  • Hope you bought more than 1 at that price !

  • Karl Strauss Pale Ale Slab $20

Should be Karl Strewth, for Straya Day…

  • Bloke on the counter gave me the tip.

    I never get tips when I shop there… :(

    How much did you get?

    • +8

      The first inch.

      • Yeah that's good. I find if it's any more than that, it gets a bit too much

  • So was it labled at that price?

    • Labelled at $60 ish

      • So pot luck if certain stores have it discounted then I take it? Would have to scan at checkout

    • -1

      Nope…

      $55.90

      • Yeah, $60 ish

      • -1

$55.90 is a pretty good price anyway.

    • It should have had a reduced sticker to mark down to that price otherwise if they scanned the barcode on the box it would have sold at shelf price.

  • Unlike coopers, which is labeled "best after", DM has Karl Strewth Pale with a "best before 28 Jan 2018" date going at a discount.

I'll stay with Coopers, thanks all the same.

I Hedged my bets and bought both.

This is an American style Pale Ale so it has lots of fruity hops that decreases over time.
Coopers doesn't have that level, so can be stored much longer.
Both are bottle conditioned, I believe, so will show some minor increases in flavour complexity over time (which is why coopers says best after), but that will be much more subtle than the pintail losing flavour.

In any case, I think the dates are conservative, and product 6 months past date still drinks fine if it was stored ok.

      • user name checks out ;7)

        • -1

          it's short for 'musk eggs'

        • @jv: I thought it was more swilling keggs.

  • I assume a slab is 24 like it usually is/should be, or is it the sneaky 20 or 16?

  • Check on the other side of the box the Bb date as my store had the same with a best before 9/01/18. We sold them cheap before the best before date. The date wasn’t on the white sticker on the cases i checked but on the front in a black print

  • Tried my local Dans , guy laughed at me pretty much when I asked if they would scan at $20 :(

    • I assume your store has sold all that were close to date and new stock would be full price

      • Nope, look at the link
        I posted above

      • Guy told me they never discount near used by date beer and throw it out. Was Ballarat store. Before I went I checked online to see if stock was available and it said it was. I should have not asked the staff and just took a box up to the counter to scan.

        • We always discount when an item is close to best before date. He is correct to say we throw out but only once it passes the date. Even if u took the slab to check out it wouldn’t have scanned at $20. Glen Waverly store must have had a reduced sticker at $20 to get it to scan at that price…..should have been on the box but i cant tell by OP’s picture. If the sticker wasn’t on the box they shouldn’t be doing it like that.

        • @lindsaymt:

He said we never discount, we continue to sell it at normal price and when stock is left that has reached best before date we throw it out. I think he lied to me

        • I think he meant his store dont discount further and just sell at the discounted price head office sets which in this case is $55.90 (normal price is $79). Once the date passes they throw out

        • +1

          @lindsaymt:
So who has the 'authorit-ieeee' to override 'head office' on the day before it expires, and decide that getting $20 per case would ACTUALLY be better than binning it the next day (better for the store's bottom line, better for the punters, better for 'store loyalty', better for staff-morale, better for the enviramenmenment, ETC.) ?!?

The mere suggestion that an entire box of beer (of ANY quality) might be thrown in the bin simply because it is ONE DAY past the 'BB' on the box, brings many tears to my eyes.

  • The call centre rang around stores in QLD for me ,
and they are saying it usually sell at around $79 and that $55.90 is the reduced price .

    A likely story

    • The call centre is correct. Usual price is $79. The website has it at $55.90 which is reduced price. It also says on website that best before date is 30/1/18

      • Why was I told that the Ballarat store never discount near best before date beer and throw it out if it reaches best before date? I believe I was lied too

        • Not sure why this staff member has said it.

        • @lindsaymt:

Well I think its a problem if you have staff making up stuff and lying to customers. Maybe I should make a complaint

        • +1

for the dumpster divers in Ballarat….. they can get food and a beer now … all that's missing is a table, sommelier and waiter in car park….
can I lower my son into the dumpster and he passes stuff like beer and food out to me, or it's a no no as he's under age so can only pass food out to me?

        • Don’t do that to your poor son, he will be disappointed to find all emptied bottles.

        • @lindsaymt:

Because the staff did not discount them and drank them for themself?

  • Shame you only have one smart manager …

    Happy Public Holiday !
