    6” Facial Unlock

    😂

  • How is it compare to mi a1?

    • +6

Better off with the Mi A1, more RAM, better CPU that's more efficient and more storage. Runs near stock Android and has a strong community on XDA if you're into that.

      • +1

lack of australian support / warranty can be trickey for many users, some people just buy a phone, put in a sim and use it and if something goes wrong they go back to a shop and ask questions or get repairs.

my son has the A1 …was good until we had to a get screen for it as it cracked ….. hole in the wall phone repair places didn’t have one so we had to order it ourselves and supply to be fitted ….. would have been an expensive saga for the non tech savvy or a bin job.

also this has band 28 the xiaomi doesn’t ……

android one is why we got one , but it seems it’s not on the android p roadmap …so next phone we will make sure it’s on android p roadmap.

        • +14

My 14 yo cracked his A1 screen too. It was $80 for the shop to fit the screen he had to supply. ~$28

I didn't see the point for the $80 when you can get a new A1 for apprx $200, but we ordered the screen anyway and I told him to fit it himself - if he failed we'll get a new A1. Treat it as a learning exercise

With YouTube and about an hour, he managed to fit it himself

          @utopia:

I agree, if it breaks even then chuck it and get a new one cos its such a low price for an imported Xiaomi handset.

I'd rather do that then pay for a local Oppo with a laggy handset that tears when scrolling through tabs or anything in the UI.

People cry about not having band 28 or local warranty, yet go and pay shitloads for Foxtel or Telstra. And they can't afford a cheap Xiaomi phone again?

        • @utopia: Where did you get the replacement screen/glass? I have a perfectly good RN4 sitting in my drawer because I dropped it and the screen cracked. I just bought a replacement one (and case this time…)

No local places could fix it at the time because the phones aren't sold here and they don't have the part, If I thought I could fix the other one for about $100 it would make a good phone for my son.

        • @Brianqpr:
I tried to give you a link but its not allowed. They seem to be about $15 on aliexpress

    • A lot less bezel on the oppo, if that matters to you. Both phones are around the same physical size but the oppo has a 6" screen compared to a 5.5" on the Mi.

Pretty sure facial unlock is 100% software. It's never worked very well in any device that I've used it on other than Surface Pro which isn't used like a phone.

Also once you've reached $216 for the unlock you are paying the price of the Sharp Aquos S2 which has 4GB, IGZO panel, dual camera, NFC.

    • +1

Mind sharing the link for the Aquos S2 all i see is $400-500

      • +2

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/371394

They're not EXACTLY comparable, as the s2 needs to be rooted and flashed yourself, and it's an overseas seller. Hardware wise the s2 is much better.

I'm not a massive fan of these semi-generic China phones; partly due to the quality and partly due to the trustworthiness of the oem and company.

I'd be getting a phone that i could flash with lineage OS or something with android one.

        • +3

as soon as it’s overseas order and root and flash you have eliminated the average phone buyer,

think the idea of this one is you buy it and if on optus you are ready to go, and if it breaks you take it back to woolies. if you don’t know how to use some of the features or get your stuff across walk into an optus shop or call their support or use their chat , etc and you get some help….either australian accent in shop or phillipino on their 1300 number

if you are on telstra unlock and use on telstra and it even has band 28.

        • Yes, I've got one too. It's fun. Flashing the firmware was a little frustrating, but added to the fun for me once I got it.

        • @garage sale: the info on the Joybuy website is incorrect. The Aquos S2 does not require root. You do have to flash a different firmware to get Google Play Store though.

It's pretty straightforward, here are the instructions
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/5908744/redir

      • Bought two from Joybuy. Using it to reply right now. Great phone for 210$. Camera is better than most average phone at the same price. eBay seller are asking for about 300-400$ for it and andymobile.com.au is asking for 650$ it. 210$ from Joybuy is bloody cheap..

        • Also got the Sharp Phone absolutely brilliant, $215 atm. Search Joybuy sharp aquos s2.

You do have to flash a different firmware, a little stressful but really not that hard.

    • Yeah this just uses a normal camera and matches pixels. Highly insecure and fairly slow/inaccurate. I would just be using the tried and true fingerprint scanner.

    • I have a OnePlus 5T and the facial unlock often works in half a second

      • had it on my moto…worked fine…you need a great front camera for it to work so has to be designed not an afterthought.

        • This phone's camera is fantastic!

  • Can not use on Telstra network

  • Don't forget 5% off Wish egift card for $9.95 off.

  • Isn't Oppo the one where you're locked to their interface, as well?

Not a dig, but asking. I'm looking for something for my daughter and I recall not buying Oppo for something to do with their system…

    • They tend to also make any system modifications hard, such as rooting or installing a custom rom. Their sister company OnePlus is the complete opposite. (Oneplus and Oppo are both run by BBK Electronics, one of the top two smartphone manufacturers in the world).

    • Can't change most of the default apps. ie. you want to use a different sms app, not allowed. Change the launcher to, let's say Nova Launcher, not allowed.

    • Yes you can change default apps. My girlfriend has one of these and I set up Nova launcher for her no problem…

      • Well your girlfriend must have a magic phone or something. Because everyone else using an oppo phone can't change the default launcher or default apps like messages etc etc.

        • Settings > App Management > Default App Management(at the very bottom) then go nuts :)

        • @Forskin:

          It's true.

Using Google Now Launcher results in a loss of encryption of individual apps, though.

        • @Forskin: From what I understood, it quickly switches back to the default launcher. Like a demo in a store. But if that’s not the case anymore, that’s good to hear.

    • Oppo sucks at their promises and fanbase is constantly complaining on their forums. While in Xiaomi forums any negative comments are removed by default so you can't see exact frustration people have.

  • Would this work with Amaysim ?

    • +1

      Yes, 100%

      • Thank you

  • Is this phone ok with Kogan/Vodaphone network?

    • Sure is

  • Is this better than xiaomi phone?

    • depends if you are happy to import yourself and support it yourself and send back if it has issues or you want local shopfront for support and english speaking 1300 for support.

      • Never had I have to send any phone back for repair before. What do you do with your phone for you to send it back? Do you throw it around all the time? What kind of support do you need that you have to call a company for support?

        • +1

I used to think that too, but I was wrong. You've clearly never owned an LG phone of a certain vintage - LG G4, nexus 5x, LG G5 all had significant hardware issues, mostly related to overheating causing the CPU to fail. LG Australia refused to help anyone with overseas stock, even though it was clearly an LG warranty issue. No throwing or dropping or water or anything else was required, you just had to use the phone for 6 months and occasionally have CPU load. The only solution was to send it back overseas and get it replaced in the country of purchase. What I learned from this is that a) local stock is always preferable [2 years ACL warranty, manufacturer must provide warranty, and extra warranty through some credit cards] b) the seller matters [I bought from qd_au on ebay and they were awesome], and c) I'm never buying an LG phone again.

  • +2

Worth it at this price imo. ColorOS is garbage but you can't get anything local with these specs/features for $200.

    • yep, perfect phone for people that just want walk into woollies, buy a phone , pop in an optus sim and get going

and comes with an AU charger …..

it’s 2160pixels so must have some extra info along the the to top 200 pixels …..

    • The thing I liked from ColorOS (2) were the gestures. Sure, double tap to wake is native to android, but sliding two fingers to adjust volume was my favourite. As well as double tap home button to lock screen.

The physical hardware buttons felt weak(thanks Oppo), so I lived on the software controls.

They ruined it with ColorOS 3, with the toggles sliding from the bottom like Control Centre on iOS.

  • Is this the one PRC listens in on?

    • +4

the PRC doesn’t listen in to our worthless rantimgs ….. hearing what people, talk about on the train even our own gov wouldn’t be interested to listen in …… i think even the people they are calling don’t really want to,listen but are being polite.

      • +1

Exactly, why would they want to waste their time listening in on our small talk?
What they want is to make $$$ when you purchase this device which undercuts the competition.

        • +1

They just collect a tonne of personal information instead.

  • Single sim only?

  • +2

I have owned this phone for 2 months now (outright on Kogan) and am very happy with its performance. Handles everything I've thrown at it. Camera is also surprisingly good. Fingerprint works fast everytime. Just bought another one for wife. At time of purchase I was also looking at the xiomi
but no band 28 and no local supplier was a deal breaker. $200 is an excellent price for the oppo - can't imagine any local phone at this price that can rival it. Can probably get it unlocked but not sure if this affects warranty?

  • Would this work with a Virgin mobile sim without having to unlock?

    • -1

Pretty sure it won't. It's locked to optus.

  • -1

Do they have colours other than pink?

    • +1

      Yes, Black

  • -3

    iPhone wannabe

  • Kogan Phone ≠ Big W Phone

  • anyone know what the battery life is like on these?

    • Great.

  • Oppo + Optus, keep in mind this combination is a bit trouble to use Telstra network even you unlock the network. You have to type in code and activate Telstra banks after every restart. Google it if it matters.

    • care to explain? dont really follow.

  • Does this have an SD slot?

  • -3

No NFC is a real shame at this price point.

  • +1

Mediatek processor… no thanks. Had issue's with those in the past.

    Much prefer SnapDragon.

So far, based on issue's like performance, incorrect (lying) battery capacity, bloatware it's impossible to remove, I'd stay away from:
    Elephone, Umi, LG.

Ulefone and Xioami (snapdragon, not MTK) phones are great. Redmi series especially.

  • Does it work with Telstra if unlocked via eBay seller?

  • it's coming up as $259 on BigW website.

  • +1

This is now $189.05 delivered @ Target eBay with PULL5.
