  • Has anyone had any experience with these consumer grade devices? Are they any good? Do they perform as well as the corporate devices?

love Dell, I have monitor , previously owned laptop (destroyed by kids) and recently bought Inspiron 13-7000- fantastic laptop!

Inspiron series are mostly average (with some below average build quality), the good bits are the Latitude series and XPS series.

the graphics options on these inspirons are also lackluster. MX130 on the $1.6k Inspiron for e.g, quite stingy. I'd expect a 1050 or better for that price…

I've owned 2 Inspiron laptops - they've both been excellent and performed flawlessly from day 1, and they're both still going strong. One needed a replacement keyboard but that was due to me standing on it accidentally.

A brief explainer of Dell's consumer range:
Inspiron 3000 series - entry level, cheap and disposable. Generally low specs. IMO best avoided.
Inspiron 5000 series - shiny versions of the 3000 series. Plastic frame with metal finishes, better specs, fine for basic home use.
Inspiron 7000 series - metal frame, metal finishes, high-end hardware and some advanced features available. Robust enough to take a beating. Good value and decent longevity.
XPS - Premium flagships. Expensive, but with all of the latest and greatest bits inside and luxury features. Intended as MacBook competitor.
Alienware - Gaming systems with garish RGB etc. Generally solid machines, but usually poor value due to ambitious pricing.

If you're considering daily business use, definitely go for the XPS models, or the corporate-grade Latitude models. Latitude also uses the 3000, 5000 and 7000 system, but the 3000 Latitude models are of much higher quality than the basic Inspirons.

    • hardware is great value for money.

But the screen I had in mine was TN. You'll want to make sure it's not one of those.

Aesthetics are not going to be the best.

If you want good specs for much cheaper, and are willing to sacrifice the sleek engineering of the XPS line, it represents great value.

Just bought an XPS for my daughter and Alienware for my brother. They refuse to use Inspiron as they don't have to pay for them.
Now I can't even afford an Inspiron. :(

    • Dell Outlet. If you're lucky, you can grab a Latitude 5000 / 4000 series for cheaper than a new Inspiron.

      • +1 Dell Outlet is a great way to get good hardware at a decent price. But you need to watch it carefully, and jump when see what you want….good stuff doesn't last long.

        • Are they used, or return items?

        • @fatice:

Can be a bit of both.

AS-NEW is something that could be sent to a customer but they decided they don't want it or they can't pay up, so they ship it back to Dell right away.

REFURB is something used for a very short period of time and found to be faulty. OR it was faulty to begin with and the customer rejects the faulty goods after a period of testing or usage. The unit is then sold as Refubished if it had to be repaired. There might be cosmetic scratches or marks on the laptop, but internally they are good as new.

But generally speaking Dell refurbs are never more than a month old. They will be in better nick than the laptops you find on eBay and other small-time laptop repair shops.

    • I want to be your brother.

  • I'm looking at getting my parents a new laptop. They don't need anything too fancy spec-wise but they have expressed interest in a 2-in-1 device. For them a larger screen would be advantageous. Could anyone recommend the Inspiron or another brand? Ideally looking to spend under $1000.

  • How does this compare to the Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming pc listed under the eBay deal for $1095?
