  • Just signed up. They seemed to accidentally have given me 40GB instead of 30GB. Not complaining :)

    • +13

Probably previous plans credit on top during the cross over.

    • it takes few billing cycles and gets fixed, happened to me when on the 12Gb plan, was 17GB for 2 billing cycles then was fixed.

    • Sign up/recontract to $40 and above My Plan Plus 12M SIM Only plans to receive double the standard data inclusion for 24 months.

So i am confused. Its a 12 month SIM only contract no?

      • Contract is 12 months but the double data will apply for up to 24 months. After that it goes back to 15gb

  • Thanks, managed to cancel my order for $40/month for 20GB that I placed just yesterday… Bonus 10GB!!!

    • Hi iceychow how did you get them to change ure plan. I have spoken to 6 Optus team they don’t want to help me. I signed up less than 24hrs to $40 20gb. Now there is a new offer I can change it but there is a cancellation fee 😡

      • Currently in live chat, didn't sign up to new 30GB plan yet in case they double charged me.
Optus website says I'm now on the $40 a month, with 25GB(?) meaning my 'cancelled' plan is now active 😡😡😡.
I contacted live chat prior to my service being activated, my live chat last night said:

        Rowen • 00:39 AM
I have successfully cancelled the order for you. You can now go ahead and place the new order for the $40/month plan.

Surely they can top up my account with 10GB now 😭

        edit

I don't see a note that the order was cancelled but no worries… I will be cancelling the order for you now.

asked and they said no cancellation fees or other expenses.

  • +3

    Can you stack student discount?

    • +5

yes, it stacked. $36 for 30GB, not bad

      • How? The Mrs was told she cldn't.

        • +3

Made the order online through this

        • @djprima: but that's for the 20gb offer, not the 30gb…
Or do you just get the code from there and then sign for the 30gb?

        • +1

@Batboy: scroll down else try online chat :)

        • +1

@Batboy: No, see by yourself. There's no more 20gb offer, all updated to double data

        • @tonester , @djprima: Wasn't showing on my phone. Had to use the desktop . Cheers:)

  • +6

thanks OP - went to Optus yesterday to sort out new SIM plan, they were busy and I got sick of waiting and walked out. Excellent timing!

  • Probably obvious but just in case… If you are on the old $40 per month with friends and family discount (25% off/$30 per month) - you will lose that discount!

Now just weighing up if I want to spend $10 more for double data when I barely reach by current 12GB

    • +7

If you don’t need it what’s there to think? Keep saving $10 :)

      • Considering the increased and more reliable mobile data over using my phone on Wifi at home which can suck sometimes.

    • Yeah I only need 15 if that and no international minutes, wonder if they'll give me a 20 per month contract….

    • Does the friends and family discount continue beyond the 12month period?

      • For 24mths I think even though its a 12 month plan

    • save the $10…im on the same deal except $30/15gb…with unmetered google music and Netflix/Stan, i really don't need anything more.

  • +19

Offerring more data is a trend in 2018, in reality we don’t use all the data but paying more.

    • +2

I don't pay more (always seems to be $40 plan for 12 months BYO), I pay the same but they stitch me up for another 12 months, which I guess is their goal anyway

    • That is true, 30 gb is a lot for a standard user. I wanted to get a plan for myself and my brother, so I got the $40-reduced to 36 due to 5% student discount(30gb) and the $30-reduced to 27 for the student discount(3gb). Now we can pool our data together with Optus and both get half of 33 gb each (16.5 gb). Turns out to be a good deal.

  • If you’re already on a sim plan with them you will have to pay a dammed cancellation fee…

    • +5

only if it has a handset is there a cancellation fee, with BYO (SIM only) plans in the past they just renew and you are set to go for another 12 months.

      • +1

Might just be the person I spoke to but I was told it was the other way around

        • I was told there is a cancellation fee also on my BYO Sim plan.

      • is that what it says in the critical information summary pdf? The last time I read it and talked with an agent, they said i would have to pay the remaining fee for the plan. so if you got 11 months left, then it will be 9.99 * 11 = $109.89

        i just read it.

        Cancellation fees

The maximum cancellation fee for this plan is $240 which will
reduce each month of your contract term.

        Plus if you cancel
your mobile plan, you’ll also have to pay any remaining payments
for your phone in full if you have chosen a repayment option.

        Plan changes

You can change your plan during your contract term to another
12M SIM Only (Online) plan provided you move to a plan with
        a higher monthly access fee.

        You cannot change your plan
during the contract term to a plan with the same or lower
monthly access fee. If you change your plan during your contract
        term a fee may apply.

        • well got onto optus, i have 7 months left on $40 plan , asked usually they just upgrade, they said if 2-3 months left then they do and no penalty, 7 months i would need to pay about $80 cancellation, BUT move to higher price plan no fees, so i went with the $50 60 gb plan as the cancellation fee covers the $10 extra each month and i get 60gb ……

what to do with 60 gb, seems the $50 plan does netflix streaming on handset but not datashare sims ….. with 60gb i can youtube i guess.

feel like i’ve signed up for $10 more per month for data i will. never use , 60gb ……
i can see for some users it would replace their adsl at home ….. mirror / cast SD netflix onto TV and tether pc for other stuff ….. and dump the $60 pm broadband.

i still need broadband for xbox games …. lots of updates or new games are 50gb downloads.

$60 for 100gb ……unless in prison who has enough time to use 100gb on a phone.

  • Now what are the chances of Telstra bringing out something to match this…

    • +30

Give them a few years, they'll catch up..

      • Telstra seems to follow rather than lead in these deals, so they will catch up, but they will also still charger for data share sim which they never offer as free.

        • +1

          Nether do Optus

        • @Pinchy: My Optus data sim was $5 to purchase with no ongoing monthly - but I quit and went to Telstra because I was sick of their inhouse marketing cold calls. No regrets.

        • I managed to get 3 GB data put on my $5 per month data sim as part of the most recent Telstra loyalty bonus, so it ends up being worth something at least.

        • +2

          @DrC:

I have this as well (Optus data share SIM for no on-going cost), but it is only for grandfather plans. They no longer offer this.

        • At least Telstra offer data share SIMs (albeit at ongoing $5/month) - neither Optus or Vodafone offer them anymore.

Both Optus & Vodafone want $15/month/24months and will add 3GB to your pool, or $15/month to month for $2GB - http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/mobile-broadband/data… or
          https://www.vodafone.com.au/mobile-broadband/plans/state/sim

        • I think it's the premium they charge for better network coverage.

        • it’s advertised on the website still as current offer, so they still sell the sim data share.

      • -5

Given Optus use dial up modems for their backhaul, I'm not sure Telstra will be too concerned.

  • +5

first time with the optus chat - went very well and fast - should all be in place in 24 hours - going from 3 gig for 60 bucks to 30 gig for 40 - very happy

    • +2

3 gb for 60..? who were you with? that's hideous value..

      • +1

yes - it was an old plan with Iphone 6 plus included - i just let it run into a month by month one until a deal like this popped up.

        • +8

Damn son you could've switched to a month to month and paid less in the mean time.

    • +1

I was on $40 for 500mb and was spewing

    • Dud I almost feel bad for you that is horrid

  • bloody hell, i literally signed up to the student 36gb 20gb plan on the weekend!

reckon there's any chance optus will let me "upgrade" to this 30gb plan instead?

    • To update on my own situation, they are playing real hardball. Live chat + supervisor wouldn't budge at all and told me to call 1300 300 562. Been on the phone for a while now but keep getting told the same thing…

EDIT - and again told for the third time that I would incur a recontract fee ($220) if i wanted to move to the 30gb plan. Going to have to leave sleeping dogs lie for the time being. Would be curious if Optus actually charged me the recontract fee if I recontracted to the 30gb plan online.

      • is there a cooling off period in the terms and conditions?

        • +1

Probably no cooling off period if the customer initiates the contract.

        • @KaptnKaos: no cooling off because I initiated the contract unfortunately.

      • Yeah, Optus won't budge if you want to transfer to same plan with higher data limit. If you are, however, willing to upgrade the plan, they are happy to do so.

  • +1

Tbh the 60 bucks plan is even better than my old 70 bucks Moblie broadband, which has 100G/140G as well. However, I don't find the 30GB for 40 a good value as that's too much for a month for most of us. The other day I managed to get 15GB for 30 thru online chat but didn't sign it cuz I still have a couple prepay sims.

  • +2

great deal, shame about the crap network though. stick to telstra!

  • Do you lose half the data after 12 months?

    • +1

nah, that's when you re-contract onto something better.

      • +1

Just had a chat with the optus team, looks like double data is for 24 months. Still ok I guess.

        • receive double the standard data inclusion for 24 months

  • +2

The deal come very close to my current "SPECIAL BUNDLE"

My current combination of two lines at 18.75 + 100G data @ 52.5 give me 146G for $90. I don't get international minutes but don't use that anyway. Been on this for a few months now and serious thinking of canceling my ADSL all together.

    The bad:
Optus customer services and billing are really crap and there is not much the stores can help. I would say much worse thab Vodafone. So prepare for a shock.

Also Optus network is really patchy. I have good reception in City but many area I find weak/blind spots. Their 3.5G usable in certain area though, unlike Vodafone which has a very good 4G but once you drop out of 4G you got no connection.

    The good:
Those who say "I don't use that much" is because you don't use Video unless you have a hotspot. My usage behavior totally change after I have these data and I watch videos where ever I want. I will never go back to a small data plan now. Its Apple and Orange.

If you work out you have enough data on your mobile, you can save extra by cancelling you landline and ADSL. Remember to budget that in…..

    • +1

Absolutely horrorshow customer support, coupled with the unsolicited marketing calls that reoccurred every few months was enough to get me away from Optus. TIO stepped in and axed my contract without paying out my phone. Telstra is slightly more expensive, but the bad from Optus is really, really bad!

      • +2

Optus is simply too unbearable to put up with this.

Girlfriend had same problem with marketing calls after signing up for a data sim. The staff apparently sell on numbers to external sources

        • +1

They have this method where they dial multiple numbers at once and then hang up on everyone except who picks up first. This often gets repeated multiple days in a row. Absolutely unforgiveable

    • -1

sorry Orange was bought out by 3 and 3 by vodafone.

Apple doesn't have it's own telecommunication services in Australia.

    • I was on optus 2 years ago, switched to vodaphone (kogan). My experience with the vodaphone network is shocking. It's all over the place. At times I might have full reception showing, but can't even load a webpage. Other times ill have no service, when my mate standing right next to me on the same plan, has 4 bars.

  • -3

Mobile tv streaming …..think not on byo sim only plans …was removed last year ….music you get spotify not apple music ….

    • INCLUDED ENTERTAINMENT

      • MOBILE TV STREAMING
      • no free. netflix on $40 byo handset sim only plan, checked online chat and in store , might be optus tv with programs nobody’s wants to watch ,

if i also get a handset, the plan then includes netflix not coming off the data plan allowance, but then it’s not $40 anymore.

they used to do netflix on $40 sim only but removed it.

        • Why would the online chat agent be more informed than what's written in plain sight on the website?

When I click on the $40 BYO deal and proceed to sign up, it says this pack is included at $0 cost.

          MOBILE TV STREAMING
Whether at home or on the go with Mobile TV streaming, you can now stream data free Netflix, Stan, ABC KIDS and more on selected plans.

    • Looks like added back. I'm not sure if active on current plans, or only re-contracting ones with this deal though.

    • What are you trying to say

  • +1

Do you get free streaming of Spotify though and Facebook/Social media on this though? 30GB would go pretty quickly streaming music? (Apologies if already answered, or in terms and conditions)

    • Spotify - yes
      Facebook/Social media - no

    • Yes spotify doesnt come of the data limit

    • why do people neg on a simple question - sheesh! when i asked, the description wasn't updated to include music streaming.

      • Maybe it's because it was one simple click onto the Optus link? idk. OzB gon OzB

      • sorry, i didn't neg you, but the op always included it

      • to trigger you

      • yeah, some tend to neg without including a reason or explantion, often assumes others have the same insight into products they do.
Got negged 9 times once because I asked if the star wars set was DVD or Blu-ray ….. seems those in the know knew it was a book set, didn't say it in the description, but they must have assumed I go to Comicon and had their insight.

  • My cycle started 2 days ago, If I was to contract to this would I owe extra?
My previous contracted expired 5 months ago.

    • +1

No, this month would just be calculated pro-rata

  • Thanks OP. Was paying $36 a month (with student discount) for 8GB a month and no Optus Sport. Now paying the same for 30GB and Optus Sport for free :D

  • +2

Better than that unlimited data package.

  • I upgraded my sim plan online yesterday to $50 for 30 gb.

Tried getting in contact with optus today to change it to the 50 for 60GB.. and the guy insisted I need to pay $200 cancellation. Ridiculous. He then suggested that the change I made yesterday should incur $200 cancellation too. Yeh, right.

I've tried chatting to other representatives but the chat keeps getting disconnected!

    • Can't you just use the recontract option online if you're on a sim only plan anyway? I thought cancellation/exit fees are only incurred if you're paying a handset off too.

      • Yeah, I thought so too. I just went through their website and ordered it.. let's see what happened.

        • Good luck, keen to know if it works!

        • @unco: I tried to recontract and they want to charge me $75 contract change fee. Told them to shove it. Not using all my data now anyway.

  • yea don't give existing customers free international calls or roaming on these byo plans, force them to sign up for new phone every 2 years, to get all these bonuses.

    • +2

Sign up/recontract to $40 and above My Plan Plus 12M SIM Only plans to receive double the standard data inclusion for 24 months.

    • I have free international on BYO, international roaming ….. expensive with most carriers except voda who have special deal that you can add when overseas.

      • I got 10days a month free roaming pass on my postpaid plan, the newer plans with phone comes with either 1gb or 1.5gb a month free roaming data.

  • In terms of coverage, which one is better?

    • none - they're all the same with optus :)

  • I'm already on this plan last time it was posted but it's about to expire. What's the best course of action now ?

  • +1

Optus has pathetic post sales service. I was so fed up that I approached the Ombudsman and got out of the contract. It’s that bad!

    • i had opposite experience , telstra was bad moved back to optus …. probabaly case by case and what issues are etc.

telstra kept getting billing wrong for me.
