Pixel XL 2 have some serious problems with its screen.. just google it

    • +4

I didn't experience any problems with the screen.

      • +1

U wouldn't gamble if paying $1k for a mobile phone. Rather opt for pixel 2 with stable quality and manufactured by HTC team

        • There is No Gamble, it will have 2 year warranty if you experience any problem

        • @vis: Many complaints on Reddit that they won't exchange device due to blue shift.

        • @OnlinePred: Are those comments based in Australia.

        • @vis: Some were yes, some on whirlpool are having the same issues.

        • @vis: ok if you're only after two years of phone life cycle

        • I bought it on Boxing day and i'm loving it. There is blue tint when you see it off center with completely white background but you don't notice it during regular use. Even Note 8 has blue tint, I've tested this in store.

        You mean you haven't.

        Enjoy your burn in.

        • +1

Worth noting that all OLED screens are prone to burn in, some just more so than others

        • -3

          @BoredMartian:

          Your comment is um reassuring?!?!

Name me another smartphone that has an OLED screen has the same reported issue?

          Answer - none.

        • @mg_k:

All OLED screens suffer burn-in. Can you point me to objective testing that shows that the Pixel 2 XL is worse than other phones? Like these tests on the iPhone X and Galaxy phones.

        • @mg_k: I've owned 5 OLED screen phones now, and my parents own an OLED TV. Every single one of them has burnt in to some degree. Galaxy S II, 3, 4, Note 4, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, and a LG B6T TV.

I don't see it as a drawback. Nexus 6P was by far the worst of the lot; but that's still the best phone I've ever used.

        • @BradH13: didnt know thoses phones uses oled

      • yet

Yep, got a Pixel 2 XL from JB like a month ago. Screen is pretty bad, any viewing angle that's not front-on you get this horrible blue tint. Absolutely the most annoying aspect of the phone.

Also realised I can no longer use any of my car's phone holders, because it either squeezes on the power/volume rockers or squeeze the Google Assistant function.

Battery life was not as good as I thought it would be, doesn't beat my S7 Edge but still better than the other Android phones out there. Was tempting to look at the Note8 and S8 but they lag so much compared to the Pixel 2 XL.

Get a magnetic car mount. Something so simple, but so effective. Haven't had my phone fall off once.

Stick the included metal plate under your case and you're good to go.

      • Battery life is fantastic. One of the top phones in the market.
I would look into your apps and permissions.

      • You can change the sensitivity in settings and try again.

For the screen, do you use a completely white theme all the time and view it off center?

And battery life is excellent, i regularly get more than 5-6 hour of screen on time which is pretty good.

With a bunch of new phones getting announced in a couple of weeks at MWC 2018 maybe this might become the new RRP price. Only time will tell, these are the days of our lives.

    • In that case pay with coles credit card and be assure to get refund on price difference

  • +1

Worst flagship with that price tag in 2017. #bestscreenever

    • Really depends on what you look for

      • +1

Most ppl look on the screen first

        • It is literally how you interact with the phone. Not sure why everyone is okay with this hey

        • +1

          @OnlinePred:

Don't you interact with the phone by looking at the screen front on? That's how I do it. Maybe I've been doing it wrong?

        • @dazweeja: Sometimes for sure, sometimes it sits on my desk and I can't tilt my head on crazy angles required, also I sometimes view items with friends or my partner where neither of us can look at the screen front on and being the picky person I am, I notice this and it detracts from the quality of the phone greatly. Also seeing the phone on the table compared to other phones made me jealous at how great their screens were compared to mine.

        • @OnlinePred:

That's probably the best response I've read so far.

The thing is that if Google/LG stopped applying the polariser altogether, I think they'd sell way more phones. Given the choice between blue shift or not being able to read the screen with polarised sunglasses, I'm pretty sure people would ditch the blue shift in a heartbeat.

      • Value for money would be the obvious one. Getting what you paid for would be something else.

  • How good are jb when it comes to warranty support? Is it worth paying extra to get it from the Google store?

Edit : oh Google still have it at rrp. Not worth $350 extra.

    • Google warranty is always better. No hassles.
If that's worth $350 to you.

      • Isn't it the same 2 year warranty as per ACL though?

        • Of course, but Google direct are just so much easier to deal with.

"There's a problem with my phone. explain problem."
"Oh, sorry about that! We'll ship you a replacement and a box to return your old one."
          "Oh cool. Thanks."

All they need is a credit card to put a hold charge onto that gets removed once they see the old one.

        • Yea that's not a problem. It's when the phones are no longer being sold and you have an issue. Google will give you a refurb or sometimes a new model.
Plus 24/7 support, operators who know what they're talking about and don't give you the runaround.

Other retailers (jb, Telstra, Voda etc) give you a reduced value of the phone as refund or a cheaper alternative phone.

My brother bought a pixel xl from gumtree a year after it was released, no receipts or anything. He updated the phone through an ota update and the phone bricked itself somehow. I called google and luckily it was purchased through them, they didn't even make me go through any troubleshooting. They just sent me a new phone and got me to send the old one back.

    • I bought mine from jb and got it exchanged by Google support without any problems.

      • How did that work?

        • Just use the Chat support option in System Settings. They'll walk you through a few basic troubleshooting steps if necessary, then if the issue persists (in my case), they'll offer a RMA.

  • I dont think ive ever paid retail for an android phone, like ever. Always steeply discounted with great hardware, just lacking the polish of iOS apps.

    • The apps from big companies tend to be just as polished. I agree that the second tier apps can be lacking in the UI department compared to iOS but this has definitely improved since the Material Design guidelines were released.

      • +1

Yeh not snapchat, that app is (profanity) on android. Others too, twitters icon placement is a little better on iOS for example, especially for the larger phones.

        • Interesting. I've never understood why billion dollar companies can't make a decent app. Even if it cost a million - 4-5 top developers for a year - surely it's worth it when it's the way your customers interact with your product on a daily basis. I know that for a couple of years, Facebook had literally one guy working on their Android app.

  • Great price. I upgraded from Nexus 6p to the pixel 2 xl during the last sale 3 weeks ago. Paid $1099 (-7.5% gift card) for the phone with Google home mini.

Love the phone so far. Camera is bloody amazing. Dual front facing speakers. Blue shift non issue for me, as I only look at my phone straight on..?

The only annoying thing for me is the screen is very sensitive. So am still getting used to typing without accidentally switching the keyboard to numbers/symbols.

  • I've got the regular Pixel 2 and it's great. Have had 2 Samsung Galaxy's before this and they aren't close to the Pixel 2's speed and responsiveness. Fingerprint reader really is extremely fast and accurate.

    • One of the biggest bazels too.

      • yeah it is a bit, but after a bit of use it doesn't become an issue for me :)

      • +1

Biggest bezels = best sound quality.

Front facing speakers are unbeatable and it's a shame the industry has largely decided form is more important than function.

Same can be said about replaceable batteries and headphone jacks.

      • +1

One of the biggest overblown issues you mean. The phone is great.

        Source: I have one

  • Tempting deal, but not sure if I should wait for Pixel 3. My current phone is working fine but my switching addiction is kicking in. Was there trade-in program in Australia when Pixel 2 came out? I tried to search about it but see no info about Australia. If the possibility of trade-in program in aus when Pixel 3 came out is pretty high, I might just bite the bullet.

    • If your phone is working fine and you don't need it, just hold out dude.

I wonder how long Pixel 2 will be supported with updates………

My Nexus 6 doesn’t seem to qualify for Oreo ?

Oreo must need some super high specced phone to run, such is its android uberness

    • It's 3 years this time (October 2020).

      See: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/4457705

      • 2020 is also when Unlimited Google Photos storage ends for Pixel 2 owners.

        • It's not right my Unlimited Google Photos is showing upto 2021, it's 3 years from when you first activate your phone.

        • @vis: Weird. I'm pretty sure When I first checked it said 2020 for me, now it's showing up as 16/1/21 for some reason. I definitely activated my phone in December.

    • You have a Nexus.

Google may not make Oreo for the 6, but the magic in buying a Nexus is the community does.

You have no warranty anymore so you may aswell try out a few different ROMs and find one that suits you.

You'll find the user developed ROMs are faster/snappier than Google's anyway.

      http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/

    • I'm in the same boat, love the Nexus range and looking to Upgrade the N6 but not sure what to :(

      • Mate I am in the same boat. Every part of me wants to get a new phone but don't want to fork about 1000+. Lovve my nexus 6 but its not as fast as it used to be. What do you think about the Oneplus 5T?

  • +2

Just a nice heads up (mine just arrived), that it came with a Home Mini and earphones :)

    • Nice! - im assuming it was part of this deal? If so, i wasnt aware of a Home Mini being included. i just pulled the trigger on the 64gb Panda 2 XL using 5% off JB giftcards and with TRS will end up costing around $903

      • Yep same deal. I wasn't aware either. Same day delivery is pretty impressive.

      • what are jb 5% off giftcards?

    • Picked up mine in-store.
It's shrink wrapped with the mini and headphones.

      Invoice says pixel 2 only.

  • just got the pixel 2 xl 128gb, it came with the google speaker for $1199. not bad.

What is bad is the blue ass tint when not looking at it directly. debating whether to return it.

    • Yep, I got the blue tint too. Thing is, I probably would never have noticed it if I hadn't read so much about it before.

  • +1

Does this come with the free Google Home mini and headphones as the Boxing Day deal?
    Thanks!

  • So this is only to the 28th?

  • No click and collect option? Do we have to pay delivery or can we just buy this in store

    • I click and collected.

Your store may not have stock?

  • I'm having the same blue tint on this phone when I try to view it at certain angles. However I doubt anyone views their phone at these non conventional angles (unless they're using it as a shared screen among 20 people)

Same as going to the movies, you get a lesser experience viewing in the front seat at the corner seat. The movie is still good but you are just sitting at a bad spot

  • +1

Can also use rewardsmart.com.au (have an account via my work, not sure if anyone can sign up) and can purchase jbhifi giftcards with 7.5% discount. So roughly $75 off the 64gb and $90 off the 128gb

Any idea when this deal will last until?

    • i wanna know too

      • According to the rep, this sunday (28/01) will be the last day of the offer.

        • k thanks

        • Says on catalogue but hoping longer to clear stock?

  • Time to upgrade the Nexus 6P it seems….

    • Personally I think if you're content with the Nexus 6p and it isn't giving you issues, you might as well wait for pixel 3.

If mine hadn't died on me due to the battery issues, I would've gladly held back from upgrading. But of course, that's just my opinion.

I think the camera on the 6p is quite good also. Not quite as good as the pixel 2, but still up there.

  • Hope they take off $350 for pixel 2 .. XL is too big for me and high chance of having screen issues

  • Any chance of having price difference refunded for 2 Pixel 2 XL purchased on 23 Dec 2017 ?

    • I want to know this too….
If you have had price match once and then down again another $50 can you ask again…. Month from new?

      • So I rang my local and they asked manager about price match and they said just a bit too long and have already priced matched once so NO further price matching?
I felt 3….6month NO but a month and 2 days should be allowed?

Anyone had any luck getting more than one price match on an item in just over a month?

        • That's no good but I thought that's what they might say. Might give my local a try over the weekend and see what they say. Can't hurt to ask right ….

  • +1

I have been using a Pixel 2 XL for a month now. No issues with the phone at all. Great battery life, return home with 30%. Display isn't good as Note 8, but no blue tint or burn in unless you want to be picky. It was due to installing of polarising filter to help viewing with sunglasses. First time using a Google phone, appreciate the software and performance. Portrait mode is the best on any smart phone.

  • Damn. Expired already?

What are the chances of getting this deal today if i go into a jb store?

    • +1

I tried asking them today, no luck. Think it ended last night which is a shame.

      • spewing - gonna send the Mrs to try. Maybe her charm will rub off on the salesperson
