How Long after Release Do Galaxy Flagships Receive a Price Drop?

Generally how long after release do we usually see a drop in the price of flagship galaxy devices.
Looking at getting a S9 plus but I'm willing to wait a few months to get a better deal.

  • S8 RRP has just dropped to $999 (Samsung Australia) and it was $1099 at release
Samsung have adopted the apple model, they drop the price only when the next model comes out but as they keep the model in the range for another year it only drops slightly.

Wait 6 months, then buy it on a credit card with 6 month price protection.

While the RRP of Samsung phones might not decrease in the first few months, there's definitely ways you can source an Australian stock version of the phone cheaper than RRP even just a month after they've been released. Samsung like to think they've gone the Apple route but iPhones are much harder to find at a cheaper price until right before the next model is being released.

In short - if you can wait 2 months, the phone should drop $200-250 (based on trends for the S8) and will hover around that price for a while until about 5 months from initial release where it'll go down another $100-150.

No problems, glad it was helpful

    • great reply!

      $959

NOT AU STOCK (Vaya dont sell AU Stock)
Even checking the comments on the two deals shows a lot of people upset.
Vaya consider AU stock to be Grey imported stock they ship from AU.

The rest are RRP $1099/$999 with Ebay Codes so not exactly a Discount on RRP
$999 is the current RRP and looking around for a ebay code should get you a decent discount but you wont get Au Stock much lower for some time yet.

Sorry I didn’t have time to check the details of every post I referenced, but I did only put in deals which were either from reputable Australia retailers or listed as Australian stock.

Whilst I understand the RRP may still be $999, and that a lot of the deals relied on eBay coupons - given that OP has already been an OzBargain user for almost a year now, it’s safe to assume that they’re looking for the cheapest deal out there, which is what I presented. There are even cheaper options out there for grey market devices (which OzB evidently has an appetite for - judging by the volume of listings)

IMO you missed the best one.

Not the cheapest cash price, but the 20000 Qantas points is easily $200 in value

    • That's a Legendary post thank you!

Just get s8 plus now it's the best time to.
    Never buy newly released products.

Yeah, you never know if you'll get another exploding note7 in your face

      • Seriously!! How many Note 7 actually exploded?

        • Enough to warrant Airlines specifically banning that model from being brought on board?

        • @Blitzfx:

          An how many is that?

        • @HandsomeMonkey: It doesn't matter.

          About 1,234,567,890 units

  • Never buy tech just as it's released, though like someone said above Samsung has adopted Apple's price model.

Maybe have a look at other brands that offer more value for money, there is the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s, OnePlus 5T, OnePlus 6.
I bought a Xiaomi Mi A1 for $257 in late November and I absolutely love it.

Look for someone with staff discount

  • Another question, does JB HIFI price match? I have a $150 gift card that I would love to eventually put towards the S9 plus when there is a good enough sale. But if they don't price match I'll have to get it from whoever has the good price.

      Ask.
Funnily enough they'll price match most of the time but if it's a great price they probably won't. They'll just say "we can do it for $XXX."

Haggle, and ask at the end of the month (when they need to reach their monthly targets) and don't be afraid to walk away and come back if you don't like what that salesperson is offering.

  • Samsung and other Android phones will always be subject to sales, despite Samsung's attempts to control pricing much in the way of Apple devices. The thing with Apple is that the stores only have a 10ish% markup as well as contractual agreements in place meaning that not only are they not allowed to discount Apple products in particular ways, but even if they did, there's no real room to offer said discount. Stores accept this because Apple products sell themselves, whereas Samsungs and the rest require some amount of a push.

Buying an iPhone on day one has no real negative, whereas I would always wait 2 months or so for a Samsung product (unless there's an exceptional pre-order deal).

  • Samsung tend to keep prices up until next model, LG price drops within 6 months, I own a V20…less than 1/2 price in 12 mths…. great phones though.
