        • @pronoun:

It really depends on what your manual says. Check it. Since we live in a warmer climate, my manual says I can use 5w-30 all the way up to 20w-50. The first number is cold viscosity (thickness) and the second number is warm oil viscosity.

In colder climates you generally want thinner oil so it's not too thick from the colder weather. In Australia, we can use most types, unless your car is newer and more restrictive on what is allowed.

My car is older so is more flexible in this requirement.

        • @pronoun:

I usually stick to 5W-30 for my car. I previously owned a 1992 Camry before selling that off and and driving this current Camry. I had used 10W-40 in it since it was an older car….my benchmark for an older car is 10+ years or with 150,000kms+ on the clock.

My current Camry is 7 years and done 135,000.

      • From where do you get that price $47 for 10L?

        • @willister: This deal has long been sold out. Regular price is ~$100-120?

        • @Matt P:

Didnt realise that…just saw it and went wow $47 even cheaper than 5L.

Reg price well over $113 (price for 10L Nulon non Euro)

        • @willister: I wish this deal was still on - I bought 2 for my VW - should have gotten a couple more.

        • +1

@singlemalt72: means you have 2 year supply of oil, 2 changes ….. how much oil do you want to store between changes ?
either repco or sca have a deal every 6 months, especially in dec for holiday motoring.

        • Yeah it is all sold out

        • @garage sale:
I actually go through a couple of cars per year, buying at auction and flipping audi's, VW golfs and the like usually do a service when I get them so my oil only lasted 6 months :P

But yeah, there are always sales coming up.

        • +1

@singlemalt72: i thought i was the only one haha

in the last 10 years i've owned 10 GTI's let alone the other models haha

    • Definitely better. Fully synthetic vs HX7 semi synthetic

whats the normal price for this oil?

    • +1

      Was $70.29 each
      Now $29.99 each

      • dam that a good price

    • +3

It comes at this price a few times every year.

      • If you can get 6L for the same price it is a much better bargain as mine Toyota needs 6.1L of oil.

  • Oh wow what a good timing ;)

I just serviced my car using the same oil that was on sale last year for the same price and I was waiting for this deal to come up again.

    Great deal thanks OP

  • My Ford Focus 2011 needs 5w-30 but the Castrol website recommends the Stop-Start instead of this. Is this suitable instead?

  • +1

OP probably a good idea to include this link in the description so people can check the compatibility of the oil with their engines.

  • woo! I OzB'd this one. 2% Cash rewards + 9% gift card + loyalty credits

  • Thanks, purchased!

  • Too much brain washing growing up, every oil post this song floods my mind… https://youtu.be/WEMGmJ0AJ5c

  • I have just over $30 in club credits with Supercheap. Can I simply go in and get one of these without having to use more real money?

Seems you should be able too but wanted to be sure there is no catches.

    • +1

      Yes you can

      • Yeah just did it. My club credits were due to expire tommorow so this worked well. Nearest store was a half hour drive so did delivery instead which was $10. only paid $2.14 out of my own pocket.Had $37.80 in credits. Would have used more than $2 in fuel to have gone there. Good result. :-)

Do better quality oils give you better fuel economy?

Maybe it's a placebo effect, but recently I've been doing the oil changes myself rather than doing it for $90 at the mechanic. I've noticed a fairly significant increase in fuel economy when I did it myself using castrol edge (From 11.5-12.5 to 10-10.8 l/100km. All urban driving).

Could also be the mechanic disregarding the ideal oil viscosity and throwing whatever was sitting around.

    • +1

yes mechanics seem to be a bit “ generic” in their oil selections , also some oils don’t hold their viscosity for long once it’s in an engine, hence will my fresh 3w30 still be 5w30 after 5000 or 6 mths.

“synthetics” are supposed to remain true to viscosity longer.

fuel economy ….. the monaros we sold into the USA had low viscosity mobil 1 so they has better fuel economy for tests so oil viscosity does impact fuel economy.

  • +3

If the mechanic was doing them for $90, there is no chance he would be using good oil.
Fuel saving oils do exactly as they claim, if not everyone would have the companies who sell them in court by now for false advertising.
I worked as a technician in a Holden dealership for 20 years and saw the results of fuel saving oils first hand.
Whether the extra fuel savings make up for the higher price of the oil is debateable, but you also usually get better engine protection as well.

  • Guys is this good for Toyota Hybrid 2014 ???

    • +1

"Early Prius models require a GF-4 or equivalent oil. GF-5 and next year’s GF-6 oils are back compatible. Some 2006 to current models call for 0W-20 motor oil and earlier models call for 5W20 oil."

the 0W20 means it's a more viscous oil when hot and cold ….., so impact would be slightly on fuel economy (2-3%) when the combustion engine is doing the work. We don't get as cold as other places in the world which is what the "0" is about, how viscous is the oil when cold. The "20" is how thin the oil is in a hot engine. So the fill for the hybrid is targeted at fuel economy when using combustion.

0W20 is Castrol magnatec stop start and it's $60 for 4 litres …

  • sold out everywhere?

    • I'm in country NSW and all the shops around my area still have it.
Did you click on the "pick Up Today" Link to see which stores have it near your area?
It looks like Sydney stores are mostly sold out, still available for delivery though when I checked.
