I kept breaking our dishes, so my wife bought one of these sets a few months ago. I haven't broken or chipped any yet, so it's a good start.

    • Keep your receipt as they replace any if you break them, I think it's within the 12 months warranty but haven't read the terms for a while.

      • +1

wow I will have to look into this as we have them and my wife keeps breaking them. she finds them more slippery and one drop and bang they go into a million pieces !! Be fun returning what's left after they break as I have seen a piece bigger than around 1cm once they break.

Oh ikea have simular ones for .69 a piece, we have found them to be the same as these AKA no more or less strong.

Corelle Brands LLC will replace any item of Corelle® Vitrelle® glass dinnerware that should crack, break or chip within THREE YEARS

        But then

This warranty does not cover accidental breakage.
        https://www.worldkitchen.com.au/faqs-corelle.html#q3

It does not cover damage resulting from misuse, negligence, accidental breakage or attempted repair.
        https://www.worldkitchen.com.au/warranty-vitrelle.html

So I don't really know what breakage they cover.
I have never had a plate break while it was sitting in my drawer.

        • So if you intentionally break it then its covered but if it was an accident then not covered ???

        • @vanleeuwen:

No because breaking it intentionally would be misuse

    • +1

they do break, but needs to be dropped onto tile floor at the right angle, I own a set and love the plates.

  • Any feedback on how these actually perform in the microwave ie. do these get super burning hot?

    • Yep…literally had this problem warming my breakfast this morning :(

      • +1

        What did you have?

        • +4

          Bacon & egg wrap

        • +1

@Mzrshy: Thanks for letting us know.

    • +4

      Place in freezer beforehand

    • +2

They don't get any hotter than other dinnerware I've used. Just use some oven mitts or something. They'll be cool enough to touch in 30 seconds, so you could just wait a bit.

    • +8

The microwave doesn't make plates hot.

Your food gets hot which makes the plate get hot.

    • it didn't say microwavable anywhere

some claim it blows up in microwave , or a minute after taken out from microwave

    • No. They are glass. Melamine, a common plastic derived from wood fibre, is the material the gets hot in a microwave.

    • +2

I never found my correlles getting hot from the microwave. Lots of my kids plastic plates tend to get got from it, but the correlles just get warm from the food in it.

Stopped buying Corelle when they swapped mugs for cups.

Interestingly the box says “made in USA” and the bottom of the mug says “made in China”.

    • +12

The box is made in USA and then shipped to China to package products.

      • More like it was printed in China to say Made in USA?

    • +1

The plates and bowls are made in the USA. Mugs/cups are made in China.

Got a set from 12 years ago, it was the same then.

      • +2

Does that mean china will add one set of tariffs, before the americans add their tariff?…

  • +2

I don't use any other dish! Just don't forget to wash the wax off them before use

Is it is bone (literally animal bones) China?

    • +1

      Laminated Tempered Glass

    • Good lord no, not at that price. Even the traditional English bone china is now made in Indonesia.

If I was going to buy China, I would buy vintage sets where there are still huge numbers of replacements available (eg Royal Doulton Old Leeds Spray).

They have some unconventional characteristics with regards to breakage. One is extreme resistance, which we all know. Another is spontaneity, as I've experienced - had one randomly do this a few years back while it was sitting untouched on a bench:

Another is fragmentation - instead of breaking into a few large pieces and some smaller bits when dropped, it 'explodes' into a million little shards.

    • +1

Come up with a title and a back story and that becomes modern art.

    • "sitting untouched on a bench"

after taken out from microwave ?

      • +1

It was one of the smaller plates, which I don't use in the microwave. Best I can recall, it was sitting next to the sink waiting to be washed later in the day, and hadn't been touched for some time. I was in another room when I heard the loud crack and found it like that.

  • +5

Love Corelle. They actually are fairly durable and light.

  • -6

Feels like cheap plates. Prefer traditional stuff even if they break

    • Have you tried them?

      • +1

        Yes. The feel cheap.

        • Replaced my old arcoroc set with corelle about 13 year ago, never had a breakage, who remembers the exploding arcorocs?

    • "traditional" sure says it. Ceramic plates been used since 2000BC. Time to get with the time =p

  • Tempting. I have a few of these pieces and in fact one is in front of me now.

I have broken one before and they shatter into sharp pieces.

  • +3

Oftast plates and bowls from ikea are very similar and only $0.69 each all year long. https://m.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/art/10258914/

    • +1

Have both and Corelle ones are certainly more durable

  • I can't stand to eat on ceramic plates anymore. I feel like I'm living in the middle ages.

Tempered glass plates is the future. If you guys didn't realise, Corningware are the same people that make Corning Gorilla Glass on your phone.

    • +3

      What's you cutlery like?

      Fibre-carbon composite?

      I prefer my silverware.

      • that sounds awesome. im looking for some now.

  • -5

It’s like hardened melamine with a glossy coating. Feels cheap. And it’s actually cheaper at that cheap price.

Prefer my breakable porcelain or fine bone china.

  • @nocure:

    what are arcorocs?

i'm not old enough to remember.

  • Seems like its out of stock?

  • +1

Just purchased in store. 3 year warranty. They had some loose plates for sale as well. Very lightweight and looks good quality.

    • Was it just the white ones or did they have different designs as well?

      • +2

Only white, but they have a clean look.

        • Thanks mate, will have a look at my local woollies tomorrow

  • +1

I bought the second last one. Hopefully your stores has a couple. Get in early
