  • thks grabbed one, they make great presents, now to grab a 12V power pack of Ebay with AU plug.

almost feel I need 2 for myself, one set up on about 100ma or low current for AAA, and one set up 500ma for AA.

    • +2

Link us a good looking one when you find one.

    • +1

one set up on about 100ma

With this charger, you can't save the settings. You have to select the current every time you insert a battery, or it will default to 500mA after a few seconds.

Also, this charger doesn't go as low as 100mA, it only has four current settings: 300mA, 500mA, 700mA, 1000mA. 100mA would be too low anyway, if a charger takes longer than 4 hours to charge a battery, then the -dV/dT effect is difficult to detect and the charger will probably miss it, resulting in overcharge. Nitecore chargers are the only exception to this rule, they use a different method.

      • hmm why don't they make one that does the 9 hour charge for AA and AAA ….. 100ma and 300ma … people seem to be in such a hurry.

I notice people seem to be obsessed with how many charge cycles a battery will do eg eneloop pro vs std …. not many seem to talking abour charge current and how that impacts the longevity.

might need a nitecore for the AAA.

        • why don't they make one that does the 9 hour charge

Because that's called a "timed charger", and it damages your batteries. If you're using rechargeable batteries, you're using them to save money or to save the environment. Damaging the batteries does neither of these things.

There are only two types of charger that don't damage batteries - a "smart charger" and a so-called "trickle charger". Trickle charging takes at least 24 hours, I've not seen a true trickle charger available for purchase for at least 20 years. Going back even further, I think trickle chargers were only available as electronic kits.

        • That's a very overly conservative charging rate unless you're charging them in an insulated box or something :S.
You don't want to heat up NiMH batteries but warm to touch at the default charge rates is no problem either.

    US$14.39 delivered here from aliexpress

I bought one from this seller nearly 2 years ago. great unit. been using it charge and check capacity of 100+ 18650s cells recovered from laptop batteries.

I used the ac adapter from an old optus modem.

    • Wow didn't realise this charger is so cheap.

    • yeah looking at the prices of the AU power supplies, I think I'll just dig around for an old router one.

      • the power pack is 2amp, 5.5mm x 2.1 mm plug got one on ebay for $6.50.

ex router pack will do the trick unless you select the highest current, but that would really heat up batteries.

        • Can you link the one you got on ebay? is it shipping from AU?

      US $12.59 here -same seller

      or US$12.41 via the app

      (sorry for negging gunslinger)

      • Nice find. But I remember somewhere reading you can't use Paypal with Aliexpress. Whats the next best option as not keen to use a credit card directly on the site.

        • +1

          yes, paypal is not available.

credit card is fine for aliexpress. I've done 800+ transactions and never had a problem.

best to use a foreign fee free card.

just remember that alipay (the aligroup escrow service) is huge. larger than paypal.

          @altomic:

Thanks for that. Cheaper to pay in AUD on site by the looks of it (my credit card charge % fee on top of conversion rate), but on the plus side 10% Cashrewards are applicable for Aliexpress.

        • @Matt2018: Oh yeah, 10% cash rewards. = US$12.59 -10% = US$11.33

        • @altomic:

For some reason I cannot find the unit at US$12.59 when using either the Cashrewards or Shopback sites.
Cheapest one I can find is US$14.96 .. tried everything I can think of to find the cheaper one but getting frustrated.

        • @Matt2018: I use the cash rewards chrome extension.

      • now to find cheap decent batteries to go with it

        • Ikea LADDA's

      • Strange, I see $17.99

        • Aliexpress sale is now over

      • just checked tracking status and it appears mine went back to sender :(

    • Yes, if you don't need the 12V AC adaptor, this is probably the best price.

    • How did you smoothly remove the metal connectors soldered onto the batteries? I've recovered some 18650 cells from my Samsung laptop battery, and I couldn't get a clean removal.

    • Bought mine from there too after an OzBargainer linked me to it. It's the official store. Not that I can prove it but mine is still working fine, and was same price as my D4 and that was including the power-brick option for the Lii-500.

  • Superb charger. I revived dualshock 3 batteries with the NOR test. Otherwise, the Lii-402 ($10 rosegal deal) should be good enough for simple charging duties.

    • Bought Lii-402 recently from this deal and really happy with it so far. But very tempted to get Lii-500 so I can also analyse battery health as well as charging.

  • hmmm.. this or the Nitecore

    • +1

same challenge …. they all charge batteries, BUT get more cycles with gentle charge instead of rapid charge eg over 10 hours (1/10 mah) instead of 1 or 2 hours.

Most of my stuff is now AAA (so about 100mah charge) or AA (so about 250mah) charge and not may seem to cater for the AAA.

I had wanted to buy 2, set them up for AA or AAA currents and not have to press buttons from there on.

There is a new nitecore I4, but "it's even faster" and higher current, and the I4s don't seem to allow current selection but are designed for "auto detect the best option".

    • +3

I have both of these chargers. I've only used them for NiMh batteries, it may be different if you are charging Li-ion.

Nitecore D4 won't tell you how much charge was put into the batteries, Lii-500 will. The Nitecore will tell you how long the charge cycle was, so you can calculate how much was pushed in, but the Lii-500 tells you directly.

The Lii-500 has more buttons (six vs two), which makes it a little bit more convenient to monitor during charging.

Nitecore D4 is quite slow when charging more than two batteries, expect 7+ hour charge times, because the maximum charge current is 375mA if four batteries are being charged. Despite this, it still accurately cuts off when the batteries are fully charged. If one or two batteries are being charged, Nitecore D4 charges at 750mA max.

Lii-500 has optional test modes, to discover the capacity of your batteries. Nitecore D4 is only a charger, no test modes.

Lii-500 will tell you the internal impedance of the batteries, which can indicate when a battery is starting to fail. This could also be useful if you are using the batteries in heavy-discharge situations, like a camera flash. However, this doesn't seem to work, see my later comment.

The Nitecore keeps it's display backlight turned on for the full charge cycle, the Lii-500 turns off the display backlight after a couple of minutes. You can turn off the Nitecore's backlight by holding down a button for five seconds, if you find the light annoying. I prefer the backlight to always be on, that setting isn't available on the Lii-500.

You can tell at a glance when the Nitecore has finished charging all the batteries - all of the bargraphs are "full". With the Lii-500, first you have to push a button to turn the backlight on, then you have to cycle through each battery to see if "END" is displayed on all of them. The Lii-500 only shows one battery's data on the display at a time.

  • I've got one, I find it tends to terminate the charge a little early, around 1.48V. Also it doesn't detect resistance well, as its telling me all my batteries are at 52ohms.

    • It tells me 48 milliohms or 52 milliohms for all of my batteries. I just tried a really old battery that I have, that some chargers refuse to charge, and it reckons 52 milliohms for that one too. I suspect the resistance detection doesn't work well on these units, the old battery is pretty bad when I use it.

    Not a cheap price.

Aliexpress lots of shops sell for $14.10 usd with free postage or pay about 16.50 usd for lii-500 with charger delivered.

    • Feel free to drop links to cheaper Li500 here, as I want to buy one today.

      • -1

Just load the app and type lii-500 lots of sellers with high rating that sell for 14usd

        • The ones on AliExpress are mostly being sold with non-AU plugs… wch is a big pain in the a$$ IMHO. Some sellers on AliExpress are selling bare charger for US $14.94 (with 5% cashrewards = US $14.19)
          One link here

        • @quasims: the one on gear best is also non au plug or Comes with no plug, same as ali.

  • My Lithium Koala arrived today. Pilferred a power pack from an old optus router. Currently got it testing some recovered 18650s.
