You must be a white, middle-aged male atheist who aligns with the likes of Pauline Hanson in 'keeping Australia white' and is impervious to all forms of racism but happily dishes it out when he can.

      • Its clearly a joke

        • +4

Yes, it's obviously a lightweight and harmless food related joke. Gotta be able a laugh a little laugh - everything isn't totally serious and unfunny 24/7
@KK, cracking a dunny joke is completely normal with hot food. There are just as many ring of fire type jokes in the southern US with chilli eating contests etc it doesn't make anyone a racist. Really cheap shot playing that card. You just assumed their age, race, religious background and politics all on a totally lightweight food joke - so exactly who is biased in this situation? Might want to think about that.

        • +1

@King Tightarse: Yes, it was intended as a shitty joke.

        • +1

          @bdl:

I don't know if the guy who started this outfit is still running it, but Bala was the name of one of his sons, and da dhaba is a table, i think. So it's Bala's table.

I used to go to this place all the time years ago.
It was the best Indian place to my knowledge at the time.
Their main outlet was in … Elsternwick? Forget…

      • +7

Actually it means Bala's Dhaba. A dhaba is a roadside restaurant in India.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punjabi_dhaba

      • +1

They sold this place in 2008. But yes, He was the same man.
        RIP Him 2012
Now the family is out of this industry.
we are continuing the legacy of that man with very high respect of his knowledge and passion.

        • +1

Christ - he was only a young dude, from Nepal from memory.
          Sorry to hear that…

        • +1

@AngryChicken: yes he was not very old. ( bala's father)

    • Sorry guys but I found it hilarious :D

Guys lighten up, this is quintessential aussie banter.

ps.: For the record I'm brown and eat here a lot.

      • +2

ps.: For the record I'm brown and eat here a lot.

You didnt have to say that to justify it being humour.

Anyone with something between his/her ears can see it wa meant to be a joke. People hide behind the racist card at the drop of the hat these days sheeessh

  • Does the name mean something OP? I'm genuinely curious

    • Its mean "song of you bum"… joke, its a joke hot food/curry joke c'mon!:)

      • +2

lol. what have we become when we need to specify that it's a joke. seriously

        • +2

I know, but people have gone super-sensitive about it above so you know…

        • +1

@King Tightarse: meh. If people can't take a joke, screw them I say

        • +1

        • @Basslync: what?

        • +1

          @steff: meh

        • @steff: Banter is great in the right domain. But not when someone is trying to do business. I definitely see that you had the right spirit though.

      • username checks out

    • +3

      Its bala's roadside restaurant.

  • Hey OP - what about us with Kids - would you do a special for two adults and two kids?

    • No problem with that.
Kids under 5 free and over 5 $20.

      • +1

Thanks but I can't see my 7 and 8 year olds eating $20 worth. Great deal BTW for older kids.

  • Get it India!

  • +9

Looking at the menu, cant help but wonder - when did papadums become a 'course' by itself?! They're usually free, this is a bit ridiculous.

    • I think it's papadums + ( panipuri or canapes)

      • Yes.

    • Lol, your level of understanding is very high. Thank you any way for seeing it.

  • Youre not open today? How many spots do you have left? Will book tomorrow if still available.

    • Email me your details at [email protected] and i will book one for you. Or you can just leave msg on landline.

          Cool.

        • @hawk90h: Could you please send a confirmation reply to me by email? Im not sure whether "Cool" means that the table is booked.

  • What's the portion size going to be for this deal? Same as a-la-carte for main course or any different?

    • +1

Yes, Portion size is as usal. We dont compromise with our quality and reputation.

      • then its a good deal at this price

  • +1

There are so many places in Melbourne where you can get a 3 course meal for $10-15, anyday.

    • +1

Ok i will bite…. link please. Inidian food ? Does it include meat dishes. This deal is 4 course and includes a beer or glass of wine.

      • $10/veg plate - Delhi Rocks Nice reviews, great food, freshly cooked for cheap. Its a volume business for them, they are always packed, and there is a reason for that. I often eat here.

        $12/veg plate - $14/non-veg plate Delhi Streets

        • OK but that is one course. Their multi course deal is $35pp and did not have a drink. That place looks nice for a lunch but I don't think it has the right feel for a valentines dinner.

        • @cozmo: It is not 1 course. For $10 you get 3 different curries of your choice out of 6-7 that make every day. Free tea is included with the meal. I was strictly talking about delicious food pricing and not about restaurant ambience or atmosphere.

        • @paul11:

That's not a 3 course meal. That's just what you get from the food court at any shopping centre.

        • @cozmo: Oh really, Tell me which food court in which shopping center is giving me this much for $12.

        • @paul11:

Mmm all of them. 3 curries and rice is pretty standard for indian at a food court much like 3 dishs and fried rice for chinese. Not all presented as nice as the one you have shown. But Its still not a 3 course meal and your original comment was you can get 3-4 course meal at many places in Melbourne for 10-15.

        • @cozmo: the restaurants I mentioned above offer many extras such as desserts and appetizers for $2-3 each. Even if you buy a $10 plate, and spend $2-3 each on an appetizer and dessert, it becomes your 3 course meal for $15-16. Go to these restaurants and try yourself.

        • @paul11:

Ok.. i have looked and i saw a 3 course meal @ Delhi streets was 35pp twin share.

You just not compairing like for like. Im sure the two you have mentioned are great value for money and taste delicoius.

    • many people do it but most of them have little choice.
no offence to you personally (And with high respect to you), but think about their staff as well, or if they are doing everything by themself, and putting 14 to 18 hrs a day for work, is it fair for them?
This all price war thing hurts them a lot, and they are doing anything to survive.
      good luck for them.
but we dont think that way, if someone wants quality time and food, we serve them.
otherwise supermarkets are also selling curries for $2 when they are reduce to clear.

      • Are you telling us that your restaurant follows minimum wages guidelines and pays waiter, server , chef etc on that lines?

        • +1

that is why most of our staff works here from 3 to 15 years. how many times you see that?
