Hainan Airlines, recently ranked the 9th best airline in the world is offering flights to Haikou, China for $214 return. These usually go for $700 or so with stops. So $214 nonstop is great. Fares include bags, meals, seats etc. Article from their site

Just search for days via Hainan's website and look through grid view to find the cheap fares. e.g. March 5-13, 7-13, 12-18, 12-20, 14-18, 14-20 + more Screenshot

  • what are the visa implications to fly out of Haikou to say VN or anywhere else out of CHN and fly back in time for your return trip to AU?

    • Only guessing, but at worst it seems like you'd buy two VoA's if transiting thru Haikou and leaving China…

  • Good relax and fun. 10 years ago I went there and paid less than $2 to hire a momey to pick a coconut from the tree.

Just got back from China on Hainan and have nothing bad to say. Service was great on the flight, only issues were with the inefficiencies of Chinese airports. There A330-300 planes running on this are mostly new and are a great product. Some flights are still using the older A330-200 which aren't bad, but you can clearly see the planes are ageing a bit.

    • Can tourist be more vulnerable to getting scammed in Hainan than other province? That's what I'm scared about. Tourists being taken advantaged

      • I feel that would be an issue regardless which province of China, or in many cases regardless which city or country you are in in the world.

Also, I think lambsie was just saying they flew on Hainan Airlines from somewhere in China - not that lambsie was actually in Hainan.

      • No need to be chicken about Hainam. :)

  • Anyone know how much for flights Haikou to Hong Kong?

Apparently, China's newest nuclear missile submarine is currently based at Hainan Island.

Would really appreciate it if deals from Scott's cheap flights are continually posted here :)

    • +3

I subscribe to premium however many of the deals are already posted on here before SCF finds them and some of the deals found by SCF are meh. However, this one is a gem and beat out Secret Flying (another good source). You're not missing anything if you're checking OzBargain.

      • Secret flying has the same deal as the one on scf

  • One oddity of Sanya was that I saw quite a few signs with Cyrillic. It seems to be a warm weather stomping ground of the Russians.

And here are some amusing Chinglish signs.

    • Chinglish = engrish
I do enjoy having a laugh.

Managed to snare 2x tickets mid march for $214 a pop. Buy first, ask for leave later! As far as I can tell there are no more $214 fares in March to May, expired now then?

    • What if your leave was denied? Hypothetically.

    • Dates still coming up. March 7-13, 7-11 and others. You may need to refresh the site.

  • Would this be a system bug? I saw $214 for one of the dates on my phone but it shows a different price on my pc when I tried to book 2 tickes. Or it expired?

    • Still showing on desktop as of 11AM. e.g. March 5-13. Reload the site as the site is not great.

      • All gone now.

  • Not all gone! I just booked it now. There's a few dates left for mid march

    • Cool, yeah seeing 5-11, 5-13, 7-11, 7-13, 12-18, 12-20, 14-18, 14-20, 19-27, 19-29, 21-27, 21-29 etc.

  • Regarding the "visa on arrival" thing, has anyone done this at Haikou airport recently with an Australian passport? Was that an easy process? Cheers.

  • edit - got website blocked message by my US VPN - clearly they don't want me flying there :)

    • I had the opposite issue a few days ago (probably due to Getflix DNS) and HAD to use a VPN to access their site.

  • still seeing 12th to the 27th and 14th to the 27th for those who need a quick reference.

  • Just booked March 14-20 for $214.26. I have flown Hainan airlines before to Mainland China. They were very good!

    • Just this last Aug-September I flew return on Hainan to Beijing for $288 and spent 25 days going in a big circle around Mainland China. Had I known that these cheap fares would continue, I would have done one province at a time!

      • How did you find getting around outside the big cities? Can you speak Mandarin?

  • I'm booked for March 7-13, flying solo. Seems like there isn't too much to do on the island, so I'm looking to hike up WuZhi Mountain in central Hainan.

Ideally I'll find a local guide who can hep me get there, or go with a group of OzBargainers if others are keen.

  • so, all agree price is cheap but what can we see in there, that is important question. any local day tours etc?

  • Still a few flights available, just booked.

Cheapish one way to ZUH near Macau/Hong Kong around the end of March if didn't want to stay on the island.

Legendary! Was still able to book tonight, thanks!

For those who have booked the tickets, I have done some research and obtained Visa on arrival information for Australian passport holders, you can apply VOA on Haikou.

From Hainan Airlines website (https://www.hainanairlines.com/AU/GB/VISA), it mentioned that For free, accurate, and up-to-date advice on visa requirements, please visit the IATA website at http://www.iatatravelcentre.com

The following information regarding VOA was extracted from this website - http://www.iatatravelcentre.com

    Visa Exemptions:
Nationals of Australia arriving at Sanya (SYX) and traveling on an organized tour to Hainan province in a tourist group of 5 or more people for a maximum stay of 30 days. Tours must be organized by a travel agent registered in Hainan province and approved by the National Tourism Administration of China.

Nationals of Australia arriving at Haikou (HAK) and traveling on an organized tour to Hainan province in a tourist group of 5 or more people for a maximum stay of 15 days. Tours must be organized by a travel agent registered in Hainan province and approved by the National Tourism Administration of China.

Visa Issuance (TAKE NOTE: THIS APPLIED FOR ALL WHO HAVE BOOKED THE TICKETS AND TRAVEL TO HAIKOU AS THEIR FIRST STOP FROM AUSTRALIA)

Nationals of Australia can obtain a visa on arrival at Sanya (SYX) for a maximum stay of 30 days. They must have:
    - a passport valid for at least 6 months on arrival; and
    - 2 passport photos; and
    - a hotel reservation; and
    - an invitation letter from Tourist Agency or other corporations/organizers/sponsors; and
    - contact information from a local person; and
    - documents that prove the purpose of visit.
Payable in cash only. Local currency or U.S dollar are accepted.

6 or more months validity is standard for most destinations
2 passport photos: it's easy to take with your own camera following the pretty strict DFAT requirements which I found is fine for VN and probably also for CN, make a matrix and print 6 or 8 on a standard print at your local print station
a hostel reservation is fine, the hostel owner can be the contact, in practice I wasn't asked, they were too busy issuing passports

They were in fact a bit miffed when I paid in RMB (I had some leftover) as everybody else was paying a round figure of USD20 at the time, but not a dealbreaker. They also took their own digital pictures of incoming tourists.

      • Thanks for the information. It is really useful as I will be going to Haikou in March.

I couldn't afford this until I got paid now (monthly salary), but I realised that I've now missed out.

On their website it states that this deal was only valid until 4th February, it was a good deal.

    "Fly Farther, to More Destinations
Hot deals to China from 215 AUD until Feb 4th. Get VISA ON ARRIVAL in Haikou!"

Shame I can't afford to go anywhere international now :(

    • Grab a credit card deal, jag some free sign up points (might even get you somewhere?) and get ready for the next one!

      • Thanks but I don’t earn enough for points credit cards.
Working part time due to various medical issues :/

        • Bankwest Zero Platinum might be worth a look.

Got this for an aunt and uncle on a pension, so lower income should be OK. No rewards, but no annual fee and free travel insurance with no foreign transaction fees.

        • @mcnugget: thanks :)

  • what a shit hole. I feel sorry for anyone who bought this 'bargain'.
First time I have ever traveled somewhere and wished I didn't bother at all.
The airline is fine, but everything from once you land to the moment you try to leave is a hassle.
    Definitely not traveler-friendly.

    • May I ask what happened? Did the visa on arrival thing not work well?

      • +2

If you're getting visa on arrival:

        1) take 2 visa-sized photos (any post office or office works should be able to do this for you, including ones at most major airports before departure)

        2) TAKE CHINESE CASH - yes, you need to change money beforehand. This is bullshit IMO. The visa booth at Hainan airport even has "Payment by cash or bank card" and use usual visa/MC/Amex/etc symbols, but their card payments were 'out of order'. Not their problem apparently and were going to turn me back because I didn't bring Chinese cash with me, because it's apparently unreasonable to assume I could get cash out at an international airport. I managed to convince someone to escort me to the only ATM in the entire airport to get cash out - also out of order. The only currency exchange at the airport - also only takes cash, no cards. If it wasn't for luckily being stuck at the visa box with two other Ozbargain travelers who were having trouble for other reasons (refusing to issue a visa longer than 15 days despite their flights being sold for 30 days travel) and being able to borrow CNY off them until we got to the city where I could get money out to pay them back, I would have had to fly back on the spot - presumably at my expense as well and not at Ozbargain flight rates.

This was JUST the visa stage. I hadn't even left the airport before having a series of problems, it continued throughout the entire trip all the way up until departure. 8 solid days of dramas - some admittedly my own fault for being underprepared and overambitious thinking I could get by with minimal Mandarin, but most largely out of my control and not at all my own fault.

I still want to see some other parts of China but seriously, (profanity) Hainan.

        • thanks for sharing, and yes please, anything u have, i’m all ears.. flying out tomorrow

Thanks for sharing. Very helpful information as I am travelling soon.

    • Please tell us more info as i will be travelling soon……

  • Oh Welcome to Haikou, you ozbargainer.

  • Hi,

I arrived in Hainan yesterday and so far everything is great, I have read a few post saying people got board or didn't have good experiences but as of now we are really liking it.

I'm traveling with my wife and 2 kids (1 and 3 year old) and everything has been smooth… The visa on arrival process is the only thing I would like to see improved (it took about 2 hours) but not really a big deal

I'm here for 6 more days so post any questions and I'll try to answer

Staying in Haikou only - was planning on a day or 2 in Sanya but with the about of things to do at our resort and in the area I doubt we will do that in this trip
