Seems like a good price and there hasn't been any good deals for a little while. It goes down if you buy multiple drives. For example four of them is AU$932.66 or $233.16 per drive

Meant to be Western Digital Red's inside them and this model is known to be shuckable

Seems to be a bit cheaper on Amazon US: https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-External-Desktop-Storage-STEL…

I'm in a regional area and it came to AU$243 delivered.

You have linked to a Seagate drive whereas my post is for Western Digital

        Hey $6 is $6.
        This is Ozbargain after all.

        • +6

I think most of us would pay the $6 for a WD drive over a Seagate drive.

        • -1

Seagate uses lossful for its data storage though

        • @deanylev:

Look at WD’s replacement policy. I’d rather Seagate anyday.

Oops, sorry, my bad. This is what I meant to link to: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LQQHLGC/

      Comes to $243.49 delivered.

      • Yeah, this was posted just recently as a bargain. Clearly a better deal.

God I wish we could get these about 30 dollars US cheaper again, considering I need 7 of the things for my NAS

  • Awesome thanks. I've been waiting for a decent deal for an 8tb non smr drive.

Awesome to get 4 for less than $1000 to save on tax. Even if they are wd white labels inside I'll be miles ahead compared to buying base drives in Australia…

Have correspondence with WD support to say that drives are supported by warranty even if removed from US. Issues would be handled by local or Asian support.

Not sure if anyone is paying attention, but my drives were delivered today via DHL (5 days from US). Running write and verify checks now before I shuck and start loading into my qnap ts-453. The devices are manufactured in Thailand, meaning they are likely 256mb Reds (or white label equivalents). Ill update once shucked with confirmation of HD model inside.

Not sure if I want to do a live upgrade or just copy my data off existing RAID5 (4x4TB HGST), and set up a new RAID5 with 4x8TB WD80EZAZ. Thinking it will take a lot longer to upgrade 4 disks one by one than to just copy data off, wipe NAS, load new empty disks in, copy data back…

      • Yeah with all the reports I've read lately about shucking disks being fake inside, I would definitely do all testing BEFORE shucking nowadays.

        • Yeah absolutely. The serial numbers indicate they are not fakes, and SMART data indicates brand new drives but sill best to be sure. SMART data can be faked apparently.

Also good idea to shuck very carefully, as per conversation with WDC support below.

Thank you for your continued response and we appreciate your efforts in resolving the concern.

A new WD easystore portable defective drive purchased from Bestbuy US can be replaced from Australia. You need not to ship the defective drive back to US BestBuy.

However, please make sure to keep a proof of purchase of the drive so that you can provide it to us if needed during replacement.

If you have any further questions, please reply to this email and we will be happy to assist you further.

          Sincerely,
          Bruce

  • I purchased one hdd before Easter and it just turned up.

Hooked it up to the PC and ran HD Sentinel on it.

It says its running a WD80EZAZ-11TDBA0 5400 OEM hdd inside it which are not WD RED hdd's.

    sad face :(

    • I'm struggling to find the information to confirm this right at the moment but my understanding is

      1. It was a misnomer for me to refer to them as 'WD Reds' as they are a white label
      2. They are virtually the same as the Reds

      edit

      Found it https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/6yimv9/are_the…

Possibly the white labels have double the cache of the standard reds too? 256 vs 128. Don't hold me to that one

      • Edit : I think on that reddit page, theyre talkin about a WD80EMAZ, the one i shucked today is a WD80EZAZ. Slightly different part numbers.

Regarding it supporting TLER for use in a NAS, I'm hoping that is the case, just trying to confirm that myself by using smartctl utility, but the damn USB controller is not playing ball. I will have to install inside my PC tomorrow and try again.

        • Ahh I see what you mean, sorry for not having looked closer.

Starting to feel a little worried and admittedly out of my depth. If the TLER can be manually enabled, as per the comment in this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/7fc2ti/8tb_wd_…, do you think that can be done on drives that are already in use and with data on them? Please say yes 0_o

If it isn't clear I also got 4x WD80EZAZ-11TDBA0 myself.

Goddamn it, I held off on buying drives and a NAS for so long and tried to make it easy for myself and I still may have stuffed it up. I'm spewing the 4xHGST 8tb drives I bought before the EasyStores were actually refurbs with no warranty.

Prediction - I'm going to lose the good GB/$ ratio I had by having to buy another 4x 8tb ASAP, copying my data onto those and then unshucking these 'whites' and trying to flog them off at a similar price to what I bought them with the proof of purchase as some assurance to the buyer/s that they haven't been thrashed. I feel a stress headache coming on

  • Just so others are aware, I tried smartcontrol utils on my WD80EZAZ hdd and it doesn't seem to have TLER enabled, which is a feature desirable to have in hdd's for use in NAS storage systems.
Use at your own risk in NAS storage systems.
Probably better off as just a standalone backup hdd.

  • Anyone having issues with getting these WD80EZAZ drives to initialize? I tried the HGST SATA molex trick talked about on various forums and just cannot get the damn thing to work?!
