    NICE DEAL!

My only hesitation is that there is likely to be a significant update this year after 8 years of very incremental changes. I am also crossing all fingers and toes for an iPad mini update as I prefer that form factor.

      • The mini has been discontinued because the production cost of the basic iPad has dropped through the floor. Anyone who uses the iPad for anything other than an eBook doesn't want such a tiny screen and resolution.

In a couple of years, you might see a tablet that folds into the mini size, or a phone that folds out into a tablet around the size of a mini (probably larger), but that's about it. Look for Apple to attempt to do that with MicroLED tech, otherwise OLED.

There likely won't be a major refresh on the iPad Pro until they have a pretty stable AR offering, as it's already got all the bells and whistles of an iPhone X with a 120 Hz screen to boot.

        • +3

Yep, I agree that the iPad mini will go - phones are getting bigger and full-size tablets are getting thinner and lighter. The space for a small tablet like the iPad mini is shrinking every day.

And yes, I agree that there won't be a major refresh on the iPad Pro, the 2017 model was a pretty big refresh with them introducing a new chip with markedly better performance than the 2015 iPad Pro (12.9"/9.7" models) and 120 Hz screens, along with the new 10.5" form factor. Having owned the 12.9" iPad previously, I find the 10.5" a much better form factor.

"Anyone who uses the iPad for anything other than an eBook doesn't want such a tiny screen and resolution"

I really wish people wouldn't project their own reasoning onto others.

I use my iPad mini -all- the time. It's a great size for on the train, or in bed, reading reddit, news, replying to postings on forums, taking to lectures etc.
Easy to take with me to the doctors - it's such a great size.

        • @SirDale: compared to a 9.7" or 10.5" device, which are all something you can tuck into a small bag, it really isn't.

Weight it what matters more, and as performance requirements and expectations ramp up along with battery life, trying to conform to the the 7.9" becomes an expensive battle more akin to a smart phone, and thus priced similarly as well.

You're in a very niche space at that point, as the vast majority of people use tablets for streaming video and light browsing.

        • @jasswolf:

When someone clearly refutes your original point, just move on to another.

          Do you do this often?

        • @SirDale: um, how does stating that the larger tablets now weigh little more than the mini, provide a genuine step-up from larger mobile phones and are now as affordable at the price point for the mini equate to changing the subject?

Most people who bought the mini did so because it was a cheap entry model, not because they appreciated the size. The fact that the current iPad undercut the mini 4 should speak volumes about where Apple sees the product.

You are very much in the minority here, and if you really want an updated small tablet, consider the Fire HD 8 or the Kindle Oasis from Amazon, as it is typically pitched as an e-reader or a budget device, neither of which Apple really interest themselves in.

The iPad Mini has been on track to be discontinued for some time, much like the iPad Air has been due to the affordability of larger screens and the lighter components. To pack similar hardware into a smaller device will not make for an affordable device, nor will it have the kind of battery life and performance that people have come to expect due to the thermal conditions of the 8" form factor.

A device in the future may get the Mini badge from Apple, but it will likely be a small tablet that folds out into a larger one through flexible OLED/MicroLED technology, something Apple is heavily invested in along with many other companies. This allows for that thicker device category, as well as a means to ramp up performance when unfolded.

I can't outline this any clearer for you, so if your only response is that I am trying to win an argument through misdirection, please don't reply.

          Because you claimed…

"Anyone who uses the iPad for anything other than an eBook doesn't want such a tiny screen and resolution"

which I refuted with my own personal experience. Nothing more than that. Clearly you don't want to acknowledge that you were wrong on this point.

…and then you went to talk about topics that I said nothing about.

"I can't outline this any clearer for you, so if your only response is that I am trying to win an argument through misdirection, please don't reply."

Oh, sorry! I wish I had read your entire thesis before posting.

        • @SirDale: forgive me, I didn't clarify my general statement as not being utterly absolute.

          Go away.

The other part to add to this is that delivery for this item is "Estimated between Thu. 12 Apr. and Fri. 11 May" which means even greater chance something will be announced before you get it!

        • Imagine the pain of that happening!

        • thanks!

thats almost 2 months on the upper end…thats stupid. Even greater chance of finding another deal better before ur ipad arrives.

      • I'm with you, I prefer this size as it fits nicely in my bag. However, I agree with the others it is likely to die out. As the bigger one has got lighter and lighter it is really only the size of the device itself that is the issue. Reportedly the next generation will get rid of the home button, like the iPhone X. This will give a nice upgrade to the usable screen.

Reportedly the next generation will get rid of the home button, like the iPhone X

Oh dear. I was looking to buy one for my elderly mum but there's no way she'll get used to the swipe gestures of the X. She understands the button but will get confused when it's gone.

        • +2

@lostn: I would presume that the lower end ones will keep the buttons for, at least, a little while longer.

        • -1

@try2bhelpful: Using the iPhone X at Optus store, I myself triggered the gestures by accident when I simply wanted to swipe to scroll. I think it's a bad idea.

I think if you want to go bezelless, add an invisible home button on the bottom where it normally is, and only activates if you press it hard enough. Though I would prefer more top and bottom bezel to get rid of the notch at the top, and leave room for an oval shaped button. Or just on screen buttons. But Apple would never do that…

        • @lostn: Haven't played much with the Iphone X, there are probably ways to tailor the gestures.

        • +1

@lostn: Don’t worry. In accessibility you can create a floating virtual home button.

Rumour is that the next iPad will be basically borderless. It’ll also be a lot more expensive than this.

  • I just bought 3

Sochi is over, they're not handing out any more medals

Apparently, there is a keynote confirmed for Mar 27th. May help make an informed decision if at all they do come up with cheaper iPads. iPhone SE 2 or iPhone X SE rumoured as well.

Not according to the website: http://wheniskeynote.com/

    • -3

Cheaper iPads, doubt it with the current exchange rate.

Also the new version will never be cheaper (there will also be able to justify the price with a minor spec bum) and the old ones will be $100 cheaper or phased out completely.

  • It says that it's a Direct Import. Does that mean the item wouldn't be covered under local warranty? Or is that only for "international models"?

Looking at their phones on sale too.

    • Grey import has one year, Australian Stock has two

      • Warranty on grey import is from seller only. Apple Australia offers no warranty at all on Greg imported phones or iPads

        • +1

Not exactly, at least the iPhone has the global warranty. —->OK, this may not be true but I have a friend get iPhone bought from US serviced in Australia. Maybe it is just case by case.

        • @maxdba:
Some level of discretion i believe can be applied but i have seen first hand them refuse to help because the device was not purchased in Aus (grey import)

        • What if someone other than Greg imports them though?

        • @jimbobaus: Try different store or different staff.

    • Apples warranty is worldwide isn’t it? Just take it to an Apple Store or post it in.

      • -1

Apple warranty is worldwide on macs and MacBooks only.
iPads, iPhone and watch warranty is local only.
If you buy this iPad you will zero warranty from Apple Australia.

Not true I exchanged my iPhone in Paris 2 years ago

        • @tightm8:
          Lucky you.

Here is the parts of the warranty i am referring too:
Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its authorised distributors originally sold the Apple product.

It is also interesting to check apples website from other countries:
for example under the statement: Overseas repair or replacement
          Australia: Yes
          Usa: Yes
          China: No
          Japan: No
          Singapore: No
          United Kingdom: Yes
In every case above it used the disclaimer about restricting service to country that sold the product.

So i guess it also depends on the country the device is being sourced from.

We bought an Apple Watch in Japan, We bought apple care as we were told that it made the warranty international. When it played up and we went to Apple, they refused to replace/repair it. We spent weeks on the phone with apple care and in the end (after almost 2 months) we conceded they would not be able to service it. (apple did give us a voucher as an apology)

  • next challenge is to find a cheap Apple Pencil.

    • What about Apple Pencil 2 with buttons?

    • Gumtree perhaps?

  • Did they just increase the price? I can only get this for $740

    • Yep :( I had it in cart and was procrastinating on whether to bite.

  • +1

One to two month delivery time from HK really sucks. They are basically taking pre-order then use some cheap shipping option instead of air parcel to save the cost.

  • Can’t wait for the new iPad mini to come out, it’s the perfect size.

  • Managed to grab the space grey 64GB + 4g for $700! Also, I wouldn't trust their shipping estimate… I placed my order three days ago and got it today.

    • Yep, same here! I got the 64GB WiFi. I don't know why their estimates are so far forward.

    • Three days or weeks?
