The ASUS Zenbook Flip post was a popular one. For those who want a dedicated graphics card to do a bit of medium-settings gaming (subjective), then there is the ASUS Zenbook UX430UN with Pascal-based MX150 with 2GB GDDR5 memory. Note that it is Intel core i5, whereas the Zenbook Flip deal was an i7 offer. Also this is a non-touch version.

  • Intel Core™ i5-8250U
  • 16GB LPDDR3 Memory
  • 256GB SATA3 M.2 SSD
  • 14" Non-touch Display
  • Intel UHD Graphics 620
  • Windows 10 Pro (64bit)

I really, really liked this ultrabook on paper…

However having read actual owner reviews here and feedback here I am now reluctant. There seems to be issues with the GPU throttling at 74 degrees which makes it nearly unusable for sustained usage. Both Software(Bios, intel XTU, MSI afterburner etc) and hardware solution (heat pads) were trialled but no one seems to have found a good answer to working around this limitation. Comparatively, the mi book which also has mx150, doesn't throttle until 92 degrees and the lenovo 720s at 94 degrees. To be fair, the HP Envy 13 which has similar specs and size also have a similar issue.

    • Looks like yet another notebook that's using a single fan and fin stack to try and cool a quad-core CPU and a dedicated GPU. Frustrating. Not as bad as some I've seen but still not great.

My older Zenbook UX303LN (i5-4210U, 840M DDR3) uses two fans and two heatsinks, one fan for the CPU, one fan for the GPU. It's not ideal still as they do share one heatpipe, but it also allows the CPU and GPU to go up to 92°C and maintain high turbo speeds rather than throttling at 73°C. Mine is also probably due for a re-paste so it likely runs a bit hotter than it needs to.

Still waiting for a good successor laptop in this size and weight class. I'd also personally prefer a touchscreen.

    • Are we talking deg celsius or Fahrenheit ??

It might be a good computer, but I won't call it a 'gaming computer'.

      Perfect gaming laptop for Minesweeper

  • I bought one at $1343 last week after 20% off.
Still pretty good price but I can't see why it's now $50 more in a week.

    • Can you link to the one you bought for $50 less? Is it the same seller (Shopping Express Clearance)?

  • I got the UX 430 UQ version for $1169 with 20% off. Very happy with it. No issues playing Battlefield 1. Does get a bit hot though, but that's expected and all reviews suggest thia happening under load.

  • I had an Asus ux303 zenbook a couple years ago and back then the zenbooks seemed plagued with a cracking hinge problem… Wondering if new zenbooks still have this problem?
