +1

The other ANZ FF (Qantas) card is probably the best deal at the moment, so would go for that if you have the income.

Amex Explorer is pretty decent as well - I assume that is what you mean by the travel credit one?

      • Thanks! yep the Amex Explorer!
I'm not in a rush to get one at the moment. In the past what has been the best one? I'm happy to wait for another one like that to arise.

        • +1

No real point dwelling on past deals, as banks cut back big time on credit card bonuses in the last year due to some law/rule changes. Not likely to get better in the short term, so go with what you can.

There used to be a lot of ~60k points/no annual fee for the first year type deals, but there are not so many anymore.

Work out what sort of points you want to target and why (read PointHacks for this if you haven't already), where most of your spending will be, and then jump in.

        • @djkelly69:
Thanks for the tips, will definitely do some research before jumping in.

      • Back then Amex Explorer had 100K sign on bonus, now its only 50K :(

  • This deal is a bit meh, current one with 75000 Qantas FF bonus much better. With only about $320 in real dollar value and $2500 spend in 3 months is too much, even the normally expensive one is Commbank currently offering $300 credit for only $1000 spend on their low rate card, the only onus is no first year waiver ($60).

    • Post it as separate deal

    • +2

I too find the Qantas FF deal better myself, but still on my 12 months waiting period after closure. Rewards Black is a good filler for me in the meantime.

    • could you give more derails anout CBA card?
      thanks

    • 75000 QF points has a real dollar value of $320?????? Your spending them the wrong way. Even at a lousy 1c a point selling them on OzB has a real value of $750. Personally Id be disspointed if I didnt squeeze $3000 value out of 75k QFpoints

      • Do you have any tips? I have no idea how to stretch mine out beyond $500 let alone $3k

      • +1

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the ANZ reward points value at $320, not QFF points.

  • +4

"unlimited access to selected Veloce lounges" - this is basically a joke. could never find a lounge relevant for travel.

    • It's not for everyone - I've personally found the Dubai one very handy. Something for nothing in my opinion as I would never get the card for that benefit, but appreciate it when it's available for 'free'.

      • point well taken. just wanted to point out that veloce is rubbish. would have much preferred priority pass.

        • +1

Veloce is rubbish. There are very few lounges and none in Australia. Unlikely to be useful.

    • +1

What's worse is their website is so out of date. I was in Bangkok a month ago trying to use my card and they said ANZ are no longer paying fees to us so we can't let you in…

  • Perfect, my ANZ QFF expires in Feb :D

  • +1

I cancelled my FF black card in November, but I still hold my ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures card. Does that make me ineligible for this promotion?

    • -1

Read a few posts up - a few others have asked and there's a good answer above.

  • not a bad deal…. shame its ANZ!

  • Is the income individual or household?

  • I have an ANZ Travel Adventure card, does that mean i can cancel this and apply for this tomorrow?

  • what are eligible purchases? i tried to find it in the fine print but could not see it.

  • Are there any other non-ANZ QFF Visa/MasterCard cards out there that have a $0 annual fee, at least for the first year?

  • Is this just a Visa card or do they issue an Amex card in addition?

    • No Amex anymore.

  • Hey guys there is a 100K points reward ANZ black card which i signed up last month with same condition and everything but 25K extra points…

Go to into an ANZ branch and ask for 100K instead of 75K they will get you through the application.

    • Lols, don’t reckon.

      • can provide evidence if you want i'm already applied for it lol

        • Is this an in-store only promotion?

        • +2

Please do share so those interested and able to get to a store can enquire about this offer.

        • +3

I went in branch and asked and they said its only 75K points bonus, not 100K. Please share on how you obtained 100K bonus points??

  • I have a silly question to why the annual card fee is ridiculously expensive? Regards

    • Presumably they justify it due to high rewards earn rate (compared to some cheaper cards) plus the perks (eg lounge access, etc).

  • So say if I just canceled an existing ANZ "Frequent Flyer" card and then apply for this ANZ "Rewards Black" card a few days later then according to the T&C i am eligible for the bonus offer?

    • yes - thats my plan after talking to ANZ. They are different "streams" - so you can bounce between them for the bonuses every 12 months or so.

      • Thanks, just applied

  • +1

I got an ANZ card on a previous offer. They reneged and instead sent me a gift card. Complete “bait and switch” tactic. No matter the evidence and screenshots of the points offer - they couldn’t give a s**t.

  • Did anyone receive the 75 Status Credits associated with this offer?

    • I dont think it is associated with this offer. That was for the travel card, this is the rewards card.

  • Been waiting over 15 minutes to get a CRN for internet banking. I already regret signing up for this card.

  • Anyone heard stories of people getting approved if they didn't meet the $75k required income? How strict are they with this? Would it help if you had a lot in savings?

    • +1

I was rejected once as they thought my payslip didn't match my application. Ie. That I earned less than 75k. I called and explained the confusing payslip and was approved. So I take from that they do check. No idea how strict.

      • cheers. i heard that amex offer some leeway and look at personal circumstances, and people around 50k mark were approved for the 65k card, so hopefully ANZ isn't that strict

        • I think ANZ are fairly strict as partner applied for ANZ Platinum at ~65k as they suggested it wouldn’t be enough for Black. I rang to discuss options.

Son was just approved by Amex at 53k (65k min for Velocity platinum). Most Amex are based on “household income”, but no references to this in application.

        • @Coops1: what was the outcome of the phone call? or did you mean you phoned, and they suggested you go for platinum instead of black?

        • +1

          @modernwalls:
They recommended platinum as not enough earn for Black….likely a scripted response but.

  • on the pds it state no points earned for goverment charges. so has anyone used the black rewards card to pay their local council rates and earned points?

  • Do anyone has idea when the bonus points arrive? On you 3rd statement or 4th statment?

I'm with ANZ black reward (not flyer card) and I don't see bonus points in my 3rd statment

  • Are you able to apply for the FF and the rewards at the same time? I half applied for the reward black card before realizing I was doing the wrong one but call up the credit card department until Monday morning.

    • You should. I went ff then rewards before cancelling ff, and got points for both.
