You get free room upgrades with the free tier registration. I'm a Gold member, there's no real extra perks.
I don't think this is correct - gold usually means free breakfast (sometimes full, sometimes EL breakfast which is still good) and Executive Lounge upgrade.
You don't get EL upgrades as a Blue member, but Gold at every property usually has a very high chance of Executive Lounge. Not having to worry about water/drinks and having a place to sit and enjoy snacks/dinner is one of the only reasons luxury hotels are worth it.
Marriott Gold and Hilton Gold are the best mid tier statuses you can have.
Weird, never got that with mine, just a deluxe upgrade and no breakfast. I ended up paying for an executive upgrade which I was extremely happy with, but just don't get everyone's hopes up as its not officially a perk on the site.
Wasn't mentioned yet, but the Macquarie Hilton Honors Visa grants you instant gold status without stays to begin with and many reports annual fees are waived for lifetime.

Yah, I have the same card. Something went wonky as I think I tiered up to Gold the same time I got the card and now I'm Diamond lol Not that it's much better, the premium internet is the only thing I've found useful

Just a heads up, you have to satisfy these conditions (2 stays or 4 nights) within 90 days after registering. So there's no point in registering now if you're not going to satisfy those conditions.
According to the terms and conditions.
Validity • Enroll from 1 January 2017 – 31 December 2017 and complete stays within 90 days of registration date with stay completions by 31 March 2018 if the last registration date is 31 Dec 2017).
If you didn't enrol last year, you would not be qualified for this Gold status upgrade?

I think that it's still valid until 30 June 2018. This might be a different link but still applies to Visa Signature/Infinite in Australia

Honestly, there's almost no difference. Just the premium wifi.
As a diamond member for the last couple of years I've found it to be quite good. I have received an upgraded room every time I have stayed, usually an executive king but once or twice I have received a large suite. I usually make use of executive lounge for afternoon tea and cocktails, a full breakfast in the main restaurant for free each morning for my wife and I, late checkout or early check-in, as well as the premium wifi. The service is usually quite good and I've stayed in Hilton, Curio and Conrads in Australia, Japan, Singapore as well as all over the USA and Europe.
@Coley: As a diamond member who dropped to gold, I've had a similar (positive) experience with both memberships. The only difference I've noticed is the wifi
It also gets old hearing them remind me that "as an diamond/gold member, you…" every time I interact with them and they give you a free latte at complimentary breakfast, etc lol.
I am planning on using this for a 9 night stay in NYC in June. Will the gold status come in use for this booking or the bookings after the first stay? Bit confused by this?
You will get the status after you stay. You need to earn it first lmao.
Wouldn't you qualify after the 4th night? That should provide 5 days of free breakfasts. Or you could check in and out of two different Hiltons in two consecutive nights and qualify for Gold by the third stay - in fact, that's probably what I would do. This is ozbargain so every USD counts.
