    • $699 is about as cheap as you'll get for a while without going grey market (and losing the 2 year warrenty), still hard to pick up the S8 for under $500 and 25GB for $49 is cheap as hell on Telstra.

Only reason to hold off is that 5G is coming next year and no phones support it yet. If you're going to wait 6 months to buy a phone I suggest waiting a few months more to get a 5G phone.

So how do I get this phone at the discounted price but get out of the contract

    • Win the lotto

        • +1

          Baaaa

        • @homersimpson: Baaa baaa

        • You are being immature, I'm glad you are stuck on a contract.

    • there is an exit fee, so you pay that and your out of contract

  • -3

    ARGH FUUUUUUU Telstra

  • +1

Cheapest s9+ au stock at the moment is at eBay with code PICKYOURS $1153.60

So if you consider $1153.60 as phone value, it would be $1437 - $1153.60 = $283.4 for 25GB 12 months plan. ($23.6 per month)

If you managed to grab eBay or JB gift cards last night results may vary.

  • Damn it! Literally just signed up 2 days ago :(

  • +1

These handset plans are starting to look cheaper than buying outright and getting a sim only plan - that's a new development… (Or have I been missing something the past few years).

    • It's because phones are getting ridiculously expensive in recent years. But also because Optus has been offering compelling mobile deals with their unlimited streaming bundles that's kicking off competition to an extent. Telstra is simply responding.

      • +2

When decent handset plans for 60-100aud there seemed a strong argument for buying a 300aud phone and grabbing a sim only deal.

Now that handset plans are going for 49 bucks I'm thinking about jumping back on plans…

The s9, pixel 2 deal… Seriously reconsidering buying the Nokia 8 outright.

        • Exactly my feeling!

        • I've been doing the Kogan Sims and using my g4 I had but the pixel deal was great, added up over 2 years the cost of a mid-range phone and 2 years of Kogan mobile 22gb was only 150$ cheaper than the pixel plan and it's a flagship device. So yeah it's definitely changed to an even footing with plans now

  • +1

Can possibly port in, buy the s9, and ask Telstra for an upgrade to the Pixel plan. Then sell the pixel/s9 for a free phone.

    • +2

Easier said than done. I know few have been successful but mostly not.

      • +1

I agree, extremely difficult but can be done. Requires lots of phone calls and even then there is no guarantee. I went from this $49 plan + $200 gift card to the Pixel Deal. This is a much better deal considering I sold the Pixel and purchased a S9+…

However I did buy the S9+ outright on the Coles Mastercard Price protect to cover the difference in two years…

        • LOL so you get refunded the difference?

        • @TarquinOliverNimrod:

Yea up to two years. I'll wait for a year and maybe 10 months to claim to get the difference. I'm assuming then it'll probably be around $700

        • @R3XNebular:
Could you tell me more about this Coles Mastercard Price Protection. I don't quite understand :(

    • What do you mean by the Pixel plan?

  • Do you think it would be possible to upgrade to the pixel plan with Telstra?

    • +2

I had the exact thought. Wonder if it's possible?

      1. Pay $699 to get Samsung S9 (after $500 JB Hifi Giftcard), sign up to Telstra 12 months plan $49
      2. Then upgrade to $59 Family and Friends plan to get Google Pixel 2 XL, Google Home Mini and Earphones
      3. Then contact Telstra Chat again to get $10 discount and extra 5GB data
      4. Sell off one of the phones and you could be on $49 plan, 20 GB data (depends, some ppl managed to get even more data)
      5. Instant gain $1000 depending how much you sell the phone.

If the current Samsung S9 deal at JB Hifi "resembles" the old $49 plan + $200 JB Hifi deal, then it ought to be possible but it might take some effort and several attempts.

      • Apparently it is "possible" according to Najuka. Here is the transcript

        • +4

Probably more of a no, Najuka needs more training

        • @uraha:
          @Poorstudent:

In all honesty, I am quite confident it can be done

          1. It has already been done (upgrade to the $59 Google Pixel 2 XL plan) in the past $49 JB Hifi plans which gave a $200 Giftcard. On a technical level, JB Hifi is now giving a $500 Giftcard, which you spend it to get a cheaper Samsung S9/S9+ Phone

          2. And the Samsung S9/S9+ Phone is legally yours. You bought it outright.

          3. There is a disconnect between Telstra and JB Hifi. There's not much communication between the two. This is a JB Hifi exclusive offer. Which makes sense what she said… go get it from JB Hifi, then come back to us, at Telstra Chat. Then she can help with upgrading the plan for free (i.e. waiving any Early Termination Fees or penalty)

          4. I don't see why if the upgrade can be done with a $200 JB Hifi Giftcard, why can't it be done with essentially a $500 JB Hifi Giftcard.

          5. But I still think it will require several attempts, alot of time, patience and determination to get the bargain. Not for the faint hearted.

        • @Sydney11: how soon you reckon we should wait before asking telstra to upgrade?

        • @Droid11:
recommend to do it immediately right after, at least start the process.

          • Telstra might changes its policies/rules
          • if it really doesn't work out or you want to give up and not happy with the Samsung S9 deal, it will be much easier to "push" for a "cooling off period" and request for a cancellation of the contract without penalty
        • @Sydney11:hang on, the $59 plan deal is from Telstra directly or through jb hifi?

        • @Droid11:
          both

        • +1

the Pixel offer says "for new port in customers only"
If you have taken up the offer for the s9/s9+ you have ported so the Pixel offer is no longer applicable….. Very risky

        • Operator almost definitely didn't know what was going on. That was a pretty convoluted hypothetical scenario involving multiple plan switches and I highly doubt they would be able to follow through.

Lines like "Yes This family plans is available" doesn't mean they will let you port to it and lines like "They will also help you with some discount" is vague as sin.

That being said, I have ported to friends and family from byo (see my comment history for transcript) so I would say this would work too, depending on the chat operator you get.

        • +1

I managed to do it! (I hope, I just got off the phone with Telstra, so will need to see if it actually delivers and shows up as the right amount on my bill)
Just had to pay a $10 delivery charge.

        • @pf2: did you need to say anything specific or did you experience any push back?

        • @Ryman:

Yeah went on two Telstra chats who said I was good to get the deal, three store visits who told me they can't do it but one advised me to make a complaint. Complaint officer called and no hassle.

        • @pf2:

Did they end up honouring it?

  • Dammit I got the previous JB offer a couple of weeks ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/372623 and I want the S9. Any options here?

    • Noh, I went to JB southland around lunchtime and was told no chance to get for this price even I signed up same plan two days ago. I also tried to talk to the store manager who was nice enough and made a couple enquirers with the market office which was still no luck for me :(

    • Try ask on Telstra chat.

  • The S9 sums on the optus $59 plan look better, am i missing something? I know it's 12 vs 24 months but even so..

    • $59 is a lease plan for 24 ms

      • I know that, but the extra $10 per month in payments ultimately works out less than half of the money you have to shell out buying the handset upfront on this plan.

        • Depends on how you weigh it. $69 per month for 24ms which is $20x24=$480 compare to $49 + $700 upfront for 12ms only. Personally I would go for the later option

        • @willywolf: Only thing is that the next 12 months you'll probably be paying for another contract too. Even if a low cost one, right? The 24 month Optus contract has you covered for that period, you'll have to pay someone for the 12 months after that which should be added to the calculations.

          Optus costs $1656 (24 x $69), gets you a Samsung Galaxy S9 + 24 months of 25GB data and phone line.
          Telstra deal is $1287 (12 x $49 + $699), gets you a Samsung Galaxy S9 + 12 months of 25GB data and phone line.

For the cost difference to be better with Telstra you'd need a contract for the 12 months after than being less than $369 ($30.75) for 25GB plus line.

Do you think Optus, Telstra or any company offer 25GB for $30 or less in 12 months from now, if you don't think so, then I'd say Optus is the better deal.

        • @FabMan: the data will be cheaper and cheaper and it won't surprise us if it mite drop to $30 for 25gb ono after 12 ms time. What's more, it's more flexible to muck around after 12ms, I mean can upgrade to s10 or note 9 or sth similar: )

        • @willywolf: I understand that, but I don't think it is clear cut a better deal as Optus is straight forward option for 24 months. I also don't imagine 25GB will be cheaper than $29 in 12 months, it could be, but selling the phone and having options is the most beneficial reason I can see as there could be good deals on combined packages like this.

        • +1

@FabMan: I was paying $36 for 30gb data (which works as cheap as $30 for 25gb) with optus for the last 3 ms but have to switch to Telstra two days ago due to the blackspot after I moved to a new address. It all depends what suit you at the moment. In regards to the flexibility and economics aspects, I would go for this Telstra deal and switch to a cheap sim only plan at end of 12 ms, ethier sell the phone or keep it for another year.

        • @willywolf:

That was a good deal considering they are charging $40 for 15GB as an 'amazing offer' right now.

      • $69 on OPtus for non-lease

      • My bad, didn't realise it was a lease.

    • Yeah, but it’s optus not Telstra…

      • Good point, who wants to support scummy Telstra?

        • +3

People who value reception and speed.

        • +1

@Mitch889: was getting sick of dropouts on my daily commute to the cbd. Was with virgin. Now with telstra. No more dropouts.

        • @Mitch889: I guess I prefer not to support Telstra and their scummy actions, easy since I don't have reception problems with Optus network.

        • +1

@FabMan: Get a deal where they are effectively making no money from you and you are more of a drain on the system than supporting them.

        • @tryagain: I like your thinking!

  • Does the Telstra one support free tv streaming etc?

    • Definitely not for Netflix or similar if that's what you are asking

  • So let me try to understand this. So I'm currently on Telstra prepaid the best way is to get a $2 port over to Optus during business hours and then wait for 24 hours and try to sign up this plan. Would that work?

Should I try with Vodafone instead?

  • Was keen initially, but the Telstra deal excludes international calls. Is there any work around for this?

    • That's another $10 more you can add it on via online chat

      • Thanks for that. Extra $120 for me then, deal doesn't work for me.
Hopefully some good outright deals EOFY.

    • Use Skype

      • Probably, but the relative I have OS is a bit wobbly on that stuff.
In any case I just bought an S9 off eBay using the 10% off deal for $845.
My current TPG works fine for me for $20/month so this is a good outcome for me.

        • Easy fix for that is they ring you if they don't want to use a cheaper format

  • +1

thanks this deal is as good as it gets, with S7 and S8 still in place, S9 probably wouldn't go much lower. this is the price most have been waiting for.

  • so which one is the actual plan for this as it's not on the pdf. plan says $49, PDF Critical information only says $59 plan. Where does it says 25GB?

    • It's $59 less $10 credit and 10GB bonus data

  • Any idea if the $500 off is available for the 256gig models? Or is it only available for 64gig models?

    • It is $500 off 256GB model too

      • I was told $500 off the RRP of any S9 / S9+ variants.

  • Can anyone confirm if the invoice shows the full RRP price for the S9 plus or the discounted price? Trying to work out if TRS will be calculated on the full value.

    • I want to know too. :)

      • +2

I just rang JB and they said the $1199 would show on the invoice - I'll only believe it when I see it though!

    • +2

Yes, I just got this deal and it shows full RRP then -$500 as “online gift card”. You can also get the deal as $500 off off 256gig models so I paid $849 for s9 256

      • @dumadiscount
err… just a thought. is there anything restricting this to Samsung S9/S9 plus only? What if someone uses the $500 giftcard on a iPhone X instead? or any other phone of their choice… or even not getting any phone at all but keeping the $500 giftcard and BYO their old mobile (you technically still need to port in a number to Telstra)

why does the minimum cost for the plan chabges. dont we buy the phone outright? why should it matter, if the phone already belonged to us…
Total minimum cost $1287 for S9.
Total minimum cost $1437 For S9+.

        • +1

Yeah they don’t give you the giftcard. It’s a piece of paper you need to take to front desk with s9 payment instructions and they convert to $500 giftcard for immediate use against balance owing. The sales guy said it can’t be used later for anything else. Once you pay you go back to mobile section with receipt and they give you the phone.

    • Talked to jb and they said it was only the $699

    • +2

Receipt will show full RRP of device. The payment will be treated as $500 gift-card and the remaining balance cash/credit.

  • I have a current Telechoice plan with an S6 - I would like to upgrade to the S9, my husband has a crappy chinese phone, he doesnt care what phone he has but he is more interested in being able to claim the tax deductions for himself :) Help me ozbargainers to find the best way to do this deal!
So…if I go into JBHIFI and get this plan will the tax receipt for phone purchase have to be in my name, can it be in his name for tax purposes? Would the invoice be for $699 or $1199?
I was thinking of trying the great idea another poster had of getting phone then upgrading to the higher plan but fear I will end up with the google pixel being attached to my phone number when I really want the S9 - I could run the risk of my husband starting the process off so he starts off with the S9 deal and ends up with the Pixel on a $59 month plan on a 2yr contract which he can claim as a tax deduction - I end up with a S9 with no plan at all and can then sign up for another plan, but if that process doesnt work he still ends up with the S9 which he is not bothered about having!!

How can I make this work best!!

    • That's a great plan. Can you please try it yourself and let us know? Ta

    • -1

      It's $699 invoice

    • +3

I just signed up today, it's for $1199 less $500 paid by gift card

      • +1

Ive just got it and my invoice says $1199 :) and they put it in my husbands name

She said not able to do the upgrade to the pixel deal as when you buy with a gift card you have to stay in the contract for 3 months - still I will see !!!

        • +1

So they can invoice the phone in someone else's name? Interesting…

        • +1

@fredblogs: The phone contract is in my name, the handset purchase was in my husbands name and he paid for it with his credit card - happy days :) The name is put in the comments section of the JB invoice

        • +1

@baf65: The name on the invoice is only in the comments? Is that normal?

        • +2

@fredblogs: Its on the invoice thats all that matters, on a JBHIFI invoice there is no where else to put a name

  • I'm happy to give away $100 if anyone can help me get the S9 plus for this price

    • No one

      • Sorry for letting you down as I'll meet up someone tomorrow lunch time in the city

        • I hope that someone is not planning to rob you or kidnap you and lock you up in a basement to extract your man juice.

        • @Gorodemon: wel, unfortunately I'm kind of skinny can't be as juicy as you I'm afraid : )

  • The optus $69 plan works out better as its over 24 months and only $200 for extra year of 26gb
