      • +2

I used to think it was called Bango sauce. A little asian lady once pulled it out the cupboard and said bango bango when I said I wish I could get indome soy sauce in a bottle. Now it has a song, you don't ask for the bango sauce, you chant - bango, bango, bango.

      • Who stocks Bango in Melbourne western suburbs or CBD ?

How can this be cheaper than the one in Indo

    • 2 explanations:
      1. This is old or unwanted stock and Coles try to get rid of them.
      2. Price in Indo very much depends on where you purchase the item from. You can easily cut the middle men over there and prices would drop significantly if you know how.

Knowing Coles and all those syndicates, i prefer answer no. 2.

      • Coz… Indo people don't like this runny sauce that much compare to Bango, try add this to Rawon or Soto Ayam

        • Mehhh quite the opposite, ABC sells really well in Indo due to its low price tags. Agree taste wise, Bango is more condensed but you can't beat price.

        • @tempura: I mean like, ABC does sell a lot of other stuffs and cheaper price, but Bango has only sauce that's famous and stands for many years, if they don't get it right they would have been long gone ~~ I can't beat price, but I know what taste better YMMV ~~

  • Is it in all coles stores in Sydney?

    • I'd think so as it wasn't clearance item or anything

Is this made in China? I do not trust food made in China.

    • Made in Indonesia. They put this in everything from noodles to fried rice.

Try it with siracha hot sauce. Sweet and hot.

    • Great dipping sauce too

    • Why is being negged?

      • Asian countries hygiene? Lol

        • +5

Even Chinese people don't trust their food, i don't see how your comment is funny.

        • a lot of products though they seem native to a country are made in the original country and others eg kikoman soy is made in japan, singapore and china.
whether you get the sinpaore or japan version depends where you shop and who is importing it …. via kikoman australia or grey market.

    • Made by/for Heinz in Indonesia.

  • How does this price compare with the larger bottles in the Asian grocery store? (I don't remember)

    • This is the large (620ml) bottle, normally $3-$3.80 at Asian grocery stores. The Coles deal is cheap.

  • +1

    How is kecap pronounced?

    • +2

      Ketchup.

      With silent "t".

      • Not sure if serious

        • Ketsap

        • +5

          Indonesian reporting in.

It's pronounced 'keh-chaap', so not far off from 'ketchup' except with more emphasis on the 'aa' sound.

        • +1

Its more like K as in letter K and chap.

          K chap.

  • I'm not adventurous enough to try foreign stuff. What does it taste like? What's the closest sauce you would compare it with?

    • +1

You've never had a Thai/Chinese/Indian takeaway??? This is like a sweet soy sauce.

      • I've tasted sweet soy sauce, but that's what they label it.

I've eaten indian but not with sweet sauce.

        • +1

Dark soy sauce is for dark colour increase, and light soy sauce is for flavour (salty) increase. So this tastes like light soy sauce mixed with brown sugar. It's more like a syrup than a sauce. (Imagine ETA BBQ sauce concentrated by about 50%.) In other words, it's a little too strong/sickly to used like tomato/BBQ sauce. It's more used 'watered down' slightly. Not with water, but I mean put some on plain rice then stir it in to thin it out a bit. One thing I use it for is if I make a stir fry that turns out to not have enough flavour, I add a tsp in at a time, tasting each time. So yeah - closest is ETA BBQ sauce with a strong soy sauce taste added.

        • Indians don't use this sauce in their cooking

    • Taste sweet. manis = sweet

    • Tasted like Asian's vegemite.

      Sweet revenge.

    • it's a soy sauce, just a sweet one, maybe like teriyaki sauce. it's $2, just give it to someone if you don't like it.

    • +1

If you've ever eaten Mee Goreng, you will have tasted it before.

    • Put it on your noodles, then experiment from there. I put it in casseroles and homemade gravy these days, its great for colour without heaps of salt.
