Can't comment on the Kogan quality, but looks identical to the Kambrook DC Fan that I bought so likely just a reskinned Kogan special.
    https://www.staxappliances.com.au/kambrook-smarter-cooling-p…

Bought the Kambrook for $150 a year ago and couldn't be happier, i've always had a cheapo $20 pedestal fan and they are fine but with only 3 speeds aren't very adjustable and suck the power.

The DC fan has 26 speeds and different modes for different conditions. Use it almost every night even during winter on a low variable speed to maintain air flow.

Have no ragrets spending the money on a decent model and would consider this Kogan model at $89 a great deal if the quality is comparable to the Kambrook

    • +31

I respect that you love your fan, but those $20 pedestal or box fans have been more than adequate.

I don't see a need for 26 speeds for the fan, I only every use low and medium on the fans anyway.

      https://www.canstarblue.com.au/energy/electricity/portable-f…

Pedestal fans use up between 1c to 2c per hour of energy so I'm not sure where 'suck the power' comes from. If there is a power saving then you are talking about fractions of a cent, how long would it take to claw back spending $90+ on a fan?

      • +1

We have a $20 40cm kmart pedestal fan and use it everyday except during winter and it's been going strong for round 3-4 years now.

We also have a slightly more expensive pedestal fan a GVA "GVA40PRG" also a 40cm pedestal but cost about $30 and it is a lot quieter and the air isn't as turbulent or choppy as the kmart one.

      • I bought one off of Gumtree for $20. Only 6 speeds, but loving it. Had same $20 cheap ones with 3 speed but even on lowest it was still loud, let alone on full power. This, even on the highest is still a lot quieter. Nevertheless neither will cool you better. If you don't mind the noise, cheaper is probably better depending on how long it will last.

      • great point

      • +4

Yeah the $20 fans are okay, but this is better quality, plus it has a remote control. I have one of these fans, and the best part is the quiet mode settings, where it runs almost silently on low setting during sleep. Most annoying thing is the bright blue lights, so you need to cover those if you use it in the bedroom.

        • +1

You'd think sleep mode would turn the lights off?

        • @EightImmortals: You'd think so, but the fan is not perfect. I have some tinted film taped over the lights. They could have been a lot smarter with the design in a lot of ways. The dial remote is too sensitive to get the exact speed you want. Also, they could have put a dimmer on the lights. But overall this is a good price for this fan, but definitely not worth the $159 regular price.

        • @TazR: Cheers, our current fan a bunch of red leds, we just throw a shirt over them and they bug us…not so good for using the remote of course but once it's set we generally leave it. Will try out the red film for sure. :)

        • +1

@EightImmortals: I bought some of this tint: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/152259280791
Might need a few layers though. Seems to pick up the remote signal through it. There is much more there than you need, but will come in handy for other things since manufacturers these days seem to want to put the brightest led's possible in bedroom items…

        • +1

@TazR: Hmm, Kogan just sent me the operating manual, apparently if you hold the power button for 3 seconds (on the fan unit, not the remote)that will shut the display off?

        • @EightImmortals: Interesting - didn't know that - thanks! I still wish they would make it dimmable, but that's the next best thing!

Wouldn't they use more power as have to convert to DC..? Would be a loss there (approx 20-30%), is there some kind power saving after this that I'm missing?

    • If this is actually a Kambrook rebadge then its a good deal. Way better to spend your money on this than continously buy $15 kmart/bigw/target fans that wear down after a few months.

      • +22

What on earth are you doing with them?

I've never had a cheapie break. Not ever. Only been using them in summer for the last 4 odd years though.

        • +3

I've got one that I bought from officeworks for $6. Used it for 4 summers now and still going strong

edit - 3 years not 4. Got if from this deal

        • +1

          @steff:
I got the same fan, still going, it does make lil noise/vibration but that is part of the sleeping harmony.

        • @boomramada: same. mine doesn't swing either. still does the job as long as its pointed in the right direction, I'm happy :)

        • Really? I've had cheapies break all the time. But granted they each lasted at least 5 years. At $9-10 each, I think I'm ahead.

        • +1

@tebbybabes: 5 years per cheap fan = "break all the time"? You have a very different standard of longevity :)

        • Yep, same. I’ve actually used my Kmart one in a shed, which has got sawdust, cement dust, regular dust and all sorts of manners of rubbish floating around it and it’s still going fine. It’s been sitting in the sun on 35 degree days, used outside and inside. The blades are plastic so they don’t rust and it’s light as so easy to put it wherever you want.

I’m not saying that the Kambrook/Kogan one if that’s the case, isn’t any good, I’m sure it probably is, but my Kmart one has really been knocked around and it’s still going fine. Honestly, I’m pretty hard on all my tools and some of the cheaper tools are some that have lasted after lots of abuse.

        • +1

          @44sunsets:

:) Hahaha. You got me there. It was actually more because they each started breaking down one after the other in somewhat close succession.

Since I bought all of them in within 2 years of each other, I suppose it wasn't surprising. The impression of "break all the time" was just reinforced with having to replace them within a few months of each other. :)

        • +1

          @44sunsets:

Also, I did a bit of research after they started failing and things pointed to it being just a bad capacitor. I was toying with the idea of trying to fix them but the wife got ahead of me and just bought new ones… Couldn't really complain because she found $11 ones.

      • +4

Had one cheapie burn out in like 15 years /shrug

        • +7

Did you keep the receipt? Take it back! :)

        • +5

          Name and shame

    • +1

Is all that stuff possible to do theoretically with AC?

To me it all sounds like curved TV or 3D TV. An excuse to sell you a product at a significant premium. In your case 7.5X the cost of the pedestal fan. I'm not sure if those features make it 7.5 times better though.

      • +2

It doesn't. I have the remote I got with mine and am yet to use it. Set it on the lowest and click to turn on, click to turn off. It's not like it has 26 channels that you need a remote for. The main difference is less noise, more speeds and a remote. And 5 blades vs 3.

        • I guess that's an improvement. But still I have to wonder if those features can be engineered into an AC fan? I'm quite sure 5 blades can.

  • +1

Been looking for something to replace my tower fan as that takes too much effort to clean the dust build up inside.

    This looks perfect

    • +1

so this easier to clean ? how so ?

      • +27

With another fan pointing at it on high.

      • +2

Normal pedestal fans the safety grilles can be taken out by a few clips and you can take the back grille and fan blades out for a thorough clean with warm soapy water.

Tower fans you need to unscrew the whole thing but it takes some effort and not really meant to be taken apart for cleaning

      • +2

If you have a leaf blower, then this is the best and quickest way to clean a tower or pedestal fan. Heck I even use it to clean my Dyson vacuum barrel, air con filter even getting dust out of my computer !!!.

        • +2

          Blow it all :)

        • +2

@bargainparker: leaf blower or just a small hobby compressor if you have one anyway

        • It’s sounds funny, but that’s actually what you’re meant to do with sanders, saws, drills etc is to use an air-comp to blow out the dust so that it doesn’t accumulate dust and then overheat the engine, but I’ve done the same thing with chainsaws too. Considering a vacuum only ever collects dust, I think it makes a lot of sense to dedust them every six months or so.

    • +6

Spending more on the fan assessories than the fan itself :P

  • +2

Well I just hope you are not needing that fan anytime soon. I ordered a phone with Kogan more than a week ago and I am still waiting for it. Dispatched in Melbourne for Melbourne delivery 8 days ago…….AND….here comes…..I actually paid for postage. I am not impressed at all. Used Kogan for many things….I don't think I am in a hurry to go back. Emails are also left unresponded.

    • +2

Make sure to leave your review of their service on FB and other public places. The more prominent your critique, of course, the more likely it is that they will feel the need to 'fix' your situation.

  • +2

I bought this fan recently. It's great. Much better than the el cheapo fans. Very quiet. Wife loves it. Also bought a Vornado that we returned. Might look at buying another now at this price.

    • How was the Vornado compared to this fan?

      • +1

The Kogan is much, much better. The Vornado was very loud and barely made any breeze around the room. Pointing it at an open window (when it was cooler outside) also did not remove the hot air as well as I had hoped. For the money the Kogan is a great buy.

  • +1

How many kmart $10 fans would I use before this 'DC HERO' dies?

    • -3

      Probably a dozen or so.

      • +2

Awesome that should be about 24 years then!

        • -8

Yeah, no. More like 2-3 years max.

        • +1

@Orpheus: If your $150 fan dies out of warranty though, you lose a lot more money than if your $15 fan dies out of warranty. And let's not pretend that just because it's DC and costs more, it's immune to breaking.

        • @lostn:

ACL Consumer Guarantees would be taken into consideration for a $150 fan, not so much for a $15 shitter.

        • @PinzVidz: You can afford to break 10 shitters for the price of one DC. I have not had a shitter break yet. How long do you think ACL will cover your DC fan for? 2 years? And if it breaks after that? Two shitters blowing at you for 20% of the cost of a DC will outperform the DC. Or you can cool 2 rooms with it, something one DC can't do.

ACL is incredibly selective of what rights they're going to protect. Most cars come with 3 years warranty (less posh brands come with 5). For a 30-40k car, you expect the lifetime of the car to last you more than 3 years, but you're not getting extended warranty with ACL on cars. Why not? The principle is the same. If you expect a phone to last 2 years, why would you expect only 3 for a much more expensive car?

  • +2

Thanks op! This is such a great deal I am so glad I didn't order one a week ago. Too bad summer is starting to fade away but this will be great throughout the year.

  • +1

We have a few rooms with zilch airflow and sleeping babies. Maybe we do need one or two like this?

    • +1

yes please think of the babies 👶

  • +2

    Damn… Paid 129 about 2 months ago..

Good fan, better than the 30 dollar bunnings one it replaced in terms of more speed options and hence quieter for nights.

Only problem is the screen is very bright, and you can only turn the screen off on the fan itself (ie. Not on the remote). I tinted the screen with a very dark tint and it's still bright.

    • +7

      Tape man, tape

      • Then I won't be able to see it at all!

        • +3

You are lucky. That's why you got the remote with it. When you feel the air blowing, you will know it is on.

        • Non-premium tape.

        • @dm01:

          Duct tape.

  • +4

I'm also one who bought one about a month ago. Don't regret it though as it got me through some hot summer nights in the bedroom (wink wink nudge nudge).
It really is as quiet as it says and the remote control means I can be a lazy bum and not enough get up to turn it on or off.
I usually run it in quiet mode on 3-5/10 and you can hardly hear it. No joke you could almost forget to turn it off in the morning if you were in a hurry.
The screen is exceedingly bright though and being a blue light it can definitely keep you awake. I got some red cellophane from ebay and taped it on the screen.

Edit: decided to get another one for the second room to replace the kmart one I have that's whirring away in the background. I like it that much.

    • red on blue = purple ?

      • Yup, it's purple now but the glare is greatly reduced so that I hardly notice it

    • Dang it, you convinced me, we have a bedroom fan but it's noisy and too blowy…..

    • Did you buy Kogan/DS or Kambrook?

      • Kogan/DS

    • +1

Don't regret it though as it got me through some hot summer nights in the bedroom (wink wink nudge nudge).

Must've been alot of push-ups you did mate =p

    • +2

Yeah it is a great fan. My only complaint is the LED display. So bright at night. I can't figure how to turn it off.

It is easily the best fan I 've had. The base alone is so much an upgrade over ANY fan I've had in my life. And we've used cheapies to vornados and even had a dyson given to us. I think the dyson was the worst in that it was rubbish. The cheapies never last, the bases are always an issue and are flimsy. Rust issues. Frame issues (when you disassemble to clean). The next best fan I have is a chrome one with a decent base, but it does get rust, and the base has a rubber strip to stop scratching and it keeps falling off - it also broke the cable from a bad position of the cable entry point.

      • +4

Hold down the power button on the fan itself (not the remote) for about 3-4 seconds until you see the LED turn off.

        • +1

          Ah legend! Thanks for that!!!

        • +1

          @Mobe1969:

I'm guessing you didn't read the manual lol

        • +2

@montorola: LOL. No. I'm at the age I need reading glasses now, so when I'm assembling something that has visibly simple controls, and a postcard size manual, I generally don't go fetch my glasses… I usually download the digital copy.

  • +1

But impressed by kogan branded items so far, though people are saying this is a rebranded good fan.

Price still puts me off. Like someone else here, I got the remote controlled variable fan from big w (2 years ago now), and it's still perfect.

    • +1

The best of this fan is much more quiet and less heat generated, the bonus are less power consumtion, longer life time of motor and generate more air flow than the cheaper fan.

      • source?

      • -1

what are your real-world sources for these claims? quieter yes (marginally), others theoretically.

        in the real world:

less heat generated - when is the last time your room temperature rose due to a consumer grade pedestal fan?
less power consumption - normal AC fans use about 1c per hour. how many decades would you have to use this to recoup the $80 odd difference?
longer lifetime motor - I'm using a cheapo for 3 years straight. How many of those will this 'longer lifetime' one out last?

        • actually a standard fan can use as much as 100w which is closer to 2.5c. use that 8 hours a day, 365 days a year and that's $73/ year

        • @dy4me: the average is between 1 to 2c

And your calculation is flawed. Even in summer, no one I know leaves the fan on for more than overnight or at best a few days.

Even if you do go to the extreme, it's a few months of a year not all day all year

        • +2

          @dy4me: 100w? Really? Which fan?

        • +1

@steff: I use my fan everyday of the year, for cooling in the summer months and for airflow and background noise in the cooler months.

On a side note to everyone saying cheap fans are fine, I replace mine at least once a year. As they slow down significantly throughout the year.

        • Came here for the funny comments like how you would get at condoms deals but I was disappointed

I guess people take their $90 fans seriously. I suppose if people are happy to pay over $1600 for an iPhone anything is possible!

        • @steff: So overnight isnt 8 hours then? and you do realise there are hotter states in Oz right?

        • @dy4me: I hear what you're saying, but it still doesnt add up.

Go on then and purchase your $90 fan. and enjoy your perceived value.

        • +1

          @ganymede:

Yeah I would call BS on 100W power consumption as well, that would be a monster of a fan. My Vornado 660 on max uses ~53W as measured on a Power-Mate Lite, and that's pushing a LOT of air. I never use it on max, usually the lower settings are more than enough and they use around 35-40W.

        • @dy4me:
"High velocity" fans are not "standard" fans. I could go out and find plenty of examples that are even more powerful, obviously they exist but they're hardly your regular fare.

      • Better turn it off at the power point when not using as it is still using power in standby.

  • Low alright on these? We got one recently that's like a leaf blower on it's lowest setting.

    • See my comment above but yes, it really is whisper quiet on the quiet settings.

  • Thanks OP. This should be a rebranded Midea fan which I am using now, well worth the money, bought another one.

  • +1

I have $50 credit on my Kogan account. I'd happily put this towards purchase of this fan, but it's $89 on Dick Smith website, still $159 on Kogan. Doesn't seem to be a way to apply or transfer the credit. Pity. I'll have to let this pass.

  • +8

I will never, ever understand you, OzBargain. A bunch of tightarses that will spend almost $100 on a bloody pedestal fan.

    • I highly doubt many actually bought any

    • +19

      No no no, you misunderstand.

We didn't spend $100 on this pedestal fan. We SAVED $70 by buying this pedestal fan.

      • +2

You joke, but I seriously believe that a very high number of people here genuinely follow that logic

        • Especially women.

"omg I bought these shoes that were $200,but it's ok because they retail for 599"

  • Any Dick Smith coupons/discount codes around?

I bought this 2 months back for 79 including poatage.Used shipster for express shipping.
    Very good build quality.smooth opearation.
You can turn off beeps and LED
Height adjustment is good but height could be bit more for my liking. Also remote staorage slot on the base is bad design. As the dust settles in and hard to clean the slot.
