      Tempted to triangulate coordinates…

      • Or you can just look at my profile :-)

  • The Skyrim one is an absolute steal!

    • Would have bought it if only I have not already finished playing this game twice :D

  • +4

Wish they had the Zelda BotW one.

    • Yeah that's the only one I'd be interested in.

    • Yeah. I must say I'm not digging botw. I prefer Zelda to be more focused (I haven't played Zelda since OoT), this is too open and it's not really coming together for me. Especially when you trek to a tower miles away to find youre too underpowered to climb it because some lame enemy kills you with two projectiles. Massive wasted efforts due to a lack of game direction really annoys me

      • +2

You make your own objectives - have a look at the map and look for interesting place names, make your way there. There are all sorts of unobvious puzzles scattered everywhere. If you find yourself too underpowered - explore the Faron region, there is a spot that you can get to by floating from the tower where there's at least ten hearty durians. Cook one or more of these to get a couple of yellow hearts. If you haven't been to the Faron region yet, keep an eye out for hearty radishes and big hearty radishes. There are multiple ones growing near most stables. These give you yellow hearts too but not as many. If you cook just one you get a full refill of hearts plus one or more yellows. If you keep collecting radishes or durians and cooking them it is basically impossible to die, unless you're trying to kill something really tough and run out. But in which case you can just reload to before you started trying to kill it and get all your meals back. Don't give up on the game just yet. There's definitely direction only there's hundreds of threads that sit there very quietly waiting for you to pick one out of your own volition before they activate, but they make you think everything is your idea (excellent world design really, giving you direction without you realising it). It's an excellent compromise between being totally self-directed and being strictly linear. Really has the best of both.

use your friend google and you can find most of these FREE in PDF form on gaming forums

    • +5

Same as DVDs/CDs as well. If you use google you could get it for free.

    • +2

Even ignoring actual updatable game guides, PDF copies of the books add more value, being searchable, being able to put them on any device etc.

      • recently noticed that these guides come with a code to give you access to a downloadable version of the book/guide.

    • +8

Better having a professional printed copy.

          Phone a friend?

That's it, folks! Shut down OzBargain! No point having it since we can just steal anything listed here…

      • Aren't those strategies written and shared by those have completed the games? Is there a copyright to those strategies? Serious question. I usually just watch YouTube videos to learn the strategies.

        • I think easternculture is referring to pdfs of these guides vs people producing their own content and releasing it for free.

        • There are usually 2 different and reliable books out there. "Prima" is the official guides but expect to pay about $30 for those. My son usually buys the Pokemon Wii etc ones as they indicate all the evolutions and where to find the elusive Pokies etc.

    • +1

When I buy guides it isn't to use them, it's for collecting. So pdf has no value.

    • +1

How about not needing them at all. You just need to go gamefaqs. No need to search and steal. No reason to even read them.

People who buy this mostly for collection purpose and want a physical copy not for the content

      • Exactly, when I get stuck and need to look something up there are loads of resources on the web. For Skyrim I just google uesp and the name of the quest I am stuck on :-p

    • These guides comes with free digital copies as well.

  • +11

My Strategy is to watch a youtube play through if I have any issues or can't find something.

But thanks for bringing this to our attention Askhole.

    • +2

      No problem mate.. Anytime 😊

    • +18

My strategy is to mash buttons, keep doing the same thing that doesn't work in case it's a bug and then rage quit.

      • +1

Hahaha.. Thats works for me too πŸ˜‚

      • +2

That's one step up from my strategy which is to throw my faeces at the screen and make excited monkey noises until I get tired and pass out.

  • +7

I buy these for the art!
Of course, only when these get heavily reduced, the OzBargain way!

    • +3

      100% agreed.

However, the Skyrim one has 1100 pages….that alone is worth the 10 bucks.

It is a great deal for those who love physical stuff for their games (me).

    • -3

I bought some from EB for $2 then sold them on eBay for $18 each.

      That's the Ozbargain way.

      • +8

        Broden way you meant?

  • Thanks OP. Picked Skyrim. Will play it eventually, and will enjoy flipping through these pages regardless.

  • Closest Skyrim 588.56km away. :(

    • +8

Well, if you didn't waste precious time posting you could have done about 50 kilometres by now.

  • +8

With everything, even legitimate, available online these days, I can't believe hard copy strategy guides/walkthrus are still a thing.

    • +1

      Agreed, just use google/YouTube

      • People here are saying they like the artwork. Sure, I guess. There is a tactile pleasure to be had from reading an old fashioned book that you can't replicate electronically.

I got paid to write a guide to In Cold Blood like 18 years ago. Man, that was some tedium to compile. There's only so many ways to write "go down the corridor to the right," etc.

        • +1

Yeah, I have several collector edition ones, great coffee table books, amazing art in them. On the cheap, worth every penny.

        • @RocketSwitch: We just had a council cleanup, so I found myself tearfully parting with a lot of stuff like that. My old Garfield and Hagar comic books — gone to landfill forever… :~(

        • @crankycarrot: Damn :(, we collect many things over this lifetime, it's the sad reality.

        • @RocketSwitch: I watched about 26 kilos worth of precious memories get crushed in the back of a garbage compactor.

    • +1

As posted above, it is for those who like physical copies/art. Also, imo it is more convenient to flick through pages than spending time googling things (especially in the bigger games), and at these prices it is definitely worth it (imo).

As a further example, I still buy some PC games in physical because I love the box art (fallout 4, ESO, Oblivion- not many besides that though).

      • +1

        That's a fair point

      • +1

Son has retained all his old games, boxing and game books. I think the (well thumbed though) books will one day be collector items much the same as many of the games and consoles. The old GameCube still works, and is much sought after … especially as he has the rare Game Boy player attachment too. (I purchased that as I saw it on special and had never seen one before). Has retained all the old Game Boy players too. Yes; most definitely a hoarder!

        • +1

Yes exactly right, I am the same too. Have all my stuff, even some receipts for limited editions for older games.

        • +1

          @Ahbal:
Sometimes son goes to those EB Ganes games tournaments in Melbourne City (Swanston St). If you friend them on Facebook you should get notice of these. "Bartonica" (games venue) in Melb also hold social type tournaments on popular games or media. Good, young crowd there, 18 yo's+ though as it is also a bar. There is a shop a street off the main station street in Frankston that also hold smaller games events; even the old Cube or Atari ones!

        • +1

@JediJan: That sounds great, thanks for letting me know! I am in Sydney though, so I hope I can find similar events here!

        • +1

          @Ahbal:
Oops noticed my misspell … Bartronica is the bar / gaming venue in Melb city. Young crowd; popular with uni students too. One of son's friends had her (gaming) 21st there.

    • Me neither. I honestly didn't know they still exist until I read this bargain. :P

  • Where is the one for Left 4 Dead 2?

    • It was left for dead, too.

  • +1

Do people actually buy strategy guides?

    • +1

      Yeah for fair play 😊

      • fair foreplay

  • +4

do they make one of these for an engineering degree

  • I ordered mine for click and collect, is there a time window that I am supposed to pick it up in?

    • You get confirmation when it is ready to pick up. If you go early the order won't be ready for you

    • Abhal, just call the 'pick up' store you chose and ask them to hold it for the time you need…

      • Ok so I need to let them know? Ill be picking it up next week (Tuesday).

  • Um, 90% of the content of these, and far more other information, are available on the internet for free. Is this really a 'deal'?

    • Eh, they have pretty pictures, and sometimes it's nice to have a physical book.

      • +1

Nice to have something physical that doesn't need charging or add to your 'screen time' in a world becomingly increasingly digital and virtual.

  • Gone are the days where you just figured shit out…

    • +3

Strategy guides have been around for decades.

      • I know, but they were harder to get access to. At least that was the case for me and my friends.

Seems like people put in more effort to clear games back then cause they didn't have Gamefaqs or a strategy guide handy. I didn't need strategy guides for NES/SNES games. It wasn't until the internet that I started to use them for help on certain parts. But even then, I'd try to finish the game without help first…

  • gamefaqs, wikia, etc

  • OK, silly me, but how do you check which Melb stores have the Skyrim one?

(No 'check store' available, I'm assuming it's completely sold out or a price mistake?)

    • +1

Yes - fairly heavily sold this afternoon so that button was deactivated. Best bet is to front up to your local and have a look.

  • +1

Got Halo and SW Battlefront for a dollar each 3 weeks back from JB.
I think prices are dependent on the store.

  • ive always wanted a strategy guide for snake on my nokia, however i havent found one yet.

  • +2

Picked up the Skyrim book - it's the biggest strategy guide I've ever seen. Massive beast!

  • 4CST-9BY8-27W2-57WY if anyone wants a digital copy of the Skyrim guide.

    • Thanks for sharing, someone else has redeemed

  • I used to buy game guides to compliment whatever game I purchased at the time. Found them fun to read (especially the ones that included more about the making of the game), I went through a clean out phase a few years back… ended up binning quite a few of the guides from the early to mid 2000's (kept the big special ones for games like MGS 3, GTA Vice City, San Andreas, IV etc). Still buy the occasional guide (Super Mario Odyssey and actually picked up the Arkham Knight guide from JB Hifi some time ago during another game guide clearance). I still enjoy flicking through them, even though watching walkthroughs on youtube is the easier/lazy option these days.

  • Thanks OP, just picked up the Skyrim and Halo 5 guides. Awesome deal!

  • Thanks OP. Bought the Skykim guide at Hoppers Crossing. They still had about 4 copies left sitting on the floor in the Playstation aisle. Awesome book.. original pricing was $89!!!

    • No problem.. Enjoy πŸ‘πŸ˜Š

  • Thanks OP :-) I got the last two shelf copies at Artarmon, but there may be more because the shelf was packed. There were a lot of other cheap guides too. Great store!

I saw a sealed copy at Belrose months ago. It was still there when search went offline yesterday.

  • Any Skyrim found in Perth? If so please share :-)

  • Gonna go and have a look at Geppsx jb hi first to see if theres any skyrim left

  • For anyone who's interested, there are some of these still available at the Belrose store:

    2x Halo 5 Guides => $39 to $5.50
    2x Mafia 3 Guides => $45 to $5.50
    2x Assasins Creed Syndicate Guides => $39 to $5.50
    2x Unchartered 4 Guides => $45 to $5.50
