    Where is the bargain?

    • +9

Yes, only a bargain relative to the RRP. It's a pro machine with a Xeon. A rule of thumb is:

"If you don't know why you'd need a Xeon, then you don't need one."

      • -2

I’m not sure why a workstation would need a Xeon anymore. Everything graphics, maths, simulation etc seems to be done by the GPU these days.

    • +1

Can you find those specs and screen for cheaper?

      • +2

The Xeon w processors are a waste of time and money. Basically a rebadged i7/i9 at twice the cost with ecc support. ECC memory is not required for what most people use their computer for.

        • +2

..because most people are spending 7k on workstation class machines?

Regular iMacs are for most people, this is for people who need the accuracy of ECC memory and workstation grade GPU acceleration.

That said, 1 year warranty is pretty crappy for the professional market.

        • +5

          @TheContact: Agreed.

Would a >$7000 PC not qualify for something like a 3yr statutory warranty here in Australia?

I'd expect a >$7000 machine to last 5+ years minimum.

        • +1

@iDroid: I'd expect so. I believe Apple downgrade the service you get after the first year to comply with laws though. I don't actually like Apple stuff, so have no actual experience here..

So while on the whole probably better than most consumer grade stuff, I don't think you'd be getting the next day service like you would on say Dell workstations in the following years.

        • @TheContact: say say 1 year but legally they really mean 2 years.

      • +1

Ignore the negs - this is a valid question.

(If the answer is no, say so, negs are not an ideal way to answer a valid question.)

  • Thought that said $656.900 for a sec

  • +6

    This good for pacman?

    • +7

      nope, can't game on mac.
      /s

      • -1

You haven't heard of a little company called Steam….

        • +1

you missed that /s on the end?

        • +8

No, though I have heard of a company called Valve.

        • +1

@phil1311: Didn't they used to makes games or something…

        • @Hybroid:

and sequels to those games but not threequels.

  • Hopefully enough ram for ozbargain complainers 😂

  • Why would you get the top-of-the-line imac Pro 5K but get the lowest options available? TGG is offering the worst options available for every component: RAM, CPU, GPU, Storage. This build even skimps on the mouse.

    • +1

      iphone XI … $2500

      • +2

Is that the model that takes over and becomes president of China?

        No good?

Xi, it was only a joke. Don't jinping on my sense of humour.

        • Nah… The original Xi passed a law to allow him to be president for life

        • +1

@starbearer: Follow up law will include the afterlife.

    • Yeah, I've got 2 2009 27" iMacs for only $400 a piece! But yeah, they're 9 years old now.

/goes back to mumbling to self.

  • -2

I always wonder this…just imagine what you can get with desktop PCs with that amount of dough…

    • +7

Spec for spec, not much difference. The iMac Pro may actually be cheaper. It's the Xeon grade components that push the price into the stratosphere.

When it came out, someone did a spec for spec build against a Dell, and the iMac Pro was actually $100 cheaper:

      https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/maxed-imac-pro-costs…

However, bang for buck, PC prices fluctuate a lot more over time, especially in Australia. Apple keeps theirs fixed for years.

    • definitely not slim at under 10kg with 1 cable

      • Not exactly important factors for a desktop machine (even if an all-in-one).

  • -2

Imagine the beast you could build for $6.5k

    • +1

Go on then, ensuring it's workstation class, not gaming.

      • I want mine to be fb-ig class.

        Oh wait. OzB class… too…

        • Check out the OLPC then.

  • You know some rich guy gonna buy this for their kids schoolwork.

    • +2

I'm available for adoption in the right circumstances. Just not in a Woody Allen kind of way.

  • Expensive. But OMG, it's gorgeous!

    • I want one! But my wallet tells me I don’t need one.

  • Some Edu apple store discounts can get this down to $6440.50 or less, not sure if bargain…

  • +2

While the price may seem high to all the PC gamer crowd this is actually a very nice package for someone who needs a multi-core WORKSTATION..!

Please show me an alternative 8 core PC with a 16:10 5K resolution monitor. I guarantee you it will be a lot more than this..!

However, if you don't need 8 cores+ then the standard imac would probably suit you better. And if you can wait a little while the new imacs may even get the 6 core upgrade..

    • That's likely true because of the weird resolution.
I feel like it's possible to do a DIY build and a get yuge OLED monitor for less than $6k.

It's still a fair price for anyone wanting to go into that ecosystem.

      • $6000 will probably get you a UP3017Q with some pocket change left over unfortunately
