Trackpad on these is terrible. Also check the manufacturing date, there's a recall out due to fire concerns.

The reported touchpad issues were over 6 months ago and apparently fixed with a firmware update.

Plus, I've owned multiple ThinkPads over the past five years and mainly use the TrackPoint and/or a wireless mouse, which I assume most others would do also.

      • Fixed as much as they could. Still not nearly as accurate as a Macbook built in the last decade, unfortunately. :(

        • Fixed as much as they could.

Right, so you simply just don't like them and are trying to compare it to those on a MacBook.

        • @Lorindor: Yes, this is my own opinion as an owner of both.

    • Trackpad is perfect on mine

this or wait for the intel 8th gen (6th gen lenovo) would be better for standard office stuff & battery life?

    • would be better for standard office stuff & battery life?

I would recommend a mid-range Lenovo if it's going to be used for mainly office work, the X1 series is more suited towards business on the road-type use.

      • Yeah sorry it will be used on the road/plane/lounges quite a bit and will then connect to a USB-C dock when at office

        • What type of work if you don't mind me asking?

        • @Lorindor:
basically MS office/emails/webmail/outlook/pdf and perhaps the odd movie on the plane/hotel etc

        • @daft009:

Then yes, this laptop will excel at those tasks, and it's perfect for travel due to it's slim chassis and light materials.

        • @Lorindor:
thanks, so its around a ~$500-600 difference between the G5 (intel 7th gen) and the newly released G6 (intel 8th gen)…

does the newer CPU justify the price jump?

          @daft009:

If you are doing it to make money (e.g. work) then it's probably worth it for the better battery life + performance. Depreciation will make the price difference less painful, and time = money ;)

        • @daft009: Well not to me. I'd take this deal as there are so much more offered in this laptop than CPU.

        • @daft009: i5 8250u is 4 cores vs 2 cores on the 7200u. If you are someone that will utilise the CPU power especially in multithreading then get the newer gen.

I bought i7 8550 over the older 7500u for my new work laptop as I use 7 zip on a daily basis compressing and decompressing large files 300mb to over 5 GB, and the extra threads will speed things up dramatically for me.

@azukay: I'm conflicted on the G6, I normally try to buy the latest tech for longevity, but the reviews concerning the 8th Gen CPUs are not good, especially for a processor released in late last year.

Although, this may be something related to Lenovo or the X1 specifically, and not a reflection of the CPU itself.

@daft009: The difference depends on how much you value the different aspects of each, for example the laptop in this deal comes with a 256GB SSD, and Windows 10 Pro and a 3 year warranty, whereas the base-model G6 has a 128GB SSD and, Windows 10 Home and only 1 year of warranty.

But if you're only interested in the CPU performance, and willing to spend the extra ~$700, then go for it, but I personally don't think the jump is worth the price gap.

        • @Lorindor: aah yes, i missed the extra warranty bit.

SSD & CPU was all I had considered.

hmm, perhaps might stick to my current setup till EOFY sales

I don't see prices dropping on the G6 any time soon as it was just released, but if you are referring to the G5, I'm sure it's price will continue to drop.

What's your current setup? I'm looking to upgrade from an X250 which has served me well.

        • @Lorindor:

I've always used an AIO desktop for work and only a basic/budget ultrabook for travelling (acer S13 with intel 6th gen i5 currently).
However the AIO is now dead so thinking of a good laptop with a dock & ext monitor for the office which I then use for travelling too.

Will definitely go for the carbon, its now just a matter of when.

  • This is a very impressive price on this notebook. How the net price is coming to $1,310? And if anyone knows if the warranty is on site or back to the depot?

    • How the net price is coming to $1,310?

      $1,825 - 20% = $1,460 - $150 cashback = $1,310.

      • Thanks

  • Just found out the promotion casback is for commercial buyers only and the warranty is back to the depot. Despite this the deal is cheaper to what Lenovo can offer.

    • What defines a commercial buyer?

      • I read on Lenovo commercial that one has to provide ABN Number.
