  • Google doesn't recognise my girlfriend's Asian accent (she can't even trigger it), but Alexa does straight away. This is without any voice training.

    • Because Amazon was hiring lots of Asian engineers. :)

  • I love my echo. Connected to LIFX, Yeelights (led strips and bulbs), Ecobee Thermostat… Very happy with it. Listen In is a GREAT feature, so is the 'Call …' function (I used the american alexa app).

  • typical, purchased a gen 1 echo last week….. lets hope the g1 gets all the Australian integration!

  • Worst thing is when there's a 'here's an interesting new bit of tech' piece on TV about Alexa - my Dot goes crazy trying to answer the TV every time 'Alexa' is said.

    • +1

You'll find all the Amazon ads have "Alexa" trigger word masked to stop this happening.

Although I was watching Spiderman Homecoming and at the end when Tony Stark is speaking to Peter Parker my Google Home all of sudden listed the closest three pubs. NFI why.

      • +1

because you need to hit up a pub after watching spiderman? :)

        • Tony Stark knows everything haha :)

    • Google does it as well

  • I have a Sonos speaker set up at home, including a couple of Ones. Can I use the Echo Dot as a bathroom speaker and link with the other Sonos speakers around the house? Would like a small bathroom speaker (like a Dot) without having to spend the $$ for another Sonos speaker.

    • No you cant link Echo to Sonos for speakers only for voice commands

    • You can control the Sonos with the alexa, but not stream from sonos to the echos. You can still play music on the dot tho

  • Thanks just order an echo for my Sonos system

  • Any differences between Echo and Echo Dot besides the speakers?

    • No

      • Ok, might just get the Dot then…

  • Get the plus version if you want home automation in the future, it comes with ZigBee Smart Hub engine
    only available in Echo Plus

  • Will the calling feature work in Australia?

  • Ordered two Dots for $59 after the $20 amazon credit from the wipes deal not long ago.

  • Anyone know whether it is ok to use local credit card on Amazon Australia, meaning we won't get charge international transaction fee (on the card that charged them)?

    • yes, you won't get charged an international fee if using amazon.com.au .

      • Thanks for the info @jkerekes.

  • YAY, I already have two dots and one amazon show. Can't wait to change them to an Australian address.

    • did you import the Amazon show? what sort of power input does it takes?
I want to replace my home intercom with 5 amazon show can it connect to existing intercom wiring?

      • I found one on gumtree. Bought it for $150 AUD, Score!!

I think the owner was jumping amazon ship to google home.

It has an AU power plug that plugs directly into the back of the unit. Not sure if the previous owner has purchased this separately or if it came like that when she ordered it.

not sure what you mean about using it with your intercom wiring sorry.

        • Can you tell me what power input required for echo show? I got intercom system that takes 12V input and mounts on the wall with power cabling behind it in the wall, I want to rip it out and wall mount amazon show in its place

    • You can do this (changing address to an Australian one) now! It’s the first thing I did when I saw this deal. I can now ask Alexa to get me a ride (Uber) and tell me about local weather. No more American location!

  • Contemplating replacing my Sonos Play1 with the Echo. At the moment i use an Echo Dot and a Sonos in combination for both upstairs and downstairs. Does anyone have experience if the sound quality of the Echo (not the dot) is good enough to replace a Sonos Play1 ? I know the new Sonos One have them intgerated but the Echo intro offer sounds good (not a pun)

    • +1

Dont get rid of your play1. It sounds musically better than an Echo. Getting a sonos one to replace you play1 is probably a better idea than just having a standalone echo.

  • I wonder if they will sell the "Silver" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiAXbTJ3ZZc

  • I just don't get these devices (Google and Amazon, and whoever else).
To each his/her own of course.

  • When are Amazon going to sell their Fire tablets locally?

  • Just wondering what else it can do other than

    • switching appliances & lights on/off,
    • read news/weather, play music ….

Looking to buy, but can't justify spending $119 on it. Also android voice assistant on my phone can do some of these things.

Any current GH/Alexa owners please advise, share experiences how it improved their lives or is just another buy a new product just for the sake of buying it because its something new or somehow fulfills you. Thanks
