  It's a bit of a different experience if you need to stop at every road crossing if running on the footpath, or run in the traffic lanes with regular traffic.

  You can do it for free during the actual event; they're public spaces. If you can live without a bib, their drink stops and a sense of paid for inclusion then save yourself the money.
  
  I've done it that way - rocked up about an hour after the start, within a short time was in the thick of it.
