Awesome Askhole! Good to see a great price on these again!

    • +1

      :) No worries mate..

    • not the cheapest price ever sold on ozbargain.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/xiaomi-mi-wi-fi-repeate…

Wait for LITB or gearbest deals

      • +2

Wait for LITB or gearbest deals

Fixed. Gearbest don't offer free shipping for low value products anymore.

        • +1

didn't know they didn't offer shipping anymore.

I guess with the coming GST tax for all online stuff and no more gearbest coupons
There won't be as much deals anymore.

Do you know if all ebay purchases will charge 10% gst or just overseas ebay stores since local ebay AU sellers might have charged GST?

Also will sellers like gearbest, LITB, geekbuying charged gst when they sell to Australian customers?

        • +1

          @pinkybrain:

Foreign sellers will need to register for GST. Goods imported will likely require a declaration of GST paid and withheld. No statement (not registered for GST for example), you will pay GST on the import value and any cost of postage.

Likely charged a processing fee as well, at the moment it varies by carrier but for $1k purchases, can be as high as $83 for processing fee alone, so expect something like $3-$5 added as a processing fee for collecting GST.

You will need to cover costs or have the goods destroyed at this stage.

        • @MorriJ:
          That sucks.

If your package cost less than $10 and you get charged $3 to $5 processing fee.

          Damn you..Harvey Norman!
          Damn you.. stupid Liberal government!

      • Not the cheapest price ever, but prices on Xiaomi products have risen significantly this year.

Especially from Gearbest who seemed to have changed their sales model.

        • that sucks.
I used to buy a few stuck from gearbest, cos they post the coupon codes on ozbargain.

Was wondering why they aren't on the front page much anymore.

          What new sales model?
          "No sales" model.

        • If what I have heard is correct, they were trying to build their member base to a certain level.
so they were selling items at cost, or less, so other retailers were also selling really cheap.

But they have reached the level they wanted, so prices have increased.

        • @xev:

And what is the point of having all these members if they aren't buying anything?

Seems like a pointless exercise in collecting members unless they are trying to do something with that data
or they sell that data to other companies.

    • what speedtest result do you get when you do a test on your phone via these wifi repeaters?

Would like to see a screenshot of your speedtest

    • do these send data back a chinese overlords (ie chinese goverment?

  • +5

Are these any better at boosting WiFi speeds then the generic wifi extenders I already own?

    • I would also like to know.

    • +1

Can't really comment as I've never used other extenders but as someone who uses a Mi Router it was a no trainer to get some more coverage. My brother has a stock standard ISP provided router and again super simple to setup. Only needs a usb phone charger for power and you'd be hard pressed to get a decent extender for $8. If you need it it's a good buy. Be careful though, you might get you hooked on Xiaomi products.

      • +7

I brought this repeater a few weeks back and damn it was so simple to set up, my signal is awesome now. And YES it did get me super hooked on Xiaomi products
…I'd never heard of Xiaomi until I came onto OzBargain.

        • +3

          …and now you're addicted, lol.

      • Do you like the mi router? Will it be a good replacement for a normal one provided by an ISP?

    • I can't answer if they're better as I don't own others, but the one I have is very good and provides great speeds even placed in the room with poor signal. It exceeded my expectations in that regard. It's 2.4GHz only, but you won't get more than that in this price range.

    • A bit vague on your req's but in my experience these gave me a wifi signal on a 2 storey house where before there was none (albeit crappy telstra modem).

For $8 its worth a short to anyone who needs more signal imo.

  • it seems that this repeater has the option to stop broadcasting the SSID, but can anyone confirm if it can connect to a parent network that's not being broadcast by the router?

    • +2

From memory, yes it can. When setting it up it will generally use the WiFi on the device you are are setting it up on. So if that device is connected to the hidden Wifi, the all should be well. Other option is to make the WiFi visable initially and then hide it once done.

      • thanks for the info :)

  • +1

I got a "Coupon is not valid" error… Am I doing something wrong?

Okay, got it. I have to register first…

    • You have to log in first and then apply the coupon

    • +1

nah you have to do it through the student hub but that way you can't the 3 months off
Edit: thought this was a different post lmao, sorry

  • Got one of these a few months ago for 10 bucks; using it in the shed out back, connected to the main router's wifi which is about 15m away and through 3 walls - fast enough to browse and stream HD netflix just fine.

  • Does anyone know if you can connect to this when it can't reach the parent network?

    • Mmmm…. well no, how could it as the whole idea is that this connects to the parent WiFi and in turn acts as a repeater to give you better range. Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you are asking or the purpose of what you would need to do this for?

      • I'm wanting to find a cheap AP for in the car to connect the kids tablets and our phones so we can remote control Kodi on the tablets. This would be ideal if it could be a standalone AP.

        • Sounds like you need a small Wifi access point with a nic for the media player (that contains all the media). In turn everyone in the car can access central storage. Something like an Asus WL-330gE (old model). ….no doubt there are newer models out there.
Check out the TP-link AC750 Wireless Travel Router. It looks simular to the Asus one.

        • can't you use a personal hotspot?

In a car, would have no wifi..

not sure what you are trying to do here…

        • The above device could as a Hotspot and one could plug a USB drive into it that contains the Media that one wants to access for Kodi (a central hub). Granted it would need power. If however one wants Web access for Kodi then thats a different story.

    • The idea is, you place it in an area that still gets wifi, but close to your no wifi room. It will then repeat wifi to your no wifi room

  • Can i use this with ubiquity unify access points for seamless connection or will this have its own ssid and have to connect manually?

  • very handy to have one. good quality also

  • The coupon code "ZPSNEW051202" is not valid.

    Expired?

    • +2

Someone literally asked the same question, like it says in the description you need to register or login to apply the coupon

      • Thanks, sorry. I thought I read through the description and comments, but obviously I wasn't as alert as I thought I was at 6.30AM.

        • Afternoon shift

  • Bought one a while back. Can I plug in more than one to extend the range further? ie extender on extender?

    • Yes but that will slow the throughput of the entire network

    • I bought one of these a while back and used a portable USB power bank to try the extender at the front of the house to see how far I could go.

I was able to get a reliable connection on my phone upto ~150 meters (line of sight) so this pumps out a good deal of signal (might even exceed Australian standards).

If you place it high enough - perhaps even in the roof (ignoring the environmental aspects for this hypothetical) then you'd probably get the whole house covered, and be able to travel 100 meters away from the home and still hopefully get a signal. Thick walls will still pose an issue on the return signal anyhows so ymmv.

  • Does it work with google wifi?

  • Why Paypal is the only option for payment?

  • This doesn't support 5ghz does it?

  • +2

Does it work with non Xiaomi routers? I presume yes but…

  • +1

Does anyone know if I can use this on a hotel network with extra room credentials for login? Want it to be able to use chromecast thanks

  • Thanks OP. Code wasn't working but I had to make an account first.

Edit: shame Paypal is defaulting to their currency conversion

    • Did you see the option to use credit card conversion when you pay using Paypal?

      • +1

you get the option once you log into paypal, before you make the payment

      • Yup found it after five/ten minutes. It's not in the actual website but rather hidden in the currency options on the payment page.

    • iPhone solution? Same app on AppStore?

  • are these as simple as plugging into a usb power socket in a dead spot?

    • +6

The idea is, you place it in an area that still gets wifi, but close to your no wifi room. It will then repeat wifi to your no wifi room

      • Exactly.
Some people seem to think to place it in the middle of the distance between your Wi-Fi room and router.

  • Fantastic. I'm constantly using my laptop to extend the signal so this will be a huge help. Thanks OP.

  • How much do you think this would cost per year to power 24/7?

    • Calculate it based off its 5 volt power usage

    • Probably less than the cost of looking at this page on your computer.

  • +2

Basic Ozbargain logic applied with this purchase. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it 😉

  • Bought one and wait for It

  • -3

    Don't waste your money.

I got one a while ago… It took forever to arrive then only worked for 2 weeks and now it's dead (no lights/signal). Support was hopeless so I just gave up.

    • +4

I've bought 3, they all arrived in an average amount of time and they all work great.

      ¯|_(ツ)_/¯

  • Bought one, now the wait begins. What are people's experience with delivery times?

    • +2

From Chinese retailers, on average around 3-4 weeks, sometimes quicker, sometimes longer.

      • +2

From experience, crap you don't need comes really quickly. The one that you really need takes its' time to arrive.

  • Thanks, just what I needed! I have never had a $1-10 cheapo from China fail to arrive.

    • The website is down and their twitter looks dodgy…

  • anyone know of a low cost option for a Ethernet enabled version (ideally powered by ethernet)?

    • This is also from Xiaomi. You use an Ethernet cable to connect one of the units to your router and it sends the internet connection over the power circuit in your house to the other unit. These also have wifi, so on the second unit you get both wired (Ethernet) and wifi internet.

I own some and had trouble getting them to pair to one another. Once they did, they worked well, until they were damaged by lightning in a storm.
The same lightning strike, killed by router as well.

You can buy cheap powerline adapters locally, but they don't have wifi.

      https://www.miniinthebox.com/p/mi-wifi-signal-amplifier-300m…

    • Also looking for this. I'm using a DD-WRT router as an access point but it's been playing up. Basically need a cheap access point.

      • does access point give better speed than wifi repeater?

        • I think it would. The access point plugs straight into an ethernet port/cable. It doesn't just re-broadcast the signal.

        • @shagaroo:

would love to see someone do a speed test of access point vs xaomi repeater.

But access point is usually another wifi router etc?
Those would be a lot more expensive than this cheapo repeater.

        • @pinkybrain: If you have an network port nearby, I would definitely get an access point - see this and this.

Yes - it is more expensive. In saying that, I got my router for $10 and flashed DD-WRT onto it.

        • @shagaroo:

got a link for your router?
how did you get it for $10?

        • @pinkybrain: It was actually $11. Has been as low as $5

  • Can I use this on desktop as to replace my existing wifi adapter?

    • No. It's a WiFi repeater and not a Wifi dongle/nic. Totally different things.

  • I can't seem to get free shipping on this. What am I doing wrong? I've logged in, applied the coupon code and the price for me is $6.88US or $8.90 AU.

  • The coupon code "ZPSNEW051202" is not valid.

can't even get it for $8.90 AUD, 11.63AUD after signing in, marked as expired!

  • +2

Mine arrived today, not sure how a $6 extender can cover further than a $200 modem but my whole house is covered now.

    • Hopefully the rest of us will get it next week.

    • When did yours ship?

      • +1

        May 15th

        • we had the same shipping times…, I notice i could not get it to work on an iphone 7 but it was a very easy setup on a samsung galaxy note 4!

    • +1

Got mine today. Shipped on May 15. Got a fantastic 20dBm boost in signal strength.

For people setting up on iphone:

Mi Home on iOS is pretty tricky but this video helped me get set up.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMok2tPPLjQ&app=desktop

Once you get the blue led, you get the connection error screen which can be ignored. If you set the right locale, you'll see the device on the Mi Home screen. If not, you need to try others (profile > settings > Region). China mainland worked for me but india/singapore/us didn't.

Once you see the extender in the app, you can turn on wifi-roaming which sets the extender with the same wifi name as your router so it looks like you only have 1 wifi (devices should auto connect to the wifi with the stronger signal). By default, the extender will create a wifi called '<wifi name>_plus' which means extra work every time you connect a new device.

If your device keeps connecting to the weaker signal wifi, make sure to update the router wifi security to match the extender (WPA/WPA2)

      • Thanks for the setup tips. Finally arrived this morning.

  • Hands down the best repeater for the price. I've used all sorts of stuff 10 times the size which have been no match for this tiny powerhouse. Will order a few more.

  • still havent received mine, ordered on the 18th May. anyone else order before me that is still waiting?
