          Foreign sellers will need to register for GST. Goods imported will likely require a declaration of GST paid and withheld. No statement (not registered for GST for example), you will pay GST on the import value and any cost of postage.

          Likely charged a processing fee as well, at the moment it varies by carrier but for $1k purchases, can be as high as $83 for processing fee alone, so expect something like $3-$5 added as a processing fee for collecting GST.

          You will need to cover costs or have the goods destroyed at this stage.

        Not the cheapest price ever, but prices on Xiaomi products have risen significantly this year.

        Especially from Gearbest who seemed to have changed their sales model.

          If what I have heard is correct, they were trying to build their member base to a certain level.
          so they were selling items at cost, or less, so other retailers were also selling really cheap.

          But they have reached the level they wanted, so prices have increased.

      Can't really comment as I've never used other extenders but as someone who uses a Mi Router it was a no trainer to get some more coverage. My brother has a stock standard ISP provided router and again super simple to setup. Only needs a usb phone charger for power and you'd be hard pressed to get a decent extender for $8. If you need it it's a good buy. Be careful though, you might get you hooked on Xiaomi products.

      I can't answer if they're better as I don't own others, but the one I have is very good and provides great speeds even placed in the room with poor signal. It exceeded my expectations in that regard. It's 2.4GHz only, but you won't get more than that in this price range.

      A bit vague on your req's but in my experience these gave me a wifi signal on a 2 storey house where before there was none (albeit crappy telstra modem).

      For $8 its worth a short to anyone who needs more signal imo.

      From memory, yes it can. When setting it up it will generally use the WiFi on the device you are are setting it up on. So if that device is connected to the hidden Wifi, the all should be well. Other option is to make the WiFi visable initially and then hide it once done.

    Got one of these a few months ago for 10 bucks; using it in the shed out back, connected to the main router's wifi which is about 15m away and through 3 walls - fast enough to browse and stream HD netflix just fine.

      Mmmm…. well no, how could it as the whole idea is that this connects to the parent WiFi and in turn acts as a repeater to give you better range. Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you are asking or the purpose of what you would need to do this for?

          Sounds like you need a small Wifi access point with a nic for the media player (that contains all the media). In turn everyone in the car can access central storage. Something like an Asus WL-330gE (old model). ….no doubt there are newer models out there.
          Check out the TP-link AC750 Wireless Travel Router. It looks simular to the Asus one.

          The above device could as a Hotspot and one could plug a USB drive into it that contains the Media that one wants to access for Kodi (a central hub). Granted it would need power. If however one wants Web access for Kodi then thats a different story.

      I bought one of these a while back and used a portable USB power bank to try the extender at the front of the house to see how far I could go.

      I was able to get a reliable connection on my phone upto ~150 meters (line of sight) so this pumps out a good deal of signal (might even exceed Australian standards).

      If you place it high enough - perhaps even in the roof (ignoring the environmental aspects for this hypothetical) then you'd probably get the whole house covered, and be able to travel 100 meters away from the home and still hopefully get a signal. Thick walls will still pose an issue on the return signal anyhows so ymmv.

    Don't waste your money.

    I got one a while ago… It took forever to arrive then only worked for 2 weeks and now it's dead (no lights/signal). Support was hopeless so I just gave up.

      This is also from Xiaomi. You use an Ethernet cable to connect one of the units to your router and it sends the internet connection over the power circuit in your house to the other unit. These also have wifi, so on the second unit you get both wired (Ethernet) and wifi internet.

      I own some and had trouble getting them to pair to one another. Once they did, they worked well, until they were damaged by lightning in a storm.
      The same lightning strike, killed by router as well.

      You can buy cheap powerline adapters locally, but they don't have wifi.

          I think it would. The access point plugs straight into an ethernet port/cable. It doesn't just re-broadcast the signal.

      Got mine today. Shipped on May 15. Got a fantastic 20dBm boost in signal strength.

      For people setting up on iphone:

      Mi Home on iOS is pretty tricky but this video helped me get set up.

      Once you get the blue led, you get the connection error screen which can be ignored. If you set the right locale, you'll see the device on the Mi Home screen. If not, you need to try others (profile > settings > Region). China mainland worked for me but india/singapore/us didn't.

      Once you see the extender in the app, you can turn on wifi-roaming which sets the extender with the same wifi name as your router so it looks like you only have 1 wifi (devices should auto connect to the wifi with the stronger signal). By default, the extender will create a wifi called '<wifi name>_plus' which means extra work every time you connect a new device.

      If your device keeps connecting to the weaker signal wifi, make sure to update the router wifi security to match the extender (WPA/WPA2)
