Thanks I also got Red Cross $50/1500 pts

    • +1

      Cheers, updated

      • Is the Red Cross one done now? Can't seem to find it. And what are bonus rewards points? FF points? Sorry, new to this.

        • +1

Rewards points are whatever points you get when you earn points. Some people will earn Qantas or Velocity points, others will earn Membership Rewards points, depending on their card.

        • +3

@kerfuffle: I'm pretty sure it is only Amex membership rewards which can be transferred to a number of airlines and hotel programs including velocity but not Qantas. If the Amex card is enrolled in Qantas rewards program, to earn Qantas points, it will not get the offer.

        • @grasstown: That explains why the Red Cross wasn’t on my Velocity Escape Amex 👍🏻

        • @kerfuffle:

          Same here - can't see it :(

    • +1

Missed out on using that one last time easy points for a tax deduction

      • They usually include a note stating that the donor has accepted Amex points in exchange for the donation and so it not eligible for a tax deduction. Of course, whether or not you still try to claim it is up to you!

        • +2

It is a cashback from AMEX as far as red cross is concerned they got a 50 dollar donation

        • -1

@DaTa: Not quite - usually the terms require you to donate via a certain link which takes you to the 'Amex Campaign'. Red Cross know you are receiving an incentive in exchange for your donation (thus making it ineligible as a tax deduction) and mark it as such.

        • +1

          @whichtyler:

WRONG, you can donate via Red Cross' generic donation page here with your Amex, tell me where on that page does it say anyone paying with an AMEX is not entitled to points:

          https://donations.redcross.org.au/Donation/Create

        • -1

@robbo135: I never said you're not entitled to points, I said you're not entitled to a tax deduction. This is clearly outlined in the tax law - you can't claim a charitable donation as a deduction if you have received something material in return.

Charities usually fall over themselves to sell the deductibility of donations but Red Cross make it clear that donations made in response to Amex promotions are not deductible - you can see that here.

You may be able to avoid this warning and claim the bonus points by donating through the generic link but this doesn't change the legality of the deduction under the law.

        • @whichtyler:

Well my tax receipt says I've donated $50 and it doesn't state that I'm not entitled to a tax deduction. It also doesn't say which payment method I used to make the donation. I'm sure the ATO could find out what I used to donate the $50, but then they'd also need to link the fact that I received Amex points when I used my Amex. But for the sake of $50, I'm pretty sure the ATO have got bigger fish to fry like Australia's millionaires and billionaires who pay squat all tax by utilising "loopholes",

        • @whichtyler:
I get points with EVERY credit card I use.
By your logic, nothing I spend on my credit card is tax deductible… wrong.

        • @dangerdanger: What are you talking about? Why would the tax law about charitable donations have any bearing on your other purchases?

        • @whichtyler:
I donate to Salvation army with my credit card - I get points.
I buy stationery for 'work purposes' - I get points.

I'm pretty sure I'm entitled to them as tax deductions

        • @dangerdanger: The issue here is to do with the law on charitable donations i.e.payments to deductible gift recipients (registered charities etc.). It has nothing to do with stationery purchases or deductions for work expenses. You can only claim a charitable deduction on your income tax if you do not receive a material benefit or advantage as a result of your donation. If you make a $20 donation and get a sticker in exchange you're going to be fine. Likewise if you make a donation and receive 1 or 2 reward points per dollar, as you would with any other credit card purchase. The problem arises when you're getting 1500 points for a $50 donation. This is a material benefit, and as you've specifically activated the deal in order to get the points you're not going to be able to argue otherwise. Red Cross specifically state on their website that this is the case.

        • @whichtyler:
The Red Cross website is worded to suggest that all donations are not tax deductible, not just this current offer. Not true.

My Amex card gives 1.5 Qantas points, vs. my Mastercard that gives only 0.5QFF points. Is my Mastercard ok, but my Amex not? Where do you draw the line?

        • +1

Since there are doubts, based on the discussions here; and I myself being fairly ignorant on this topic, I went googling to see what the ATO position is. Here is what I found, so thought I'll share:

          According to this : https://www.ato.gov.au/non-profit/gifts-and-fundraising/clai…,
when a material benefit is received, it is considered a contribution, not a gift.

          Then, according to this: https://www.ato.gov.au/Non-profit/Gifts-and-fundraising/Fund…

For a contributor to claim a tax-deductible contribution, the benefit they receive must be:
          • no more than $150 and,
          • no more than 20% of the value of the contribution.

In this case, Amex gives 1500 points for $50. Will base calculation example on the Amex Essential card (since this is what I have). Even on the lowest valuation – i.e. cashback, the value of 1,500 pts is $11.12. This is 22.23% of $50, so ATO position on this would probably be: it is not a tax-deductible contribution.

Also, there is no mention that the material benefit has to come from the party that is receiving the contribution (in this case, Amex is providing the benefit, while Red Cross receives the entire donation). So for a safe interpretation, this is not tax-deductible (if on Amex Essential card).

        • @dangerdanger:
This simply isn't true. The Red Cross website makes it clear that most donations are tax deductible - they even have a tax donation calculator to help you work out what it's worth to you. The Amex campaign donation page contains this disclaimer which states that donations made in response to the bonus points campaign are not deductible.

You draw the line when you are accepting a material benefit or advantage. There isn't a clear figure because it depends upon the circumstances each time. There's plenty of case law if you're interested to see how it works. Part of it may be whether the benefit has any value to you. To get the bonus points here you have to activate the offer and so you're going to have a hard time arguing it's not a benefit.

    • The ninja is back!

      • +3

        didnt even see him coming…

        • That's what she said?

        • @nurries: you will have to ask her… :D

  • +2

With Crown Gifts I would try to hold off using it as long as possible until Crown has one of those spend $400 get $500 worth type deals.

    • In Melbourne they have Buy $400 gift card get $50 Kingpin Bowling/Laser Tag gift card which is an offer valid till end of March. There might be a new one in April, but you'd have to be quick given Amex offer ends 3/04/18. Unfortunately you can't split payments online so can't use multiple Amexs.

      • Here is the Crown deal if you are interested.

  • Short expiry on nearly all of them. A little disappointed by that. But can’t really complain.

    • +2

Most are online only. Not a very good selection unless you are desperate to over pay. I would save the offer and wait for a sale on those stores to stack with.

    • +1

"I'd like to complain but I can't complain."

      • Absolutely. Getting no discounts would be worth complaining about. :)

Amex credits have got worse and worse every year. Missing the $20 off $50 fashion offers and the spend $10 get $10 back style ones

    • +4

True this year has been the worst.
2 months down and not really one great offer, especially to top up opal 😄

    • Could that be in relative to the Ozbargain popularity. All offers getting flooded by multiple mmembers on one account, so for AMEX its not getting to all users.

      • Ozbargain members are a drop in the bucket. Amex are suffering from not being able to rort processing fees as hard, also why most (all?) banks have dropped amex sup cards.

        • I think it may also be due to the face that AMEX (Parent company) reported a quarterly loss for the first time in 26 years in Jan'18, so they are likely to be cut budgets on marketing and promotions.

    • Agree. I haven't used an Amex credit in months. Ive missed the good targeted ones too.

  • +4

anyone got a link to the red cross one?

  • cant seem to add supplement card for the above offer ie Iconic

    • If the supplemental card has a DIFFERENT number then you should be able to. Funnily enough, only Westpac and CBA does that same AMEX number practice and Westpac cards are going to die off in a few weeks to be replaced with proper AMEX sourced cards.

What card are you trying to use?

      • Tried it on another supp amex card with different number and say it is not eligible

        • Wow. Worked with my Amex Velocity Supp though.

  • My platinum edge has stopped receiving these offers totally. Anyone experienced that?

    • +1

Nope, they all appear on mine

  • Damnit.
..Just spent $300 at under armour yesterday ….

Would spending yesterday and registering today still eligible for the cash back ??
    (Wishful thinking )

    • +3

      No

      • I will have to buy more then…

        • +1

Buy again and return the old order.

        • +2

          return and rebuy …

        • Buy your way out!

        • @robb6014:
I have to hand in my ozbargain badge then….too lazy to go through the hassle.
          I will just buy MORE!

        • @lovepub: Disgrace.

  • Thanks OP.

  • +1

3.33 cents per point worth it for the Red Cross donation?

    • +1

      It's tax deductible …

      • -2

As per my comments above it is not technically tax deductible if you donate through the Amex link.

    • +1

      No

  • I've never shopped at any of those shops but I saved them to my card anyway due to FOMO

  • +1

it's a great cause and an incentive for you to donate

  • I know gift cards are supposed to be excluded for pottery barn, but does anyone know if you still get the credit for gift card purchases?

    • +2

I would assume that the usual 'Amex cannot tell if you purchased a Gift Card vs an actual Item' argument will work for Pottery Barn as well.

    • Yes you can as danielh has explained

    • Make sure the giftcard website is same as on the offer. These companies usually use an external company so u cant get the amex credits.

      • Guys, just purchased $100 William Sonoma gift card with my Amex card. Unfortunately the cash back did not seem to work. The bill came up as "Williams-Sonoma E-Gift".

  • Its not relevant to this topic but if I have Amex card and supplement Amex card. If I cancel the Main Amex card, will the supplement card be automatically-cancelled as well ?

  • +4

I was hoping the deal was for HP sauce

  • I am needing to chase up a credit from a past Amex rewards deal. Is anyone able to let me know how to do it. It is with a NAB issued AMEX account
    thanks

    • I had the same issue, did an online chat and they were very helpful, credit came in 2 days time. Mine is Amex issued so not sure if you have the same capability with Bank statement.

      • thank you will give it a try

  • +1

Did anyone else get a free $50 Uber Eats voucher a couple of weeks ago? That was nice.

    • Yep plus stacked with Amex's Uber welcome offer meant $60 of free food. I couldn't believe how well it worked.

  • Thanks OP.
I am interested in the Iconic reward.
Does anyone know if it can be stacked up with new member discount (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/325799)?

    Also, it says,
"Credit should appear on your billing statement within 5 business days from qualifying spend but may take up to 90 days from the offer end date."

In the worst case scenario where it will take longer than 40 days before the credit arrives (and assuming transaction happens today), does that mean that Westpac AMEX
holders won't get the credit because Westpac AMEX will shut down on 15 April?

    Thoughts anyone?

  • Does anyone know if paying using AMEX card but via Paypal will count ?

    • +4

No as it'll show up as via PayPal e.g. PayPal *OzBargain instead of OzBargain

  • Does anyone know when it says:

    C. Transactions that are not eligible
The following transactions are not eligible and will not count towards your spend for the purposes of the
    offer:
 transactions where you do not spend directly with the merchant (for example, if you buy the
    merchant’s goods through a third party department store);
     transactions processed through a third party payment processor;
 transactions that are subsequently cancelled or refunded.

On the 3rd last point - 'transactions processed through a third party payment processor' - would this include AfterPay?

    • Yes. As far as I know, you can't even add an Amex to Afterpay …

      • Oh very good point. Cheers! Didn't think of that!

        Cashrewards okay I presume?

        • No idea; I don't use that sorry

        • +1

Using Cashrewards doesn't affect Amex statement credits.

    • 3rd point basically means the transaction must be done directly with the merchant. No paypal, no afterpay no any other methods. The most traditional method of entering in your credit card details either on their website or payment instore.

  • don't need it

    • Awesome. Thanks for letting us know.

  • Crown Gifts Online: "We're sorry, this offer is no longer available, however you can find more great offers below."

  • whats a good amex card nowadays for bonus qff and cheap yearly? damn banks stopped all their amex's

  • The Red Cross offer is the best one of all time

  • Can the card be used to pay bills for the offer?

    • Which card ?

      • And which bills?

        • Home bills. AMEX card or typically used one.

        • +1

@PeeDee: Those bills have nothing to do with this Amex offer?

  • Has anyone try to buy from aveda? I have trouble trying to pay with Amex card. The payment page keep refreshing itself after I put in my card details.
